How to Increase the Maximum Upload Size in ownCloud

Raise ownCloud's upload ceiling safely by changing the active PHP-FPM limits, aligning web-server request settings, checking storage and timeouts, and verifying the complete web-serving path.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To raise ownCloud’s upload ceiling, increase upload_max_filesize and post_max_size in the PHP-FPM configuration that serves the web request, then make sure Nginx or Apache, temporary storage, destination storage, quotas and timeouts allow the same transfer. The effective limit is the smallest limit anywhere between the client and the ownCloud data directory. A value such as 16G is an example from ownCloud documentation, not a universal maximum.

How ownCloud decides whether an upload is allowed

An upload does not have one switch. The request passes through several layers, and any layer can reject it before ownCloud receives the complete file. The practical ceiling is the lowest applicable value.

Layer Setting or condition What happens when it is lower than the file
Browser or desktop client Client behavior, connection stability and protocol support The transfer may stop before the server receives a complete request.
Front-end web server Nginx client_max_body_size, or Apache LimitRequestBody and request-timeout rules The server can return a 413-style request-too-large response or close a slow request.
PHP-FPM upload_max_filesize and post_max_size PHP rejects the multipart request or reports that the file exceeds the permitted size.
ownCloud Server policy, user or group quota, and chunk-upload configuration ownCloud can refuse the file even when PHP accepts it.
Storage Free space in the temporary upload filesystem and the final data volume The upload fails during buffering, assembly or final storage.
Time budget PHP input and execution limits plus web-server request timeouts A slow but otherwise valid upload is terminated before completion.

Changing only the PHP value therefore fixes only one possible bottleneck. For example, a 16 GB PHP limit does not help if Nginx still allows 1 GB, the temporary filesystem has 4 GB free, or the user’s ownCloud quota has already been reached.

Choose a target and identify the PHP configuration that actually serves ownCloud

Set a policy before editing files

Pick a maximum based on the largest files users genuinely need, the available disk space and the time your connection can remain open. The documented 16G example is suitable only when your storage, backup and operational policies support it. A larger ceiling also permits larger individual requests, so it should not be set merely because a directive accepts a large number.

Do not confuse CLI PHP with web-serving PHP

Running php --ini or php -i checks the command-line PHP installation. ownCloud’s browser request normally runs through PHP-FPM, which can use a different PHP version, a different php.ini, and a different pool configuration. Confirm the PHP-FPM version and pool connected to the ownCloud virtual host before changing anything.

Use your distribution’s service and pool configuration to identify the active FPM process. A temporary, access-controlled PHP information page can show the web context’s loaded configuration and effective values; remove that page immediately after checking it, because a public PHP information page discloses server details. An equivalent check through an existing administrator-only diagnostic facility is preferable where available.

Record the current values

Write down the effective values of upload_max_filesize, post_max_size, max_input_time, max_execution_time and upload_tmp_dir. Also note the Nginx or Apache virtual-host configuration and the free space on both the temporary and ownCloud data filesystems. This baseline makes it clear which change solved a failure and provides a rollback reference.

Raise PHP-FPM’s upload and request limits

Set both size directives

Edit the active PHP-FPM configuration, or place the settings in ownCloud’s .user.ini when that method is enabled and readable by the FPM pool. Use values appropriate to your policy. For a 16 GB example:

upload_max_filesize = 16G
post_max_size = 16G

post_max_size must not be lower than upload_max_filesize, because a browser upload is a complete HTTP POST that includes multipart overhead in addition to the file itself. Setting the two to the same documented example is acceptable for many installations; setting post_max_size slightly higher gives the request a little room for that overhead.

PHP’s shorthand units are part of the setting syntax. Keep the unit attached to the number and use one convention consistently when comparing PHP, Nginx and Apache limits. Do not assume that a value shown by a shell command is the value used by FPM until you verify it through the web-serving context.

Understand where .user.ini fits

ownCloud can use owncloud/.user.ini for per-directory PHP settings when the server’s PHP configuration permits user INI files. This is different from Apache’s .htaccess: PHP-FPM does not read upload-size settings from .htaccess. If a value in .user.ini appears to have no effect, check that the file is in the directory tree used by the web request, that the FPM pool can read it, and that the pool has not disabled user-level overrides. The system-wide or pool configuration is the dependable place when user INI files are unavailable.

Allow enough time for large or slow transfers

Size limits alone do not keep a large upload alive. Increase max_input_time when PHP needs more time to receive request data and review max_execution_time when ownCloud needs more time to process it. Choose values from the slowest connection and the largest permitted file rather than copying an arbitrary very large number. A long timeout consumes a PHP worker for longer, so account for concurrent users.

Raise the front-end web-server limit

Nginx

In the server or applicable location block for ownCloud, set client_max_body_size to a value that is not lower than the PHP policy. A 16 GB example is:

client_max_body_size 16G;

Nginx uses the most specific configuration that applies to the request. Check included files as well as the main virtual-host file; an inherited or location-specific value can silently override the value you edited. Validate the configuration before reloading it, then reload Nginx so new requests use the change. If Nginx logs a request-too-large response, PHP-FPM has not yet had an opportunity to accept the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apache

Review LimitRequestBody in the virtual host, directory or location that serves ownCloud. Apache expresses this directive in bytes. For reference, 16 GiB is 17,179,869,184 bytes, so an equivalent example is:

LimitRequestBody 17179869184

Use the byte value that matches your chosen policy, not this example by default. Apache configuration inheritance matters: a directory or proxy rule can impose a smaller limit than the virtual host. The mod_reqtimeout module can also terminate a slow request even when its body size is permitted. Review its header and body timeout behavior if large uploads fail only on slow connections.

Keep the limits aligned

The web-server limit should be at least as high as the PHP limit, and the PHP limits should be at least as high as the largest file policy. If the server limit is intentionally lower, that lower value is the real ceiling. Aligning the values makes error diagnosis easier, but it does not override ownCloud quotas or available storage.

Provide temporary space, destination space and permission

Check the temporary upload filesystem

PHP may buffer an incoming upload under upload_tmp_dir before ownCloud moves or processes it. Confirm that the directory exists, is writable by the PHP-FPM user and has enough free space for the largest permitted upload and other simultaneous transfers. A server with a 16 GB limit can still fail immediately if the temporary filesystem has less space available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for concurrency rather than one file: several users can upload at the same time, and failed or interrupted requests can leave temporary data until cleanup runs. Monitor both capacity and inode availability, and ensure that filesystem quotas or container volume limits are not smaller than the host’s apparent free space.

Check the ownCloud data volume and quota

The final data filesystem needs room for the completed file, any temporary copy made during processing and normal ownCloud metadata. The user’s ownCloud quota, group quota or an administrator policy can be lower than the PHP and web-server limits. A successful HTTP request therefore does not guarantee that the file can be committed to the account. Check the destination volume and the affected account’s remaining quota before raising a limit further.

Check ownership and mandatory access controls

After changing a temporary directory or chunk directory, verify ownership and permissions for the PHP-FPM worker. On systems with mandatory access controls, the security policy must also allow the FPM process to write there. A permission failure usually appears in PHP-FPM, web-server or ownCloud logs rather than as a clear size error.

Use chunked uploads when request size or connection reliability is the problem

ownCloud clients can split a large file into smaller requests. Chunking can avoid a single long request and makes interrupted transfers easier to resume, but it does not remove the need for storage, quota and policy checks. The complete file still has to fit in the destination, and the server must be able to assemble or process the chunks.

Configure the chunk directory

ownCloud documents OWNCLOUD_DAV_CHUNK_BASE_DIR for the location used to store WebDAV upload chunks. Place that directory on a filesystem with sufficient capacity and ensure that the account running the web application can create, read, rename and delete chunk files. Keep temporary chunks on a volume with a cleanup policy so abandoned transfers do not consume all available space.

Understand OWNCLOUD_MAX_UPLOAD

ownCloud’s environment-variable reference documents OWNCLOUD_MAX_UPLOAD, which maps to the PHP upload-size settings. In a containerized deployment, set this variable through the container or orchestration configuration and recreate or restart the container according to that platform’s process. Do not rely on an edit made inside a running container if the image will be replaced; the setting must live in the deployment definition.

Environment-variable configuration and direct PHP-FPM editing are alternatives, not two independent limits. Use the method appropriate to your installation, then verify the resulting values through the web-serving PHP context. A container variable cannot raise an Nginx, Apache, quota or filesystem limit outside the container.

Restart services and verify the complete path

Apply the changes safely

After editing PHP-FPM settings, restart the PHP-FPM service so workers load the new configuration. Service names vary by distribution and installed PHP version; common examples include php-fpm and a versioned unit such as php8.2-fpm. Reload or restart the HTTP server after changing its request limit. For example, systems commonly use sudo systemctl reload nginx or sudo systemctl reload apache2; use the unit name present on your host.

Validate configuration syntax before a reload or restart. A syntax error can leave the old configuration running or prevent the service from starting. Schedule disruptive restarts appropriately on a busy instance and confirm that the service is active afterward.

Verify from the web context

  1. Open the protected diagnostic view or other administrator-only mechanism that reports PHP values for the ownCloud web request.
  2. Confirm that upload_max_filesize and post_max_size show the intended values, with post_max_size no lower than the upload limit.
  3. Confirm the active upload_tmp_dir and check free space and write permission on that filesystem.
  4. Inspect the active Nginx or Apache configuration and confirm its request-body limit is not lower.
  5. Check the ownCloud data volume, account quota and chunk directory before testing.
  6. Upload a file just above the former limit, not an irreplaceable production file, and watch the ownCloud, PHP-FPM and web-server logs while it runs.

Delete any temporary PHP diagnostic page after verification. The successful test should be large enough to cross the old boundary but small enough to leave recovery room if a setting is still wrong.

Diagnose a failed large upload by its symptom

Observed symptom Most likely layer Next check
Immediate request-too-large response, often before ownCloud displays an upload state Nginx or Apache Check client_max_body_size, LimitRequestBody and included virtual-host configuration.
PHP reports that the uploaded file exceeds the permitted size PHP-FPM Verify both size directives through the web context; confirm you edited the FPM configuration rather than CLI PHP.
Small files work, but slow large files time out PHP or web-server timeout Review max_input_time, max_execution_time and Apache request-timeout behavior, then check proxy or load-balancer timeouts if one is present.
Upload reaches a high percentage and then fails with a storage message Temporary or destination storage, quota or permissions Check free space, inode counts, account quota, directory ownership and security-policy denials.
Chunked transfer repeatedly retries or leaves partial files Chunk directory or client/server consistency Verify OWNCLOUD_DAV_CHUNK_BASE_DIR, write permissions, available space and cleanup behavior; inspect logs for failed chunk moves.
CLI PHP shows a large value but browser uploads remain capped Different PHP runtimes Inspect the PHP-FPM pool and web-serving configuration instead of the command-line installation.
Changing .htaccess has no effect Configuration method PHP-FPM does not read these settings from .htaccess; use the active FPM configuration or owncloud/.user.ini where supported.

When the message is ambiguous, correlate timestamps across the ownCloud, PHP-FPM and web-server logs. The first layer to record a rejection usually identifies the bottleneck. A request that never appears in the PHP-FPM log was likely stopped by the front-end server; a PHP error with no corresponding web-server size rejection points to the FPM settings.

Direct browser uploads versus chunked client uploads

Approach Strength Limitations and requirements
Single direct request Simple path with no chunk assembly directory and fewer individual requests. One connection must remain viable for the whole transfer; every front-end, PHP and timeout limit applies to that request.
Chunked client upload Smaller requests can resume more gracefully after interruptions and reduce the duration of each request. Chunks still consume temporary storage, need permissions and cleanup, and the completed file remains subject to quota, destination space and ownCloud policy.

Use chunking when connection reliability or long single-request time is the problem. Do not use it as a way to evade a deliberate file-size policy or a full data volume. Both approaches require a correctly configured PHP-FPM and web-server path unless the client and server use a protocol-specific route with its own documented limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Containerized and traditional installations: which setting to edit

In a traditional installation, the durable change is in the PHP-FPM configuration serving the ownCloud virtual host, with owncloud/.user.ini as an alternative where enabled. In a containerized installation, the image or entrypoint may generate PHP settings from environment variables. ownCloud documents OWNCLOUD_MAX_UPLOAD for that purpose, while OWNCLOUD_DAV_CHUNK_BASE_DIR controls the chunk location.

Do not mix methods without checking the resulting configuration. An environment variable can be overwritten by an image update, and a hand-edited file inside a container can disappear when the container is recreated. Store the selected values in the deployment configuration, restart or recreate the service, and then verify the effective web values. The same lower-limit rule still applies to the reverse proxy, web server, volume sizes, quotas and timeouts surrounding the container.

Operational and security considerations

  • Capacity: Reserve space for concurrent temporary uploads, completed files, metadata, backups and chunk remnants. A nominal maximum is not a promise that the server can accept that many files simultaneously.
  • Worker usage: Long input and execution timeouts keep PHP-FPM workers occupied. Size the pool and monitor latency before allowing very large uploads for many users.
  • Abuse resistance: A high request limit increases the impact of unauthenticated or authenticated request abuse. Keep authentication, rate controls and web-server protections appropriate to the installation.
  • Policy consistency: Document the relationship among the global limit, user quotas, group quotas and any reverse-proxy limit so administrators do not troubleshoot a policy rejection as a PHP error.
  • Backups and recovery: Confirm that backup windows, replication and restore procedures can handle the largest permitted files. Raising the upload setting without adjusting those processes creates an operational bottleneck rather than more useful capacity.

End-to-end checklist

  1. Choose a maximum supported file size based on policy, free space and expected concurrency.
  2. Identify the PHP-FPM version and pool serving the ownCloud web request; do not rely on CLI PHP output.
  3. Set upload_max_filesize and post_max_size in that FPM configuration or a supported owncloud/.user.ini, keeping the POST limit at least as high.
  4. Set practical max_input_time and max_execution_time values for the slowest permitted transfer.
  5. Raise Nginx client_max_body_size or Apache LimitRequestBody so the web server is not the lower limit; review Apache request timeouts.
  6. Check temporary-directory capacity, destination free space, quotas, permissions and security controls.
  7. If using chunks, configure OWNCLOUD_DAV_CHUNK_BASE_DIR on suitable storage and understand that chunking does not bypass policy or capacity limits.
  8. If using a container, persist OWNCLOUD_MAX_UPLOAD and other environment settings in the deployment definition rather than editing an ephemeral container.
  9. Validate configuration, restart PHP-FPM and reload or restart the HTTP server.
  10. Verify the values through the web-serving PHP context and test with a file just above the old limit while monitoring all relevant logs.

The practical rule

ownCloud can accept a larger file only when every layer agrees: PHP-FPM must permit it, Nginx or Apache must pass it, temporary and destination filesystems must hold it, ownCloud policy and quota must allow it, and the connection must finish within the configured time. Raise the central PHP settings first, align the front end, provide storage and timeout headroom, then verify with a controlled test through the actual web path.
