A small self-hosted Ghost blog usually costs $6–$12 per month for the VPS in 2026. Ghost’s own hosting comparison uses $10 per month as an indicative self-hosting starting point. That is only the server: you must also pay for a domain and may need recurring services for newsletter email, backups, analytics, CDN/WAF protection, and image editing.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
The software license is free because Ghost is open source. Self-hosting is not free, however, because you pay for infrastructure and take responsibility for installation, updates, SSL, security, monitoring, backups, and recovery.

What you actually pay for
A self-hosted Ghost budget has two parts: the infrastructure that keeps the site online and the work or services needed to operate it safely. The monthly server bill is easy to see; the operational obligations are what often make the total higher than expected.
Ghost software
Ghost itself is open source and does not charge a software license fee. You download and run the application on infrastructure you control. There is no Ghost license line item in a self-hosting invoice.

Virtual private server
A VPS is the main recurring cost. Current DigitalOcean Basic Droplet examples are $6 per month for 1 GiB of RAM and $12 per month for 2 GiB. Ghost’s official comparison lists self-hosting from $10 per month, which is a useful planning baseline rather than a guaranteed provider price.
Ghost recommends at least 1 GB of RAM. DigitalOcean’s Ghost image is built and tested on a 2 GiB Droplet, so the $12 option gives more provisioning headroom for the operating system, database, web server, and traffic bursts. A 1 GiB server can be a reasonable low-traffic starting point, but it leaves less room for upgrades and maintenance tasks.
Domain registration and DNS
You need a registered domain and a DNS record to complete a normal public deployment. The amount is not a universal monthly price: it varies by registrar and by top-level domain, and registration is commonly billed annually. Keep it as a separate annual budget line rather than assuming it is included in the VPS price.
Indicative add-on costs in 2026
Ghost Foundation’s 2026 hosting comparison gives category-level starting figures for common self-hosting add-ons. They are not a single mandatory bundle, and actual provider pricing depends on usage, retention, region, and features.

How much RAM should a Ghost blog have?
The practical decision is between a very lean 1 GiB server and a 2 GiB server with more operating margin.

At $6 per month in the cited DigitalOcean example, 1 GiB minimizes cash cost for a small personal blog with modest traffic and few integrations. It is closer to Ghost’s stated minimum than to a comfortable reserve. Memory pressure can appear during package updates, backups, image processing, or traffic spikes, so monitor usage and have an upgrade path ready.
2 GiB VPS: more headroom
At $12 per month in the same example, 2 GiB aligns with the Ghost image’s documented test environment. The extra memory helps when the database, reverse proxy, operating system, and Ghost process are active together. It is usually the safer default when you expect regular publishing, a growing audience, or additional utilities on the same machine.

RAM is not a permanent capacity guarantee. If traffic or workloads grow, plan to resize the VPS, move services apart, or introduce a CDN rather than treating the original server size as fixed.
Three realistic 2026 budgets
The following scenarios separate the compute bill from services that are optional or audience-dependent. The domain is excluded from the monthly sums because its annual price varies.
Lean personal blog
Use a 1 GiB VPS at $6 per month, or choose the 2 GiB example at $12 for more headroom. Add a domain and, if the content matters, a backup service. This pattern assumes no paid newsletter delivery, analytics subscription, CDN/WAF, or image-editing service. It is the lowest-cost practical setup for a low-traffic site whose owner is willing to handle administration.
Newsletter publication
Start with the VPS and domain, then add email delivery when subscribers need newsletters. Ghost’s indicative email figure is $15 per month. At that level, the email service can cost more than the server even for a small publication. This is normal: sending, handling bounces, and maintaining deliverability are separate infrastructure problems from serving web pages.

Higher-reliability publication
A more resilient setup adds backups, analytics, and CDN/WAF protection as the audience and risk profile grow. Using Ghost’s indicative figures, those three categories contribute $5, $10, and $20 per month respectively, before the VPS, domain, and any newsletter delivery. A 2 GiB VPS is a sensible starting point for this type of stack, but the correct size still depends on traffic and workload.
| Scenario | Known monthly components | Excluded or variable items |
|---|---|---|
| Lean personal blog | $6 VPS example, or $12 for 2 GiB | Domain, optional backups, owner’s time |
| Newsletter publication | VPS plus $15/month indicative email delivery | Domain, audience-driven email usage, backups, owner’s time |
| Higher-reliability publication | VPS plus $5 backups, $10 analytics, and $20 CDN/WAF indicative figures | Domain, email delivery, scaling, owner’s time |
What self-hosting makes you responsible for
A managed platform bundles operational work; a self-hosted server assigns it to you. Budget time even when the cash bill looks small.
- Installation: provision the VPS, configure the operating system, install Ghost and its dependencies, and connect the domain.
- SSL and renewal: configure HTTPS and ensure certificates continue renewing before they expire.
- Updates: apply Ghost, operating-system, database, and web-server updates, checking compatibility and rollback options.
- Security: restrict administrative access, use strong credentials, monitor logs, and respond to vulnerabilities or abuse.
- Backups: create backups, store them separately from the server, and test that a restore actually works.
- Monitoring: watch disk space, memory, CPU, uptime, error rates, and email delivery health.
- Recovery: rebuild or restore the site after hardware failure, accidental deletion, corruption, or a bad update.
If you do this work yourself, the cash cost can remain low but the time cost is real. If you hire help, labor can exceed the VPS and service subscriptions, especially when an incident occurs outside normal working hours.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Self-hosted Ghost versus Ghost(Pro)
The meaningful comparison is total ownership cost, not just the server line. Ghost(Pro) is managed hosting; self-hosting is an infrastructure-and-operations project.
Best Value
| Comparison point | Self-hosted Ghost | Ghost(Pro) |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cash cost | VPS plus domain and any separate services | Managed plan price; exact amount depends on the selected plan |
| Updates and maintenance | Owner installs and verifies updates | Managed by the hosting service |
| Backups, CDN, and SSL | Separate providers or owner administration | Included as managed services according to Ghost’s comparison |
| Control | Direct SSH and database access; core changes are possible | Less infrastructure control in exchange for less maintenance |
| Scaling work | Owner resizes resources and adds services | Handled within the managed platform’s plan and limits |
| Operational burden | Installation, security, monitoring, and recovery remain yours | Much of that work is bundled |
Ghost’s documentation summarizes the trade-off this way: “For heavy users of Ghost, self-hosting generally works out to be more expensive vs Ghost(Pro), but for lightweight blogs it can be cheaper.” The reason is cumulative: once a publication needs email delivery, backups, analytics, CDN/WAF protection, and reliable administration, the separate service and labor costs can overtake a managed plan.
Recommended Free Tools
A practical way to calculate your own total
- Choose the server size. Start with $6 for the cited 1 GiB example or $12 for 2 GiB; use $10 as Ghost’s comparison baseline when making a neutral estimate.
- Add the domain’s annual renewal. Record the real registrar and top-level-domain price separately because no universal figure applies.
- Decide whether you send newsletters. If yes, include an email-delivery budget; Ghost’s indicative self-hosting figure starts at $15 per month.
- Set a recovery target. If losing recent posts or member data would hurt, budget backups from the outset; Ghost lists full-site backups from $5 per month.
- Choose measurement and delivery layers. Add analytics from $10 per month and CDN/WAF from $20 per month only when their capabilities justify the cost.
- Price your time. Estimate hours for setup, monthly updates, monitoring, and incident response. Compare that value with the price of managed hosting.
- Recalculate at growth points. Revisit memory, storage, email volume, and protection when traffic, publishing frequency, or subscriber count changes.
Common budgeting mistakes
Calling the VPS the total cost
The $6–$12 server range is a starting point, not a complete invoice. Omitting the domain, email, recovery, and labor makes self-hosting look artificially cheap.
Choosing the smallest server without a recovery plan
A 1 GiB machine may run a small site, but updates and maintenance consume memory too. Keep backups off the VPS and know how to resize or restore before the site becomes important.
Assuming every add-on is mandatory
Newsletter delivery, analytics, CDN/WAF, and image editing are separate needs. A private blog may not require all four; a publication with subscribers and meaningful traffic may require several.
Ignoring deliverability and restore testing
Paying for email or backups is not the same as proving they work. Confirm that newsletters reach recipients and periodically perform a restore test using a safe copy or staging environment.
Comparing only advertised prices
Compare included services and your own time. A lower VPS bill can be outweighed by administration, emergency recovery, or separate subscriptions that a managed plan includes.
Bottom line for 2026
For a small self-hosted Ghost blog, reserve $6–$12 per month for the VPS, with $10 as Ghost’s indicative self-hosting baseline, then add a domain and only the services your publication genuinely needs. Newsletter email starts at Ghost’s indicative $15 per month, backups at $5, analytics at $10, CDN/WAF at $20, and image editing at $12. The software remains free, but infrastructure and responsible operation are not. Self-hosting is most compelling when you value control and can supply the maintenance time; managed hosting can be cheaper overall when you would otherwise assemble and operate several paid services yourself.
