Record the exact search query and the screenshot’s capture date and time, including the timezone, in a caption, filename, or companion note—not by editing the search page. For useful comparisons, also record the search engine, device, country or location, and query language.
What to record with each SERP screenshot
Give every screenshot a record that identifies what was searched and when the image was captured. A compact record can sit immediately outside the image as a caption, in the filename, or in a separate evidence note linked to the original file.

- Search engine: for example, Google Search.
- Exact query: preserve the words, punctuation, and meaningful operators as entered.
- Capture date and time: include the timezone so the timestamp is interpretable across locations and around midnight.
- Device: record the device class, such as desktop or mobile.
- Country or location: record the actual setting used.
- Query language: record the language used for the search.
Example format: “Search engine: Google Search; Query: ‘how to include the search query and date in SERP screenshots’; Captured: 2026-10-03 22:55 UTC; Device: desktop; Country/location: [actual setting]; Query language: English.” This illustrates a record format, not a claim that a screenshot was taken.

The capture timestamp describes when you made the screenshot. A date shown beside a search result may instead be Google’s estimate of when that page was published or significantly updated. Label it as the result’s displayed or byline date if it matters; do not mistake it for the time the screenshot was captured or infer a publication date when none is shown. Google’s byline-date guidance distinguishes the page date from other dates and recommends making a page date prominent and using consistent structured dates where applicable.

A practical workflow for labeling SERP captures
- Run the query in the intended search engine and context. Record the exact query, including meaningful punctuation or operators.
- Capture the results page without changing what is visible. Google says Search should be shown naturally; do not alter its interface or manufacture, remove, or change autocomplete terms or results. Google’s Search guidelines explain this requirement.
- Save the original screenshot. Put identifying information in a caption, filename, or companion evidence note rather than editing the search interface.
- Write down the capture date, time, and timezone. A date without a time can be ambiguous for work across timezones or near midnight.
- If the image supports a report or comparison, keep the original file and link the written observation to it. A screenshot records what appeared in that particular context; by itself, it does not show why the results appeared that way or establish a broader ranking trend.
Filename example
A useful pattern is engine_device_query_YYYY-MM-DD_HH-MM_TZ.png. Replace characters your file system does not accept, but preserve the exact query in the companion note if sanitizing the filename changes it.

Make comparisons interpretable
Google Search’s visual elements can change over time and may vary by device, country, and query language, so record those conditions for every capture used in a comparison. Google’s visual elements guide describes those sources of variation.
Other circumstances—such as signed-in state, personalization, browser configuration, and network location—may also matter operationally. There is no universal control protocol established here for them. If they matter to your comparison, record what you actually used rather than implying that the captures followed a standard method.

- Using only a date: specify that it is the capture date, and add the time and timezone where possible.
- Confusing a result byline with the capture time: label the result’s displayed date separately, if you need it.
- Recording a shortened or altered query: keep the exact query in a note if the filename cannot preserve it.
- Editing the SERP to add labels: keep labels outside the search interface and preserve the original image.
- Comparing screenshots without context: record engine, device, location, language, and timestamp for each capture; state any other conditions you controlled.
- Claiming a ranking trend from one image: treat a screenshot as evidence of one captured view, not proof of cause or a general trend.

Is a date shown beside a Google result the date I captured the screenshot?
No. It may be Google’s estimate of the page’s publication or significant update date; label it separately from the screenshot’s capture timestamp.
