To improve at Wordle without seeing the answer, make each guess do a job: use early turns to learn about letters, use later turns to test the positions and combinations still possible, and keep repeated letters in play until feedback rules them out. No opening word is guaranteed to be best for every player or answer set.
Make each guess earn information
Before you enter a word, decide what you want the guess to reveal. Depending on the feedback so far, a useful turn might test whether several new letters appear in the answer, check where a known letter can go, or distinguish among a smaller set of plausible words.

After your first guess, a second guess can be used to test different letters and eliminate possibilities, rather than immediately reusing the same letters. That is a strategy described in NYT-sourced advice republished by The Irish Times; it is a heuristic, not a rule that every second guess should ignore the clues already found.
Turn the feedback into constraints
- Keep green letters fixed. Record each green letter in its confirmed position.
- Move yellow letters. A yellow letter is present but was not in the position you just tested, so consider other available positions.
- Track ruled-out letters. Use gray feedback to avoid letters the feedback establishes are absent, while accounting for the possibility that another copy of a letter is present.
- Preserve repeat-letter possibilities. A green or yellow mark does not, by itself, prove that the answer contains that letter only once. Do not discard candidates with a repeat unless the feedback rules them out.
Repeated letters can make feedback less intuitive: one copy may be marked while another is not. NYT-sourced strategy advice and the Wordle board game’s rulebook both advise players to watch for repeats. The board-game guidance is for the physical adaptation, not a separate authority on the current digital answer list. See the strategy advice and the board-game rulebook.

Choose between a broad probe and a candidate test
When the pattern is still broad
In normal mode, a guess containing several untested letters can be useful when you still have many possibilities. It may reveal which letters to keep or eliminate, even if the guessed word itself is not the answer. This trades a turn that tests letters for one that directly tries a plausible solution.
When clues have narrowed the field
Once the known positions and letters make the candidate pool smaller, favor a guess that fits those constraints and distinguishes among plausible answers. Another broad probe may spend a turn testing letters that no longer matter. The better choice depends on the feedback and how many guesses remain; this approach improves the quality of your decisions but cannot guarantee a solve in fewer guesses.

Pick a starting word for your priorities
One source-reported heuristic is to begin with a word containing several vowels; another is to use different letters on the next guess to support elimination. Neither is a universal optimum. A starter’s value depends on the answer set, whether you prefer broad letter coverage or keeping plausible answers available, and whether you play Hard Mode.

| Approach | Potential benefit | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Several vowels | Can test whether common vowel sounds are present. | Does not test as many consonants and does not guarantee useful positions. |
| Different letters on the next guess | Can rule out more letters while the pattern remains broad. | May not preserve every revealed hint in Hard Mode, and may be less useful once clues narrow the candidates. |
| Test a plausible candidate | Can both fit the known constraints and potentially solve the puzzle. | May reveal less about unrelated, untested letters if the candidate is wrong. |
A 2022 computational study tested strategies against a modeled historical answer set of 2,315 possible answers. In its baseline simulator, it reported an average of 4.078 guesses and more than six trials in 1.77% of cases; its best-performing tested strategy averaged 3.674 guesses and failed in 0.65% of cases. These are results for that paper’s simulated setup, not a current NYT answer-list description or a promise about human results. The paper is available at arXiv. No current authoritative ranking establishes one universally best opener, and no suitable current primary-source figure establishes the average human solve count.

Decide whether Hard Mode suits you
According to the NYT-sourced strategy guide, Hard Mode requires you to use revealed hints in subsequent guesses. That constraint can make it harder to spend a turn testing unrelated letters, particularly when the answer pattern is still broad. Choose it if the added constraint is enjoyable; it changes the search space rather than guaranteeing better results.
