Improve your Wordle decisions by choosing guesses that reveal several useful letters, then treating every color as a constraint. In regular mode, an exploratory guess can test multiple candidates instead of forcing a blind choice. No opener guarantees a better score: the best move depends on the remaining possibilities, the mode you play, and whether you value a strong average or a memorable routine.
Choose early guesses for information
A guess is useful when its letters are common, distinct, and likely to narrow the answer pool. NYT Wordle editor Tracy Bennett recommends two sequential guesses that cover common consonants and vowels, while aiming to use as many unique letters as practical in the first three moves. She names common consonants as R, S, T, L, and N, and vowels as A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y. Apple’s App Store editorial interview with Bennett gives this as strategic guidance, rather than a requirement to use a particular pair of words.

For your own opening routine, prioritize distinct letters over repeating a letter just because it appears in a familiar word. A consistent opener can make it easier to compare feedback from game to game; changing openers can keep play fresh, but there is no evidence here that variety itself improves scores. Letter frequency is only one factor, too: the position of a letter and the candidates left after feedback matter.
Compare openers by what they optimize
There is no universally settled best starting word. Rankings reflect a particular answer pool, scoring method, and tool version, so treat them as guidance rather than rules.
#1 Best Overall
| Opener or result | What the cited analysis says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| SLATE, CRANE, TRACE, CRATE, CARTE | TechRadar reported on February 1, 2026, that WordleBot gave each a skill score of 99/100. | A dated WordleBot ranking, not proof that any one word is best for every player or answer set. |
| SALET | TechRadar reported that MIT researchers found an average of 3.421 guesses and described it as 1% better than SLATE for narrowing choices. | Secondary reporting of a research result; the figure is not an independently verified primary-paper finding here. |
| Most frequent answer letters in TechRadar’s examined set | E: 1,230; A: 975; R: 897; O: 753; T: 729. | Counts from that analysis, not a guarantee about every future answer list. |
| Best tested strategy in Liu’s simulator | Average of 3.674 guesses, with 0.65% unsolved beyond six trials, in a 2022 simulation of 2,315 answers using a Hard Mode-rules baseline. | Simulator results, not expected human performance. The baseline averaged 4.078 guesses and failed 1.77% of the time. |
TechRadar’s 2026 analysis of WordleBot and starting words and Chao-Lin Liu’s 2022 paper on Wordle strategies optimize or measure different things. When comparing suggestions, consider letter frequency, distinctness, plausible letter positions, whether the word fits Hard Mode, how comfortable it is for you to remember, and the date and method behind its ranking.
Turn colors into candidate constraints
After each guess, use the feedback to update what can still be true: keep a green letter in its confirmed position, and move a yellow letter to a different position. Gray feedback is evidence that a letter is absent, but repeated-letter cases can make gray tiles less straightforward to interpret when another copy of that letter received a different color. Apply the game’s displayed instructions to the exact pattern rather than assuming every gray tile always rules out every occurrence.

The official NYT Wordle page was not available for verification in the source material, so these color explanations should not be read as a quotation of current official rule wording. The practical habit is to maintain a short list of fixed positions, forbidden positions, and letters that may still be present, then use each new result to revise that list.

If several answers fit the known pattern, a guess that tests multiple possibilities may be more valuable than choosing one candidate and hoping. Bennett gives the pattern _ound as an example: if a guess is available to spend, “brush” tests several possible first letters and can distinguish among words such as bound, round, sound, and hound. This advice assumes you are not playing Hard Mode, where confirmed clues constrain later guesses.
Think of a probe as an information-gathering move, not a wasted guess. It makes sense when one guess can eliminate enough candidates to make the next choice clearer. It is less useful when the remaining possibilities are already few or a direct answer is the better use of a limited turn.
Account for Hard Mode before choosing a probe
Hard Mode reduces flexibility because confirmed green and yellow letters must be used in subsequent guesses, according to the independent service fwordle’s FAQ. That description is third-party guidance, not verified current NYT interface wording. The strategic trade-off is clear: constraints may keep guesses aligned with clues, but they can prevent a fully unconstrained probe like Bennett’s “brush” example.
Rank #4
Decide whether you want that constraint before the puzzle gets crowded. In regular mode, you can choose a word mainly to test uncertain letters; in Hard Mode, you need to plan around confirmed letters while still seeking useful new information.

If you want assistance without seeing the answer, stop at a hint or a count of remaining candidates. fwordle describes a hint sequence that moves from cryptic or category clues toward a first-letter clue and, finally, an answer reveal that requires two taps to confirm. Its Analysis Mode gives a count without displaying candidate words; its Solution Mode shows words. It is an independent service and says it is not affiliated with The New York Times.

Because those later steps can reveal more than you intend, read the labels before tapping and stop as soon as you have enough information. You can also skip external help entirely and use your own notes on fixed positions, excluded positions, and possible letters.
