Google says there are no special AI-only optimizations for its AI Overviews or AI Mode. Meeting eligibility requirements creates an opportunity to appear; it does not guarantee that a page will be selected.
How AI search visibility works
Google’s AI search features draw on its Search index and ranking and quality systems. Its guide describes retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out as ways the systems retrieve relevant information and surface supporting pages. In practice, a page must first be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet in Search before it can be considered as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google does not guarantee that it will crawl, index, or serve any particular page.

Google says there are no additional technical requirements for eligibility in these features. The practical goal is therefore not to optimize for a separate AI ranking system, but to make a page discoverable, understandable, trustworthy, and genuinely useful.

Start with the page you want surfaced. Confirm that it loads successfully and that Googlebot is not blocked by robots.txt, your hosting provider, a CDN, or another access control. Then check whether the page is indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Google Search Console’s URL Inspection tool can help diagnose indexing problems; Google’s AI Features and Your Website documentation explains the eligibility requirement.
#1 Best Overall
- Link important pages from other pages on your site using crawlable links so search engines can discover them.
- Check for accidental noindex directives, blocked resources, access errors, or canonical settings that point away from the intended page.
- Use Search Console to inspect the URL and review any reported indexing issue.
Passing these checks makes a page eligible for consideration; it does not compel Google to include it in a search result or AI answer. Google’s Search Essentials covers foundational requirements and guidance.
2. Make the page worth citing
Build the page around a real reader need, then answer it with useful detail, accurate information, and a point of view that adds something beyond what is already widely available. Original data, clear explanations, practical examples, or firsthand experience can make a page more distinctive—but only describe experience or testing that actually took place.
Rank #2
Use terms that accurately describe the topic in prominent elements such as the page title and main heading. Keep the subject clear throughout the page, and choose a format and length that suit the reader’s task. Google says there is no ideal page length for AI search and no need to rewrite content in a special AI style. Its guide to generative AI features on Google Search recommends content with distinct value rather than a restatement of existing material.

A clear site structure helps both people and search systems navigate your content. Organize each page around its main subject, use descriptive internal links, and make the main information easy to read. Keep essential information available as text; use relevant images or video to support the explanation when they add value. Make sure the page works well on mobile.
Rank #3
If you use structured data, it should accurately describe content that is visible on the page and follow Google’s rules. Structured data can support broader Search features, but Google does not require special schema markup for generative AI results. These are sound search and usability practices, not secret AI ranking factors.
4. Avoid AI-search shortcuts that Google does not require
Several popular recommendations are not Google-specific requirements. Google says Search ignores llms.txt for visibility, and that the file neither helps nor harms rankings in Google Search. Other services may use such files, so this statement should not be assumed to apply across every search or AI product.
- Do not add an AI-only text file just for Google. Google says llms.txt is not used for Google Search visibility.
- Do not split every page into tiny “AI chunks.” Google sets no such requirement and says there is no ideal page length.
- Do not add special AI schema. No generative-AI-specific schema.org markup is required. Use structured data only when it accurately reflects visible content and serves an appropriate Search purpose.
- Do not rewrite into an artificial “AI style.” Write naturally for the audience and the task.
5. Use AI in publishing without sacrificing quality
AI tools can assist with research and structure, but publishing large numbers of low-value pages can violate Google’s scaled content abuse policy. Review generated material before publication: verify factual claims and metadata, check that the page answers the intended question, and add meaningful value rather than merely producing more pages. Disclose how content was created when that context helps readers understand it.
Google’s guidance on using generative AI content on your website, updated October 1, 2026, emphasizes accuracy, quality, and trustworthiness.

6. Measure appearances with the right tools
Use first-party reporting to see what is being reported, then interpret the figures within each tool’s limits. Google Search Console’s Generative AI performance report and Microsoft Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report expose different measures; neither turns a citation or impression into a guaranteed ranking or traffic outcome.
| Tool | What it reports | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console Generative AI performance report | Generative AI impressions and pages, with country, device (for Search results), and time breakdowns, plus Search and Discover views. Google announced the report on June 3, 2026, and said rollout to all websites worldwide was complete by August 31, 2026. Google Search Central announcement. | Reported appearances and impressions do not guarantee a position or future visibility. |
| Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance | Total citations, average cited pages, sampled grounding queries, page-level citation activity, and trends across supported AI experiences. Microsoft described the feature as a public preview in its February 10, 2026 announcement. Bing Webmaster Blog announcement. | Bing says citation metrics do not establish ranking, authority, or a page’s placement in any particular answer. The cited announcement does not establish whether the preview status has since changed. |
In either tool, compare dates and pages to spot changes and identify content that may need improvement. For Bing, use sampled grounding queries and cited URLs to understand which pages are referenced and in what query contexts, not as a definitive ranking report. Microsoft product managers Krishna Madhavan, Meenaz Merchant, Fabrice Canel, and Saral Nigam described the preview as providing visibility into how often content is cited and which URLs are referenced.
