How to Improve Your Smart TV’s Wi-Fi Connection

Start by checking whether other devices can use your Wi-Fi. Then improve router placement, test the TV’s supported bands, and consider Ethernet or coverage equipment only if needed.

If your smart TV buffers, drops Wi-Fi, or will not connect, first check whether other devices can use the same network. If they can, troubleshoot the TV and the wireless path to it before buying equipment. If they cannot, restart the modem and router and check with your internet provider if service does not return.

First, find out whether the problem is the TV or the network

  1. On a phone or laptop connected to the same Wi-Fi, try opening a website or streaming service. If that device also has no internet, restart the modem and router; contact your internet service provider if the connection remains down. LG Support recommends checking other devices to distinguish a TV issue from a network problem.
  2. If other devices work, check the TV’s network status and confirm that it is trying to join the right network name with the correct password. If it used to work, consider whether the router’s name, password, or security settings have changed. Follow instructions for your TV model before resetting its network settings. Samsung’s TV Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance and LG’s connection guidance advise checking the connection and network details.

Try these free fixes in order

Restart the TV and network equipment

Turn the TV off, then restart the modem and router. LG advises unplugging modem and router power for about 10 seconds before plugging them back in. Wait until the network equipment is back online, then test the TV again. Exact restart and reset procedures can vary by model.

Improve the router-to-TV path

Move the router closer to the TV if possible. Put it above floor level, and avoid hiding it behind furniture or placing it beside metal objects. Thick walls, distance, and other obstructions can weaken the signal; common sources of wireless interference can also affect stability. Samsung, LG, and Sony identify distance or obstacles as potential causes of weak or unstable connections.

Test both Wi-Fi bands, if your TV supports them

At the TV’s location, try the available 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. A 2.4 GHz connection is often more suitable when the TV is farther away or separated from the router by walls; 5 GHz may work better when the TV is nearby. Neither is automatically faster in your home: test the actual connection, and check that the TV supports the band. Sony notes that 5 GHz availability can vary by TV and region. Sony’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance and Sony’s guidance on wireless bands cover these factors.

Check whether the network is busy

Temporarily pause downloads or streaming on other devices and retest the TV. Samsung recommends testing with fewer devices connected when investigating connection problems. If that changes the result, network congestion or router capacity may be a factor. A faster internet plan alone will not fix a weak signal between the router and TV.

Choose a more reliable connection if Wi-Fi still fails

Option Best fit What to check
Ethernet cable The router or a LAN outlet is close enough for a practical cable run. Confirm the TV has an Ethernet/LAN port, use a known-good cable, and make sure both ends are seated. A wired link avoids the TV’s Wi-Fi connection, but does not raise the maximum speed of your internet plan. See Sony’s wired LAN troubleshooting guidance.
Wi-Fi range extender One localized weak-signal area, with a spot nearby where the extender can still receive a good router signal. LG warns: “A Wi-Fi extender can improve your signal range, but depending on your environment, it may cause slower speeds or unstable connections.” TP-Link’s general placement guidance is to put an extender about halfway between the router and weak area; test performance at the TV. LG Support; TP-Link placement guidance.
Extender with an Ethernet port The TV can connect by cable to an extender placed nearby. The TV-to-extender segment is wired, but unless the extender has a wired backhaul, its link to the router is still wireless. Check port support and compatibility. TP-Link’s extender guidance.
Mesh Wi-Fi Several weak areas, a larger home, or a multi-story layout. Compare compatibility with your existing router, node placement, and whether Ethernet backhaul is available. Mesh adds equipment; it is not necessary for a single weak spot if a simpler fix works. TP-Link networking guidance.
Powerline adapter kit Wireless backhaul is difficult and a suitable electrical circuit is available. TP-Link says both adapters must be on the same electrical circuit. Actual performance depends on the home’s wiring. TP-Link powerline guidance.
Replacement router Checks point to router coverage, age, or capacity as the wider household problem. First test placement and settings; then compare coverage needs and compatibility with your TV and other devices. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance.

When to use Ethernet, an extender, or mesh

Choose Ethernet for a practical cable run

If the TV is near the router or a LAN outlet, a cable is a straightforward way to bypass the TV’s wireless link. Verify the TV has a port and test with a cable known to work. Sony recommends wired LAN when wireless troubleshooting has not resolved ongoing connection trouble. Sony support.

Choose an extender for one dead zone

An extender makes sense when the weak area is localized and you can place the unit where it still gets a usable signal from the router. An extender cannot compensate for a poor connection at its own location, and it may not improve speed or stability. Compare the result at the TV rather than relying on signal bars alone.

Choose mesh for multiple weak areas

If several rooms or floors have weak coverage, a mesh system may suit the layout better than trying to target each spot with an extender. Check whether it works with your current router and whether nodes can connect through Ethernet backhaul.

  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES TO YOUR NETWORK: Connect more devices that are out of range from your main router while eliminating poor performance and weak WiFi.
  • WIFI EXTENDER WITH GIGABIT ETHERNET PORT: Experience wired speed and reliability anywhere in your home by connecting your favorite device to the gigabit ethernet port.

Consider powerline only if the wiring suits it

Powerline adapters carry network data over electrical wiring, which can help when a long Wi-Fi path is the obstacle. The adapters need to be on the same electrical circuit according to TP-Link, and wiring conditions affect the result.

If the TV still will not connect

  • Check the TV manufacturer’s support instructions for your exact model and region; menu labels and network features differ.
  • If other devices also lose internet, focus on the modem, router, or ISP rather than repeatedly resetting the TV.
  • If only the TV fails despite correct credentials and a working network, follow the manufacturer’s model-specific network reset or service guidance.
  • For persistent dropouts, test Ethernet if available before replacing equipment; if using an extender or mesh, compare connection quality at the TV’s location.
