Check your speed against Xbox’s device-specific recommendations, close unnecessary background tabs, and confirm that your browser or device is supported. These steps can help, but meeting a speed recommendation does not guarantee smooth play.
1. Use the most reliable connection available
Choose Ethernet when your device supports it
Xbox recommends a wired Ethernet connection where possible. A cable avoids the wireless link between your device and router, making it a useful first test if you experience stalls or inconsistent play. Ethernet is not an option for every phone or tablet; use Wi-Fi on devices without a suitable port or adapter.

On Wi-Fi, use 5 GHz and stay near the router
Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi for wireless cloud gaming. If your router has both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, check that the gaming device is actually connected to the 5 GHz network; having a dual-band router alone does not ensure that. Xbox’s cloud gaming page gives different recommended speeds by device class. Its separate Xbox Wire getting-started guide gives a general recommendation of at least 20 Mbps for stable cloud gaming. These figures are recommendations, not guarantees of low latency, a sharp picture, or uninterrupted play.

A speed test measures only part of the connection experience. Xbox says performance can also vary with connection, user location, device, and other factors. A high result therefore cannot, by itself, establish that a particular stream will be responsive or stable.

3. Reduce avoidable load on the device
Close browser tabs and other background activity you do not need, then try a session closer to the router. Microsoft lists closing unnecessary background tabs among its cloud-gaming troubleshooting suggestions. Treat this as a practical check rather than a guaranteed cure: it may help when local device activity or the wireless link is contributing to the problem.

Xbox lists browsers including Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Safari on its cloud gaming page. Support and availability can differ by device and change over time, so check Xbox’s current compatibility information for the specific device you want to use rather than assuming every browser or device is supported.

5. Treat Clarity Boost as a picture setting, not a lag fix
Microsoft Edge’s Clarity Boost is a visual-quality feature that uses client-side scaling to make streamed games look sharper in supported Edge setups. It may be worth trying if the image looks soft, but Microsoft’s descriptions do not establish it as a fix for input delay, freezes, or an unstable connection. For responsiveness problems, focus on the connection and device checks above. - Connect by Ethernet if your device supports it; otherwise select 5 GHz Wi-Fi and move closer to the router.
- Compare your connection with the recommendation for your device class, keeping in mind that the figures are not performance guarantees.
- Close unnecessary background tabs and try another session.
- Verify that your device and browser appear in Xbox’s current compatibility information.
- If the picture is soft, try Clarity Boost on a supported Edge setup. If play is laggy or freezes, continue troubleshooting the connection or device instead.
If play remains poor despite these checks, Xbox’s stated factors—including location and device—mean the cause may not be something a local setting can resolve. Avoid assuming a faster speed-test result or a router change will fix every source of streaming trouble.
