How to Improve The Witcher 3 Remastered Performance Without Sacrificing Image Quality

Improve The Witcher 3 Remastered performance by matching upscaling and demanding graphics options to your hardware, then testing changes against the same scene.

To improve performance in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered without needlessly degrading the image, first match the game’s upscaler to your GPU, then reduce only the demanding features your system cannot sustain. There is no universal best preset: resolution, hardware, scene and settings all affect frame rate. The steps below cover the current Remastered edition, released September 29, 2026; older guides may describe different graphics options.

Start with your platform, build and performance goal

Before changing graphics, identify the platform and current game build, your output resolution, and what you want to improve: a steadier frame rate, higher resolution, or ray-traced lighting. The PC settings below do not translate directly to console modes.

Remastered is available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. CD PROJEKT RED says existing owners can upgrade within the same platform ecosystem. Its PC renderer and supported features differ from older versions. See the official Remastered release notes.

Choose a frame-rate target you can actually sustain rather than optimizing for a peak number. CD PROJEKT RED cautions that performance varies with system configuration, graphics settings, output resolution, scene and gameplay; it specifically notes that higher resolution significantly affects FPS.

Improve PC performance while preserving image quality

1. Select an upscaler supported by your GPU

Remastered supports NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction, AMD FSR 4—including Frame Generation and Anti-Lag 2—on Radeon RX 7000 series and newer, FSR 2 as a fallback on unsupported GPUs, and Intel XeSS 2.0 with Frame Generation and Low Latency. Availability depends on the GPU and game build, so check the options your system actually exposes.

Start with the quality-oriented upscaling option at your intended display resolution. If performance still misses your target, test a lower render scale and compare the result for clarity as well as smoothness. The official feature list establishes compatibility, not one best preset for every PC. Check the Remastered feature notes.

2. Reduce ray tracing or path tracing only if needed

Ray tracing and path tracing add rendering costs that depend on your hardware and chosen resolution. Remastered adds path tracing on PC alongside enhanced ray-traced effects, but those options are not required for a good-looking image. If one is responsible for poor performance, turn it off or reduce it before lowering several conventional graphics settings at once.

CD PROJEKT RED’s RT Minimum, RT Recommended and Path Tracing targets use DLSS, FSR or XeSS set to Auto; its other listed configurations use native resolution with upscaling off. The Path Tracing configuration also uses upscaling and Frame Generation. Treat those targets as relevant only when your setup and settings resemble their stated conditions, not as a promise of your own frame rate. Read the official PC requirements and testing notes.

NVIDIA’s performance examples are vendor claims, not independent results or expectations for every PC. For example, NVIDIA reports up to 385 FPS at 4K on an RTX 5090 and up to 245 FPS on an RTX 5080 with Ultra+ path-traced settings, DLSS 4.5 6X Multi Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction. Those figures depend on the named GPUs and technologies. Read NVIDIA’s Remastered technology overview.

3. Change one demanding setting at a time

  1. Use the same scene and gameplay conditions as a comparison point.
  2. Change one demanding option—such as render scale, ray tracing or path tracing—then play or revisit that scene.
  3. Compare frame-rate stability, frame pacing and image clarity before making another change.
  4. Keep the change only if it improves the result you care about without an unacceptable loss in image quality.

This is a practical tuning method, not a claim that one preset has been benchmarked as optimal across systems.

Check common causes of stutter before buying hardware

For PC stutter or low frame rates, CD PROJEKT RED’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends a clean graphics-driver installation, verifying game files, disabling overlays and closing unnecessary applications. The support article predates Remastered, so use these as general diagnostics rather than a Remastered-specific fix list.

  • Clean-install the graphics driver: useful when a driver installation may be contributing to poor performance.
  • Verify the game files: checks for damaged or missing files.
  • Disable overlays and close unnecessary apps: helps rule out other software competing for resources or interfering with the game.
  • If the issue started after a driver update: the support page suggests trying the previous driver version and reporting the issue.

Follow the official PC performance troubleshooting steps before assuming that a graphics setting or hardware upgrade is the answer.

Understand what an SSD can—and cannot—fix

An SSD is now required under CD PROJEKT RED’s updated PC requirements. The publisher says it supports faster loading, smoother asset streaming and improved overall performance. That is a reason to address missing SSD storage, especially if loading or asset streaming is a problem; it does not establish that moving the game from an adequate SSD to a different SSD will raise average FPS. Choose a PS5 Pro mode by the trade-off you prefer

On PS5 Pro, the choice is between Performance Mode and Ray Tracing Mode. CD PROJEKT RED says Performance Mode targets 60 FPS and can reach 90 FPS on a VRR-capable display. Ray Tracing Mode targets 60 FPS; PSSR is intended to improve fidelity without sacrificing performance. These are mode targets, not a guarantee that every scene will hold a fixed frame rate. Read the PS5 Pro mode details.

  • Choose Performance Mode if smoother motion is the priority, particularly with a VRR-capable display.
  • Choose Ray Tracing Mode if the ray-traced presentation matters more to you and its stated 60 FPS target fits your preference.

When settings are not enough

Consider new hardware only after checking that your PC meets the requirements and trying the relevant software and settings changes. A graphics card is worth evaluating when your current GPU prevents you from reaching your chosen resolution, frame-rate target or rendering mode. The right choice depends on your actual CPU and GPU, budget and goal; the official requirements do not establish one card as suitable for everyone.
