If your Android tablet sounds quiet, crackly, or distorted, first raise media volume while audio is playing, check the app and sound settings, then rule out Bluetooth, accessories, and blocked speaker openings. If the problem persists across apps after a restart and software checks—or followed liquid exposure, a drop, or visible damage—stop troubleshooting and contact the tablet maker or an authorized repair provider.
Start with the volume stream and the app
Android devices can have separate controls for media, calls, notifications, and alarms. The volume buttons may adjust a different stream when no media is playing, so test with a familiar song, video, or other audio actively playing. This also helps avoid mistaking quiet notifications or an app-specific setting for a problem with the tablet’s speakers.

- Play audio and press the tablet’s volume-up button. Check the on-screen indicator to confirm that media volume rises and is not muted. If a volume panel appears, inspect its media control rather than assuming the main button changed every sound stream.
- Open the app’s own playback or sound controls. Make sure its volume is up and that mute is off. Some apps have their own playback level or mute button, so the tablet’s media slider may not be the only relevant control.
- Try another app or audio item. If only one app is affected, its own settings or behavior may be the cause rather than the tablet speakers. For a fair comparison, replay the same or a similar item at a comfortable level in another app.
- Open the tablet’s Settings and look under Sound or Sound & vibration for media volume and mute controls. Labels and paths vary by manufacturer and Android version, so use the settings search field if the menu is not where expected.
Lenovo’s Android-tablet support likewise recommends checking hardware volume, mute, Sound settings, and the affected app’s sound controls: Lenovo: No sound from built-in speaker – Android tablet. The useful first distinction is whether the sound is low in every app or only in one. A single-app problem gives you a more focused place to check; a problem across multiple apps warrants checking the tablet’s routing and system-level settings next.

Check where audio is going and whether the speakers are blocked
Sound may be routed to an accessory instead of the built-in speakers, or a case, film, or dirt may obstruct a speaker opening. Temporarily disconnect wired accessories, turn Bluetooth off, and remove any case or accessory that covers the speaker area. Then replay the same audio. Changing one thing at a time makes it easier to tell whether an accessory or setting affected the result.

- Inspect the speaker openings for visible dirt or obstruction. Do not push objects into the grille or try to dig out material; that risks damage and is not a safe way to clean an opening.
- Check whether a protective film, case, stand, or other attachment overlaps the speaker area. Remove it temporarily and test again rather than assuming it is not affecting sound.
- If headphones or an external speaker sound normal but the tablet’s own speakers remain distorted, that comparison points toward a local obstruction or built-in speaker problem; it does not prove which one is responsible.
- Turn Bluetooth off for the test, even if you do not intend to use a Bluetooth device. If the sound returns to the tablet speakers, reconnect devices only as needed and confirm which output is selected.
On Samsung Galaxy devices, check whether Separate app sound is sending media elsewhere. Samsung also recommends disconnecting external devices, disabling Bluetooth, and inspecting openings for blocked covers or dirt. Its settings paths can vary by model: Samsung: Troubleshooting speaker and sound issues on a Samsung Galaxy device.
These checks separate two different questions: whether the tablet is sending audio to the expected output, and whether the built-in speaker opening is clear. If disconnecting accessories does not change the result, reconnecting them is not a fix for persistent built-in-speaker distortion; continue with settings and software checks.
Look for balance, mute, and sound-processing settings
A tablet may play through only one speaker if left/right balance is off-center, or sound may seem muted because an accessibility or sound setting is enabled. Check the device’s own menus; names and locations differ. If the tablet has more than one speaker, a balance control can affect how sound is distributed, so check it before concluding that a speaker has failed.
Accessibility balance and mute
Look under Accessibility or Hearing enhancements for left/right audio balance and move the control to the center. Also check for a mute-all-sounds setting. Samsung Galaxy devices may include Left/right sound balance and Mute all sounds settings. Xiaomi documents that an off-center balance on the Pad Mini can leave sound coming from one speaker; this instruction is model-specific: Xiaomi: Why is there no sound from one of the Xiaomi Pad Mini’s speakers?
If you find a control that is already centered and mute is off, leave it alone and move on to another test. Do not assume a menu item exists just because another tablet has it. Manufacturer names and menu paths vary, and the same setting may be grouped under accessibility, hearing, or sound rather than under a universal Android menu.
Manufacturer profiles and effects
On Samsung Galaxy devices, check Do not disturb if alerts are missing, as well as Separate app sound, Left/right sound balance, and Mute all sounds where available. Samsung notes that menu paths vary by model. Do not disturb is especially relevant when the symptom is missing alerts; it is not, by itself, a diagnosis for distorted music or video.
If you installed an equalizer, sound profile, or volume-boosting app, temporarily disable it and retest to see whether processing is contributing to distortion. Treat this as a short diagnostic comparison, not a required step on every tablet: if you do not use such an app, there is nothing to disable. Likewise, do not raise an optional sound control simply because it is available if the audio is already crackling or distorted.

Some sound controls exist only on particular devices. Sony’s legacy SGPT-series tablet manual, for example, suggests checking playback volume and charge and trying xLOUD or Clear Phase settings when its speaker sounds distorted. Those controls are not general Android settings: Sony Tablet Help Guide. Use that advice only for a relevant Sony SGPT-series tablet, and check the manual for the exact model rather than searching for those names on another brand.
If the tablet got wet, dry it gently
After liquid exposure, power the tablet off and pat the exterior and openings dry with a clean, soft cloth. Do not use heat or compressed air. Samsung gives that advice for Galaxy devices; follow your own tablet’s water-resistance and service instructions, and do not assume it is water-resistant: Samsung Galaxy sound troubleshooting and Samsung: Speaker does not work properly on Samsung phone.
Do not keep testing sound or apply improvised drying methods if the tablet has been exposed to liquid. Gently drying the exterior is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s instructions or a service assessment, particularly if the sound problem began after the exposure. Water-resistance claims, where present, are model-specific; verify them for the exact tablet rather than assuming a tablet can safely be wet.
Samsung’s US phone guide also notes that Galaxy phone speakers may sound quiet, crackly, or distorted after a large change in ambient air pressure. That guidance concerns phones, not Android tablets generally, so it should not be treated as a tablet diagnosis or a reason to open a tray. It is not a universal explanation for a tablet’s sound problem.

If volume, routing, and visible obstructions do not explain the issue, use a simple software troubleshooting sequence. Make one change at a time and retest with the same audio where possible; this helps distinguish a temporary change from a lasting improvement.
- Restart the tablet and test the same audio again. This is a reversible check before moving to more disruptive steps.
- Open Settings and check for a system software update. The exact menu path depends on the manufacturer and Android version. Follow the tablet maker’s update instructions rather than relying on a path from a different device.
- Compare several apps, including built-in audio options where practical. A problem limited to one app is different from distortion across the tablet. If possible, compare built-in speakers with headphones or another output, too; that comparison can help narrow the issue but cannot identify a failed component with certainty.
- If your tablet has Safe mode, use the manufacturer’s instructions to enter it; the key sequence or menu differs by model. Test audio there. If it works in Safe mode, a downloaded app may be involved. Remove recently installed apps one at a time, testing after each removal, rather than removing many apps at once and losing track of what changed.
Samsung recommends updates and Safe mode as checks for Galaxy audio problems. Its instructions are device-specific, so consult the guide for your model: Samsung Galaxy sound troubleshooting. Safe mode is useful here as a comparison: if sound is still distorted there, a recently downloaded app is less likely to explain the symptom; if sound improves, investigate downloaded apps before assuming the speaker hardware is at fault.
When to stop and seek service
Contact the tablet manufacturer or an authorized repair provider if distortion or low volume remains across apps after checking settings, routing, restart, updates, and Safe mode. Escalate sooner if the problem began after a drop or liquid exposure, or if the tablet has visible damage. Samsung similarly recommends service when its Galaxy troubleshooting steps do not resolve the problem.

When you contact support, be ready to describe whether the problem affects all apps or only one, whether it occurs through built-in speakers and other audio outputs, and which reversible checks you have tried. Include the exact model and Android version if available. This gives support a clearer account without treating any single comparison as proof of the cause. Check the manufacturer’s warranty and service instructions for your exact device; coverage and repair routes vary.
A factory reset is a last resort, not the next routine test. It erases user data, so back up important information first and follow the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions. Samsung’s phone guidance also cautions about data loss: Samsung: Speaker does not work properly on Samsung phone. A reset is not a substitute for service when the problem followed physical damage or liquid exposure, and it should not be done casually just to test a speaker.
Use headphones or an external speaker only as a workaround
A Bluetooth speaker or compatible wired headphones can provide alternate audio while you investigate, but neither repairs a faulty built-in speaker. Wired compatibility depends on the tablet’s ports and any required adapter; Bluetooth output must be selected and connected. These are optional alternatives, not required troubleshooting purchases.
If an alternate output is clear while the tablet speakers are not, that comparison can help narrow the issue, but it is not a substitute for service when the built-in speakers remain faulty. If you choose a Bluetooth speaker, consider compatibility and portability; for wired headphones, check the tablet’s available port and whether an adapter is needed. In either case, think of the accessory as a temporary way to listen, not as evidence that the tablet’s built-in speakers have been repaired.
Verify instructions for your exact model
Manufacturer menus, Safe mode steps, water-resistance claims, warranty coverage, and repair routes differ across tablets and Android versions. Check support instructions for the exact model before following device-specific steps. The Samsung, Lenovo, Xiaomi, and Sony guidance linked above applies to the devices or product families identified in those sources, not to every Android tablet.

Why is my Android tablet speaker so quiet?
First play audio and raise the media volume while it is playing; the volume buttons can control different sound streams at different times. Check the app’s own volume and mute controls, then turn Bluetooth off, disconnect wired accessories, and remove anything covering the speaker opening. If sound remains quiet across apps, check relevant sound settings and follow the software checks in this guide.

Why does my tablet sound distorted or crackly?
Compare more than one app and output, and check for a covered or visibly dirty speaker opening, a sound-processing app, or a relevant manufacturer sound setting. Restart and check for software updates. If distortion persists across apps after these checks—or began after a drop or liquid exposure—contact the tablet maker or an authorized repair provider.
Why is sound coming from only one speaker?
Check the left/right audio balance under Accessibility, Hearing enhancements, or the device’s sound settings, and make sure mute-all-sounds is off. Menu names and paths vary. Xiaomi’s guidance about an off-center balance applies specifically to the Pad Mini; if centering the setting does not help, compare another app and contact support if the issue persists.
Should I use a factory reset to fix distorted tablet speakers?
No—not as a routine next step. A factory reset erases user data, so it is a last resort and requires a backup and model-specific manufacturer instructions. Try reversible checks first, and seek service sooner if the problem followed damage or liquid exposure.
Can headphones or a Bluetooth speaker fix a bad built-in tablet speaker?
They can provide alternate audio as a workaround, but they do not repair the built-in speaker. Wired headphone compatibility depends on the tablet’s ports and any needed adapter; Bluetooth requires a compatible connected device and selected output. Clear audio through an accessory can help narrow the comparison, but does not prove the built-in speaker’s cause.
What should I do if my tablet got wet and now sounds distorted?
Power it off and gently pat the exterior and openings dry with a clean, soft cloth. Do not use heat or compressed air, and follow the exact tablet’s water-resistance and service instructions. Do not assume every tablet is water-resistant; contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider if the problem persists.
The Bottom Line
Check media volume during playback, the app’s controls, Bluetooth and accessories, speaker openings, and relevant balance or mute settings. Then restart, check for updates, and use Safe mode if your model supports it. If distortion or low volume persists across apps—or followed liquid exposure, a drop, or visible damage—stop troubleshooting and contact the tablet maker or an authorized repair provider.
