To make visual regression screenshots less flaky, make each capture reproducible: use the same browser and operating environment as the baseline, wait for fonts and assets, stabilize changing content, and tune comparison sensitivity without masking real defects. If you test multiple browsers or platforms, keep separate baselines where their rendering differs.
Why visual regression screenshots differ
A screenshot can change even when your application code has not. Browser version, host operating system, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and available fonts can all affect rendering. Playwright cautions that these conditions can produce different screenshots; use a consistent environment for both baselines and comparisons. Playwright’s visual-comparisons guidance

Browser and platform differences can also affect fonts and antialiasing. If your test matrix deliberately covers several browsers or operating systems, treat each intended environment as its own comparison target rather than comparing its output against a baseline made elsewhere.
Make the capture repeatable
1. Pin the environment
- Use the same browser build, operating-system image, browser settings, and rendering mode when creating and checking baselines.
- In continuous integration, pin the worker image and browser version so an infrastructure update does not silently change captures.
- For intentional cross-browser or cross-platform coverage, create and maintain a baseline for each environment you need to verify.
Playwright snapshot names can include browser and platform identifiers, which helps keep those comparisons distinct. Playwright visual comparisons

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
2. Wait for the state and its resources
Capture only after the page has reached the state your test is meant to verify. Make sure required web fonts, images, and other assets have loaded; a page that appears mostly rendered may still change when a delayed font or image arrives. Chromatic’s guidance for unstable snapshots recommends inspecting traces and resource loading, preloading fonts, and serving resources statically when appropriate. Chromatic unstable-test debugging
In Playwright, screenshot assertions retry capture until consecutive screenshots match, which can help with transient rendering. That is not a substitute for making the page deterministic: a rotating banner or periodically updated timestamp can keep changing indefinitely. Playwright visual comparisons
3. Control content that changes on its own
Dates, random values, rotating promotions, animations, and third-party embeds can create diffs unrelated to the UI change under test. Prefer deterministic test data or disable the source of variability in the test environment. If a region is genuinely irrelevant to the assertion, use the capture tool’s supported masking or stylesheet mechanism; Playwright supports a custom screenshot stylesheet for filtering volatile elements. Do not hide a region merely because it is noisy if its appearance or behavior is part of what the test should catch. Fixing the underlying source of instability is safer than broadly ignoring pixels.
4. Tune diff sensitivity against real changes
Playwright provides maxDiffPixels and threshold settings. Chromatic documents controls for diff threshold, whether antialiasing is included, and viewport cropping. Start with settings that reveal the UI changes you care about, then assess them by reviewing actual failed comparisons. Playwright visual comparisons · Chromatic parameters and globals

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Increasing tolerance or excluding antialiasing may reduce rendering noise, but a permissive threshold can also conceal a small genuine regression. Cropping can focus a comparison on a relevant region, but it will not validate what falls outside the crop. There is no universally correct threshold: the right setting depends on the interface and the defects your tests are intended to catch.
Choose the visual test surface that fits the UI
Component-level and end-to-end screenshots answer different questions. A design-system component may be easiest to exercise as a Storybook story; a page state reached through a user journey may belong in a browser test. Quick Recap
Troubleshoot unstable or misleading diffs
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| The same test fails intermittently | Capture occurs during rendering, or content changes between runs. | Wait for the intended state and required resources; make data deterministic; inspect traces and resource loading. For Chromatic workflows, see its unstable-test debugging guidance. |
| Text wraps or looks different in CI | Different browser, OS, fonts, settings, or rendering mode. | Compare the baseline and run environments; pin them, or use distinct baselines for intentionally different platforms. |
| Images or typography appear missing | Assets or fonts have not loaded by capture time, or are unavailable in the capture environment. | Check network and trace details, ensure resources are served to the test, and consider font preloading or static resources where appropriate. |
| Diffs come from a banner or timestamp | Volatile content is not controlled. | Freeze the data or behavior if possible; otherwise filter only the irrelevant region using a supported mechanism. |
| Small meaningful changes are not detected | Comparison sensitivity may be too permissive, or the relevant pixels are outside a crop. | Review threshold and antialiasing settings and the crop against the change you need to catch; validate against actual regressions. |
| Minor rendering noise causes too many failures | Settings are more sensitive than the intended assertion, or environments are inconsistent. | First standardize capture conditions. Then adjust threshold or antialiasing treatment cautiously, checking that real UI defects still fail. |
Keep the workflow reliable over time
- Version the test code and baseline images together so reviewers can see what changed.
- When browser or operating-system images are intentionally upgraded, expect that the rendering environment may change; review and update the relevant baselines deliberately rather than treating every resulting diff as an application regression.
- Keep the comparison scope aligned with the test’s purpose: a component test should not be asked to validate a full user journey, and an end-to-end capture should wait for the actual state under test.
- Review ignored regions and tolerance settings periodically. A workaround that was safe for one volatile widget may later hide a useful signal if applied too broadly.
