Use WebdriverIO’s hideElements option to make a navbar invisible in a visual screenshot while preserving its layout space. Use removeElements instead if the screenshot should close that space and allow the page content to move up.
Hide a navbar without changing the page layout
Pass the resolved navbar element in the hideElements array for the visual-testing method you are using:

})Replace header nav with a locator that uniquely identifies your application’s navbar. WebdriverIO uses CSS selectors by default when you do not specify another selector strategy. See the WebdriverIO selector documentation for selector conventions.
Choose between hiding and removing

Apply the option to the screenshot you compare
WebdriverIO visual testing supports comparisons for screens, elements, and full-page captures. Keep the assertion’s capture scope matched to the view you intend to compare, and pass the hide or remove option to that screenshot method. For a full-page capture, inspect the method’s own options and consider how the page behaves while it is captured; hiding preserves the navbar’s space, while removing it can change the layout.
WebdriverIO lists Mocha, Jasmine, and CucumberJS among the supported visual-test runner frameworks. The visual assertion syntax can depend on the service and test setup; use the corresponding method for the installed version rather than assuming every project uses checkScreen. Reduce unrelated visual differences
Navbar visibility is only one source of screenshot variation. The service option reference documents these defaults and controls:
waitForFontsLoadeddefaults totrue, helping avoid captures before fonts have loaded.hideScrollBarsdefaults totrue.disableCSSAnimationis available and defaults tofalse. Enable it if CSS motion is introducing unwanted differences.
These settings do not guarantee identical rendering across browsers, operating systems, or devices. Consult the visual-testing service options and set only what suits the comparisons you need.

Troubleshoot a navbar that still appears
- The element is not found or the option has no effect: verify that the selector matches the navbar in the current page state and resolves to the intended WebdriverIO element. Use a selector that uniquely identifies the navigation element.
- The content jumps upward: use
hideElementsrather thanremoveElementsif the navbar’s layout space should remain. - An empty band remains at the top: that is expected with
hideElements, because it appliesvisibility: hidden. UseremoveElementsif that space should collapse. - The comparison still varies: check font loading and CSS animation settings, as well as the browser and capture scope. The documented defaults help with some rendering variables but are not a cross-environment matching guarantee.
- The option is rejected or behaves differently: confirm the installed
@wdio/visual-serviceversion and the options supported by the screenshot method you call.
