Sony recommends an internet connection of at least 15 Mbps for a better play experience, but speed alone cannot guarantee smooth play.

Check whether the problem affects other devices
Test Wi-Fi on another device. If it also has connection problems, the issue may be with your home internet service; Sony advises contacting your internet service provider in that case. On the Portal, check its connection under Quick Menu > Settings > Network. Sony’s PS Portal troubleshooting guide covers these checks.

Pause downloads and other heavy network activity
Pause downloads on connected devices and reduce other network use while playing. This can help when multiple devices are competing for the same connection, though it cannot fix a weak Wi-Fi signal or an internet-service problem.

Improve the Portal’s Wi-Fi signal
Sony recommends connecting the Portal over 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Move the Portal and PS5 closer to the router where practical, and reduce obstacles between the devices and the router. If your router’s band steering repeatedly switches the Portal between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and the connection becomes unstable, disable band steering if your router provides that option.

In practice, 5 GHz is Sony’s recommendation, but the better connection in a particular room depends on the signal reaching that room. If 5 GHz coverage is too weak or unstable, address the coverage problem rather than assuming that changing bands alone will solve it.

Connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet
Sony recommends a wired internet connection for the PS5 when possible. If the console currently uses Wi-Fi, connecting it to the router with an Ethernet cable is a useful first hardware change to try. The cable needs to reach from the PS5 to the router; Sony does not specify a required cable model or category. You do not need to buy one if your PS5 is already wired or running a cable is impractical.

View the Portal’s network status
Open Quick Menu > Troubleshoot > Show Network Status to view the Portal’s network status, as listed on Sony’s PS Portal system software information page. Menu labels may change with software updates, so consult Sony’s current support page if they differ on your device.

Choose a connection setup that suits your home
There are two main options for the PS5’s link to the router. Ethernet avoids relying on the console’s Wi-Fi connection, but requires a cable that can reach the router. Wi-Fi avoids running a cable, but its reliability depends on the wireless signal in the PS5’s location.

For the Portal’s wireless connection, start with 5 GHz if it has a stable signal where you play. If a router’s band steering is causing repeated switches between bands and disrupting play, disable that feature if possible. Sony does not rank specific routers or say that buying a new router is always necessary; consider new equipment only if your existing setup cannot provide stable 5 GHz service or adequate coverage.

Sony’s 2024 PlayStation Blog update announcement says the Portal requires a Wi-Fi connection of at least 5 Mbps and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better play experience. Sony’s current PS Portal Remote Play support guidance also recommends at least 15 Mbps.

These are connection-speed figures, not guarantees of smooth play. Sony says connection quality varies with the network environment. Its published guidance does not give a Portal-specific latency target, packet-loss threshold, or guaranteed resolution at a given speed. A speed test that reaches 15 Mbps therefore does not rule out local Wi-Fi interference, weak coverage, or competition from other devices.
What to expect on public Wi-Fi
The Portal can work on suitable broadband Wi-Fi away from home, including some public networks that require sign-in validation. However, Sony cautions that public Wi-Fi quality may be outside your control. If play is unstable on a public network, you may not be able to change its coverage, congestion, or configuration.
