Cut flowers and their vase water can carry bacteria and fungi, but finding microbes there does not show that a bouquet makes people sick at home. The evidence cited by the CDC is mainly from healthcare settings and laboratory sampling; it does not quantify the chance of illness in an ordinary household. Simple handwashing and vase cleaning are sensible, while healthcare facilities take extra precautions around some severely immunocompromised patients.
What the evidence says about flowers and microbes
Microbes can grow in vase water, particularly when it is not changed often. The CDC summarizes studies reporting concentrations from 104 to 1010 colony-forming units per milliliter (CFU/mL) in flower-vase water. That range describes measured microbial concentrations—not the likelihood that someone will become ill.

A 1991 study by K. S. Kates and colleagues found 41 bacterial species among 60 flower-vase-water samples, with a mean total aerobic bacterial count of 4.5 × 108 organisms per 500 mL. Those are findings from the study’s samples, not an estimate of what is typical in homes today. Read the 1991 study.
Flowers and ornamental plants can also be reservoirs for Aspergillus and other fungi, and fungal spores can disperse. The CDC’s infection-control guidance says that, despite the diversity and large numbers of bacteria associated with flower-vase water and potted plants, there is minimal or no evidence that plants in immunocompetent patient-care areas increase healthcare-associated infection. That finding concerns the patient-care settings reviewed; it does not establish zero risk for every person or household. CDC: Environmental Services | Infection Control

Why healthcare flower restrictions do not mean every home needs a ban
CDC guidance recommends efforts to exclude flowers and plants from areas caring for immunosuppressed patients, including settings such as hematopoietic stem-cell transplant units. This is a precaution for specialized patient-care environments, where people may be particularly vulnerable—not a blanket recommendation to keep bouquets out of homes.
The CDC also summarizes a study of a limited number of surgical patients that found no correlation between bacterial isolates in areas with flowers and postoperative infections. Evidence from healthcare environments cannot determine the risk for every individual, and the available sources do not quantify the chance of an ordinary household member becoming ill from a bouquet. How to handle flowers and vase water at home
- Wash your hands after arranging flowers, handling vase water, or cleaning the vase.
- Change the water regularly and wash the vase when refreshing an arrangement.
- Use flower food only for flower care. The CDC notes that vase additives can help extend flower life and minimize bacterial clouding; it does not establish that they prevent human illness.
In its patient-care precautions, the CDC specifies changing vase water every two days and cleaning and disinfecting vases after use. That interval is healthcare guidance, not a household medical rule. The guidance does not establish spraying flowers or adding household disinfectants as effective ways to prevent infection at home.
