To keep a mobile action game running smoothly for longer, choose a frame rate and graphics quality your phone can sustain, use its game or battery mode where appropriate, and play somewhere cool and shaded. Heat-related slowdowns can come from a demanding game, the surroundings, or device condition; no single setting prevents overheating on every phone.
Why a phone can slow down during a game
Games that keep the processor and graphics hardware busy generate heat. When a device needs to cool, it may reduce their speed, which can lower frame rates or make processing take longer. That response helps manage heat, but it can make performance less consistent and affect battery use. Android and Apple both describe thermal protections that can influence performance, though the response varies by device.

A phone feeling warm during a demanding game is not, by itself, a reliable diagnosis. Device designs, the game, operating system, battery condition and surrounding temperature all affect thermal behavior. There is no single temperature threshold that applies to every phone.

Choose a sustainable frame rate
If a high frame-rate setting comes with heat or slowdowns during a longer session, try the next lower option. A lower target may look less smooth, but it can reduce workload and help avoid a brief peak that the phone cannot maintain. The best setting depends on the device and game.

Reduce demanding visual settings
If the game offers graphics, effects, or render-quality controls, lower them one at a time and see whether play becomes more consistent. Reduced visual detail can ease the workload, but it is a tradeoff rather than a guaranteed fix. Apple’s developer guidance recommends tuning render resolution and asset quality to device capabilities.
Change one setting at a time and compare how the game behaves over a similar-length session. This makes it easier to identify which adjustment helps without needlessly sacrificing visual quality.

Use game and battery modes with the right expectations
Android Game Mode
Android Game Mode can offer a preference between performance and battery life. What it changes depends on the phone and whether the game implements support for the available configurations; it is not a universal cooling switch. Android’s Dynamic Performance Framework provides APIs for games to respond to device conditions and player preferences.
Apple Game Mode and Low Power Mode
Apple says Game Mode can reduce background activity and allocate more system resources to a foreground game. Developers can also adapt game quality when Low Power Mode is active. The effect depends on the operating system, device and game’s support, so these modes should not be treated as guaranteed temperature controls. Avoid trying to disable thermal safeguards or force maximum performance. Platform guidance focuses on managing workload and protecting the device, not bypassing its protections.
Change the playing conditions
- Move out of direct sunlight; a phone exposed to the sun can heat up even before the game adds its own workload.
- Avoid long gaming sessions in a hot environment when possible.
- If performance falls off, pause the game and let the device cool in a shaded, comfortable place before resuming.

Check battery health if the problem persists
If an iPhone continues to perform poorly when it is not in a hot environment, check Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging (the exact label can vary by software version and model). Apple’s Battery Health information can indicate whether chemical aging has reduced the battery’s ability to deliver peak power. Start with the game settings and surroundings because they are straightforward to change. If the issue is persistent and the phone is an iPhone, battery health is another factor to assess. Developers have additional tools for monitoring thermal state and tuning games, but those are not player-facing settings.
