1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe biggest cacheability gain for most WordPress sites is a correctly owned full-page cache for anonymous visitors. It stores reusable HTML so PHP, WordPress and the database do not rebuild the same public page for every request. Add browser cache headers for static files, bypass personalized or cookie-setting responses, purge only what changed, and verify the result from both logged-out and logged-in sessions.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
WordPress does not include a page cache by default. Before enabling anything, find out whether your host, CDN, reverse proxy, web server or an existing plugin already caches pages. Two independently managed page caches can produce stale content, confusing headers and difficult purges.

What page cacheability means
A page cache stores the generated HTML response for an eligible URL. On a later eligible request, the cache can return that HTML without starting the full WordPress stack, running PHP or querying the database. This is different from caching individual database objects, PHP bytecode or browser files.
Full-page HTML cache
A full-page cache targets complete responses such as a post, page, category archive or homepage. A WordPress caching plugin can write static cached pages, while a reverse proxy such as Varnish can serve a pre-built response before the request reaches PHP. This is normally the highest-impact cacheability improvement for anonymous traffic because it removes most application work from a cache hit.

Browser and intermediate caching
Browser caching applies mainly to static assets: images, CSS, JavaScript and fonts. Response headers such as Cache-Control, max-age, Expires and, where appropriate, entity tags (ETags) let a browser or intermediate cache reuse an unchanged file. Asset caching reduces repeat downloads, but it does not replace a server-side cache for the HTML document.
Object and opcode caches
Object caches retain frequently used data, and opcode caches retain compiled PHP instructions. They can reduce the cost of a cache miss, but neither one serves a complete public page by itself. Treat them as supporting layers rather than substitutes for a page cache.
Start with an inventory of every cache layer
Write down who generates, stores, serves and purges each response. Check the hosting control panel, web-server configuration, CDN settings and WordPress plugins before changing a setting.
- Host or platform: Look for a managed page cache, automatic purging, cache exclusions and a cache-status header.
- CDN or reverse proxy: Identify whether it caches HTML or only static assets, which paths bypass it, and how purges are requested.
- Web server: Check for Varnish, Nginx fastCGI caching, Apache rules or another response cache.
- WordPress plugins: Record which plugin writes page files, sets browser headers, minifies assets or exposes a purge button.
- Application behavior: Note plugins that set cookies, vary output by user, show carts or account data, or inject previews.
Choose one clearly owned full-page layer for anonymous requests. A plugin, host cache and CDN can coexist when their responsibilities are explicit, but do not activate overlapping page-cache features without a documented order and purge path.
Enable one full-page cache for anonymous visitors
On a site without an infrastructure-level cache, a WordPress page-cache plugin is the practical route. WordPress documentation lists W3 Total Cache, WP Super Cache and Cache Enabler as plugins that can write static cached pages. On infrastructure that supports it, a reverse proxy can serve the same kind of pre-built response outside WordPress.

Plugin-based setup
- Back up and record the current state. Note existing performance-plugin settings, web-server rules and header behavior so you can reverse a change.
- Install one page-cache plugin. In WordPress, open Plugins > Add New, search for the chosen page-cache plugin, install it and activate it. Do not enable a second plugin’s full-page cache at the same time.
- Turn on page caching for public visitors. The exact label varies, but look for a setting such as Page Cache, Enable caching or Static cache. Confirm that logged-in users are bypassed unless you have a deliberate private-cache design.
- Set the cache method that matches the server. A plugin may offer disk-based or enhanced methods. Use the method documented for your Apache or Nginx environment; an unsupported method can make pages appear uncached or return errors.
- Enable automatic purge hooks. Publishing or updating a post should purge that post and affected archives when the plugin supports it. Template, menu, widget and option changes may require a broader group purge.
- Save, then purge once. Clear old entries after activation so the first verification request builds a page under the new configuration.
Reverse-proxy or host-level setup
If your host or web team operates Varnish, Nginx fastCGI cache or a comparable reverse proxy, configure the page cache there rather than adding a second plugin cache. Define the public URL scope, logged-in bypass, cookie rules, query-string policy, stale-content behavior and purge endpoint. Keep WordPress’s cache-purge hooks connected to that layer so publishing does not leave old HTML in the proxy.
Set browser cache headers for static assets
Configure headers at the layer that serves the files. A typical policy gives versioned CSS, JavaScript, fonts and images a long freshness period, while files whose names do not change when their contents change need a shorter lifetime or reliable revalidation.
Cache-Control: max-age=...tells a browser how long it may reuse a response without rechecking.Expiresprovides an older date-based mechanism for clients that still use it.ETagor a suitableLast-Modifiedvalue lets a client validate whether a file changed.
Use asset versioning when deploying CSS or JavaScript: changing a version or filename makes the new file distinct, so a long-lived old asset does not block the release. Do not apply an aggressive asset lifetime to HTML, personalized responses or files that are replaced at the same URL without a purge plan.
Exclude responses that are not safely public
A public page cache must not serve one visitor’s private or request-specific output to another. Bypass or exclude the following categories:
- Logged-in users and administrator screens.
- Account, profile, membership and dashboard pages.
- Cart, checkout, order, payment and other transaction pages.
- Personalized pages that vary by user, location, experiment, subscription or entitlement.
- Preview, editor and staging URLs.
- Forms or endpoints that set or depend on a visitor cookie.
- Requests whose output changes with authorization headers or other private credentials.
Cookie-based bypass logic
WordPress.com documentation for Batcache describes skipping requests carrying cookies whose names begin with wp, wordpress or comment_author. It also states that a response that sets a cookie is not stored for that response. Your cache may use different cookie names, so inspect the actual Set-Cookie and Cookie headers generated by your plugins before writing rules.

URL and query-string exclusions
Exclude known dynamic paths such as account, cart, checkout, login, preview and API endpoints. Decide how tracking query strings are handled: ignoring harmless campaign parameters can improve hit rate, but parameters that change content must remain part of the cache key or bypass caching. Never remove a parameter from the cache key merely because it is common; first establish that it cannot alter the response.
Comment and form behavior
Comment authors, logged-in users and form participants may receive cookies or personalized notices. Test those flows separately from a normal anonymous page view. If a plugin injects a user-specific fragment into an otherwise public page, either exclude the page or use a fragment strategy that is explicitly supported by the cache layer.
Choose a cache lifetime that matches your publishing process
Time to live (TTL) is a maximum freshness window, not a promise that an entry will remain stored for that entire period. WordPress.com’s Batcache documentation shows max_age => 86400, or 86,400 seconds (one day), as a configurable example and notes that a cached copy can be dropped sooner. That value is not a universal recommendation.
Set TTL by answering two questions:
- How stale may this URL safely be? A rarely changing documentation page can tolerate a longer lifetime than a breaking-news homepage or inventory page.
- How quickly can you invalidate it? Reliable automatic or selective purging allows a longer nominal TTL without forcing visitors to wait for expiration.
Keep HTML TTLs conservative when your purge hooks are incomplete. Give versioned static assets longer lifetimes only after confirming that deployment changes their URL or that you can purge them reliably.

Purge selectively after content and code changes
When content changes, clear the affected URL and any cache groups whose rendered links or excerpts changed. Publishing a post may require purging the post, homepage, category archive, tag archive, feed and pagination entries that display it. A template or global navigation change can affect many URLs and may justify a full purge.

The WordPress Hosting Handbook recommends selective expiration when available because purging everything makes WordPress regenerate every page. Use the narrowest purge that produces correct output, then widen it when a shared component changed.
Typical purge triggers
- New or edited post: Purge the post and archives that list it.
- Menu, widget or theme change: Purge all pages that render the shared component.
- CSS or JavaScript deployment: Prefer a new asset version or filename; purge only if the URL stays the same.
- Plugin setting or shortcode change: Purge every content type that can render the changed output.
- Emergency correction: Purge the specific URL immediately, then check upstream CDN or proxy layers as well.
Verify whether a page is actually cached
Test from outside WordPress while logged out, then repeat while logged in. Cookies can deliberately change the result, so one session cannot prove that the public page is cacheable.
Browser developer tools
- Open the site in a private window with no WordPress login.
- Open developer tools and select the Network panel.
- Load the target URL with the document request visible.
- Inspect response headers for a cache-status indicator such as
HIT,MISS,BYPASSor an equivalent header from your host, proxy or plugin. - Check
Cache-Control,Age,ETag,ExpiresandSet-Cookie. A public HTML response that sets a visitor cookie generally should not be stored as a shared page. - Reload or request the page again after the first miss. A repeat request should show the cache layer’s hit behavior if the URL and session are eligible.
Command-line header check
WordPress.com documentation demonstrates a header-only GET request using:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
curl -s -D - -o /dev/null https://yourgroovydomain.com/
Replace the example hostname with your own site. The command prints response headers without downloading the body. Run it from a logged-out context, repeat after a short interval, and compare the cache-status, age and cookie headers. To test a logged-in path, use a session that contains the appropriate cookies and do not treat its bypass result as a failure.
WordPress Site Health
In the dashboard, open Tools > Site Health > Status. WordPress includes page-cache header checks that look for evidence of a page cache and suitable response behavior. Treat Site Health as a diagnostic signal, then confirm the exact headers at the URL your visitors use; a CDN or host may sit in front of WordPress and alter the final response.
Best Value
Diagnose a cache that appears not to work
Every request is a MISS
- Check that page caching is enabled for anonymous traffic and that the URL is not excluded by path, query string or cookie.
- Look for a
Set-Cookieheader generated by a plugin, theme or security layer; many caches bypass responses that set cookies. - Confirm that another cache layer is not intercepting the request and that the selected storage method is writable and supported by the server.
- Request the canonical URL, including the correct HTTPS scheme, hostname, trailing-slash policy and redirect target. Different variants are different cache keys.
Visitors see stale HTML
- Purge the affected URL at every active layer, including the host, reverse proxy and CDN.
- Check whether publishing hooks purge only the post and not the homepage or archive that displays it.
- Look for a long browser or intermediate TTL on unchanged HTML. A server purge cannot erase a copy already held by a browser unless the response is revalidated or the URL changes.
- Verify that logged-in and logged-out tests are not being compared; their cookies can intentionally produce different output.
Private data appears in a public response
Disable the page cache for the affected path immediately, purge all copies, and inspect the response for cookies, authorization-dependent output and personalization plugins. Add an explicit path or cookie bypass before re-enabling caching. Do not attempt to solve a privacy leak by merely shortening the TTL.
CSS or JavaScript changes are missing
Check the asset URL and its version. If the filename or query-based version did not change, purge the asset at the serving layer or deploy it under a new version. Then clear any page cache that contains the old HTML reference.

| WordPress page-cache plugin | Static HTML files for eligible pages | WordPress administrator and hosting environment | Logged-in bypass, cookie detection, exclusions, automatic and selective purge, writable storage | Sites that need a dashboard-managed implementation |
| Reverse proxy or host page cache | HTML responses before PHP and WordPress run | Host or web-server operator | Cookie and authorization rules, path and query policy, purge hooks, cache-status headers | Sites whose infrastructure already provides server-side caching |
| CDN HTML cache | Responses at distributed edge locations | CDN configuration and deployment process | Edge bypass rules, purge scope, cache key, stale behavior and origin headers | Sites serving visitors across multiple regions |
| Browser asset cache | Images, CSS, JavaScript and fonts | Web server, CDN or application headers | Cache-Control, Expires, ETags, versioned filenames and asset invalidation |
Reducing repeat downloads; not a replacement for HTML caching |
| Object or opcode cache | Database objects or compiled PHP instructions | Host and application configuration | Memory availability, eviction behavior and compatibility with plugins | Reducing the cost of requests that still reach WordPress |
For most sites, the decision is not which layer sounds fastest; it is which layer has correct bypass rules, a dependable purge mechanism and an owner who can diagnose it. A simpler cache that you can verify is safer than several opaque layers.
Use this deployment checklist
- Inventory host, CDN, proxy, web-server and plugin caches.
- Select one owner for full-page caching of anonymous traffic.
- Confirm logged-in, account, cart, checkout, preview and personalized paths bypass shared caching.
- Inspect cookie-setting behavior and add exclusions for responses that cannot be public.
- Set browser headers for static assets and version files that change at the same URL.
- Define automatic purge hooks for publishing and a documented manual purge path.
- Prefer selective invalidation when only a URL or cache group changed.
- Test a canonical URL while logged out, repeat it, and inspect response headers.
- Repeat the test while logged in and confirm that the intentional bypass does not look like a public cache hit.
- Run the WordPress Site Health page-cache check and investigate discrepancies with external headers.
Operational habits that keep cacheability healthy
Review cache headers after changing themes, forms, membership features, analytics, consent tools or ecommerce plugins. These changes often introduce cookies or personalized fragments that invalidate assumptions made when the cache was first configured.
Keep a short record of cache ownership, excluded paths, cookie patterns, TTLs and purge commands. When an incident occurs, you can identify whether stale content came from WordPress, the origin web server, an edge cache or a browser instead of repeatedly clearing every layer.
Finally, treat cache correctness as more important than a high hit count. A cache hit that serves the wrong user, hides a newly published correction or breaks a transaction is a defect. The useful target is reusable HTML for genuinely public requests, with predictable bypasses and an observable invalidation process.
