None reproduces every part of Nextcloud. The right replacement depends on whether you value groupware, sync performance, low server overhead, policy controls, or direct storage access.
This guide compares those trade-offs for home labs, small businesses, and teams planning a self-hosted deployment in 2026.

For a self-hosted deployment, an Antihost VPS offers Linux hosting with full root access and NVMe storage, with plans from 1 to 16 vCPUs and 2 to 64 GB RAM.
What a Nextcloud replacement has to match
Nextcloud describes itself as “the most deployed self-hosted file sync and content collaboration platform” and says it offers “the widest range of add-on capabilities and integrations in the industry.” That breadth is the baseline: a credible replacement must be judged on file synchronization and sharing, collaboration features, client support, integrations, administration, deployment complexity, and ongoing cost.

ownCloud Infinite Scale and OpenCloud: the lightest modern deployment
Infinite Scale (also presented as OpenCloud in current discussions) is the clearest choice when your priority is a small operational footprint. The service is written in Go and distributed as a single static binary under the Apache-2.0 license. It needs neither PHP nor a relational database, removing two common moving parts from a traditional self-hosted cloud stack.
Why choose it
- Fewer runtime components mean fewer upgrades and less configuration than a PHP-and-database deployment.
- A static binary is convenient on a small virtual machine, appliance, or other constrained host.
- Spaces provide a structure for shared projects without requiring the full breadth of a large app marketplace.
What you give up
The lean architecture is also the boundary of the product. If your users expect a broad catalog of calendar, contacts, communication, office, and automation add-ons, a smaller platform will not be a one-for-one replacement. Treat Infinite Scale/OpenCloud as a focused file collaboration service and verify that the clients and integrations your team actually uses are available before migrating.
Seafile: fastest fit for large libraries
Seafile uses block-level synchronization, so changes can be transferred in pieces rather than resending an entire large file. Descriptions of the platform emphasize that it remains fast and reliable with very large libraries and many small files. That makes it the strongest shortlist candidate when raw sync performance matters more than an integrated groupware suite.
When Seafile is the better choice
- Design teams, media collections, code repositories, or archives where libraries are large.
- Teams that frequently edit large files and want efficient incremental transfers.
- Administrators who prefer a dedicated file platform instead of a broad personal-cloud app catalog.
Important limitations
Seafile does not bundle calendars, contacts, or an office suite. You can run separate tools for those functions, but that creates additional identity, backup, and maintenance work. Plan the surrounding services before treating Seafile as a complete collaboration replacement.
Community and Professional editions
The Community Edition is open source and free. The Professional edition is free for up to three users and becomes paid beyond that threshold. Confirm current licensing and support terms for your user count before deployment, particularly if a small pilot will grow into a larger team.

Syncthing: peer-to-peer replication instead of a cloud portal
Syncthing synchronizes selected folders directly between devices over encrypted connections. It does not require a central server and does not require a web UI. The result is a different architecture from Nextcloud: every participating device can exchange data, and there is no single cloud account that automatically presents all files in a browser.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhere Syncthing excels
- Mirroring a workstation to a home server or another workstation.
- Keeping a laptop and desktop synchronized without routing files through a hosted service.
- Creating a private replication path for backups, provided you also maintain versioned or offline backup copies.
- Running a low-power node, such as a Raspberry Pi, as one endpoint in a folder-replication design.
Why it is not a drop-in Nextcloud replacement
Syncthing is a synchronization engine, not a groupware suite. It does not provide the same central web collaboration model, shared online editing environment, calendar and contact layer, or organization-wide file portal. Users need access to the synchronized folders on their own devices, and permissions are designed around device and folder relationships rather than a team policy hierarchy.
Choose it when direct replication is the goal. Choose a server-centric platform when people need browser access, shared links, centralized administration, or policy-driven workspaces.
Pydio Cells: granular permissions and SSO for teams
Pydio Cells is a Go-based document-sharing platform aimed at teams. Its differentiator is governance: fine-grained access control, workflows, and single sign-on are central to the product’s positioning. It is the most suitable option in this shortlist when administrators must express detailed policy rules rather than simply share folders with a few broad roles.
Use Pydio Cells when policy is the requirement
- Different departments need distinct access to the same project structure.
- External collaborators require controlled sharing without exposing an entire drive.
- Identity should be tied to an existing single sign-on provider.
- Document workflows and approval-oriented processes matter as much as file transport.
Edition choice
The Home edition is available under AGPLv3 at no license cost. Enterprise is paid and is the tier to evaluate when you need commercial features or support. Price the complete deployment, including identity integration and operational support, rather than comparing license fees alone.

FileRun: a portal for the storage you already own
FileRun is designed as self-hosted file-sync and sharing software that works with an organization’s existing storage. Its product description emphasizes that it uses the systems you already have, carries your organization’s name, and exposes a complete API. That storage model can simplify migrations when data already lives on a local filesystem, NAS, or established server hierarchy.
Why existing-folder access matters
Moving data into a new object-style or managed library store can require a full migration, new backup jobs, and a revised permission model. A portal that can work against existing folders may let you introduce browser access and synchronization while preserving the underlying storage layout. You still need to audit permissions carefully: filesystem permissions, application permissions, and link-sharing rules must not contradict one another.
Best fit and boundaries
FileRun suits organizations seeking a conventional file portal with direct access to current storage and an API for integration. It is less appropriate if your primary requirement is a large ecosystem of groupware applications or peer-to-peer replication between devices.
Comparison by the decision that matters
Need a complete collaboration suite?
Start with the capabilities your users cannot lose. Nextcloud’s advantage is breadth, so replacing it with a file-only service means calendars, contacts, online office editing, chat, or workflow functions may need separate products. Pydio Cells adds policy-oriented workflows and SSO, but it is still a focused document platform. Seafile and FileRun concentrate on files. Syncthing concentrates on replication. Infinite Scale/OpenCloud favors a lean file service over a broad add-on catalog.
Need the fastest handling of large files?
Choose Seafile first. Its block-level synchronization is specifically suited to large libraries and many small files. Syncthing can also move data efficiently between peers, but it solves a different problem: direct replication rather than a centrally managed cloud workspace. Do not infer a universal benchmark from architecture alone; test your own network, storage, and client mix.
Need the smallest server footprint?
Infinite Scale/OpenCloud is the clearest fit because it is a single static Go binary with no PHP or relational database. Syncthing can be even simpler when you need only device replication and no central portal. A full team portal, regardless of product, still needs storage capacity, backups, authentication, and monitoring.
Need SSO and detailed permissions?
Pydio Cells is the direct recommendation. Its fine-grained access controls and SSO focus make it more suitable than a basic shared-folder service for organizations with formal policy requirements.

Need to keep an existing folder tree?
Evaluate FileRun first. Its stated design is to use storage an organization already has, reducing the need to reorganize data before users can access it through a web interface.

License cost is only one part of self-hosting. Add the server or NAS, disks, electricity, off-site backup, monitoring, support, and the time required for upgrades. Community or free editions remove a subscription line but do not remove those operating responsibilities.
What can run on a Raspberry Pi?
Syncthing is the most natural Raspberry Pi candidate in this list because it can operate as a lightweight peer in a folder-replication setup and does not require a central web service. A Pi can also be useful as a secondary copy or low-power synchronization node, but it should not be treated as your only backup: device failure, theft, malware, or accidental deletion can propagate to every synchronized peer.
For a full multi-user portal, evaluate storage throughput, memory, database or service requirements, encryption, and backup software before choosing a Pi. Infinite Scale/OpenCloud’s single-binary architecture may reduce software overhead, yet the practical limit will still be the Pi’s storage and network performance. Test with representative files and concurrent users rather than relying on a hardware label.

Migration plan from Nextcloud
- Inventory what you actually use. Record shared folders, public links, desktop and mobile clients, online editing, calendars, contacts, chat, external storage, workflows, and identity integrations. Separate must-have functions from conveniences.
- Choose the replacement architecture. Select a central portal for browser collaboration, peer-to-peer replication for device mirroring, a block-sync platform for large libraries, or a policy-focused platform for SSO and granular permissions.
- Build a parallel pilot. Deploy the candidate without changing the production instance. Create representative accounts, groups, shared folders, external links, and large-file tests.
- Test synchronization failure modes. Disconnect a client, edit the same file on two devices, interrupt a transfer, and restore a deleted file. Verify conflict handling, resume behavior, and audit visibility.
- Validate identity and permissions. Test SSO, group membership changes, offboarding, link expiration, and access from unmanaged devices. Confirm that filesystem permissions and application rules produce the intended result.
- Plan data movement and rollback. Keep the original data and a verified backup until users have completed a documented acceptance test. Migrate in batches so a problem affects a limited set of accounts.
- Rebuild surrounding services. If you leave a platform with built-in calendars, contacts, office editing, or chat, provide replacements and communicate where users will find those functions.
- Cut over deliberately. Freeze writes during the final copy, verify checksums or file counts, switch DNS or bookmarks, and monitor errors and storage growth. Keep a rollback window instead of deleting the old instance immediately.
Operational pitfalls to avoid
- Calling synchronization a backup. Replication can copy corruption, ransomware, or accidental deletion. Maintain versioned, offline, or off-site backups.
- Ignoring client coverage. Confirm desktop and mobile support for every operating system your users carry before committing to a migration.
- Underestimating missing groupware. File-only products may require separate calendars, contacts, office editing, or chat, each with its own updates and access controls.
- Assuming a low dependency count means zero administration. You still need TLS, account lifecycle management, updates, logs, capacity alerts, and disaster recovery.
- Mixing permission models without testing. Existing filesystem ACLs, application roles, shared links, and SSO groups must be tested together, especially when a portal exposes legacy folders.
- Using a small single-board computer as the only server. A Raspberry Pi can be a useful node, but important data needs resilient storage and an independent backup target.
