How to Improve Nighttime Driving Vision—and Know When to Stop Driving

Use a current driving prescription and clean vehicle glass, but seek an eye exam for worsening night vision or glare. If you cannot see hazards or recover from glare, avoid night driving until assessed.

Start with a current driving prescription, clean vehicle glass and headlights, and an eye exam if night vision or glare is getting worse. If you cannot reliably see hazards or recover from headlight glare, avoid night driving until you have been assessed. That restriction can be limited to nighttime; it does not automatically mean you must stop driving altogether.

What you can safely do to improve visibility

Practical adjustments can remove avoidable obstacles to seeing, but they do not treat cataracts or another eye condition. Try the steps that apply while arranging an eye assessment if symptoms are new, worsening or persistent.

  • Wear the prescription intended for driving. Use your current eyeglasses or contact lenses; do not rely on an old pair if the current one is lost or broken.
  • Do not wear sunglasses or tinted lenses at night. They reduce the light reaching your eyes. Yellow lenses and products marketed as “night-driving glasses” should not be treated as a cure for poor night vision.
  • Clean the windshield, mirrors and headlights. Dirt and haze can add to visibility problems. Have headlight aim checked during vehicle inspection; misdirected beams can make it harder to see and can affect other drivers.
  • Adjust your position and manage glare. Sit high enough to see the road at least 10 feet ahead, as NHTSA advises. When facing oncoming headlights, looking toward the lower-right side of the road may reduce discomfort. A glare-filtering rearview mirror can help with light from behind if your vehicle has one.
  • Choose easier conditions only if you can still drive safely. While seeking assessment, consider daylight, familiar routes, lower speeds, lighter traffic and good weather. These limits do not prove that driving is safe in the conditions you continue to use.

NHTSA’s older-driver guidance recommends these visibility and glare-management measures. If symptoms persist despite a current prescription and clean glass, arrange an eye exam rather than trying a stronger consumer lens.

When nighttime vision problems need an eye exam

Contact an eye-care professional about new or worsening blur, dimness, trouble seeing at night, halos, unusually strong light sensitivity or headlight glare, faded or yellowed colors, double or ghost images, or frequent prescription changes. Trouble seeing lane lines, signs, pavement markings, pedestrians or other vehicles—especially at dusk or night—is also a warning sign NHTSA says should be addressed.

Cataracts are one possible cause, not a diagnosis to make from symptoms alone. They can cause reduced night vision, glare or light sensitivity, halos, faded colors and sometimes double vision. An eye-care professional can check your prescription and assess for cataracts or other conditions. See the National Eye Institute’s cataract overview and NHTSA’s guidance on driving with cataracts.

If cataracts interfere with daily activities such as driving, a clinician may discuss surgery. The American Academy of Ophthalmology likewise describes surgery as a consideration when cataracts interfere with ordinary tasks. Symptoms alone do not establish that surgery is needed; that decision belongs in a conversation with your eye-care professional.

When to stop driving at night

Avoid night and other low-light driving, and arrange another ride, if you cannot reliably see lane markings, signs, pedestrians or hazards, are substantially impaired by glare, or have difficulty recovering after a bright light. NHTSA clinician guidance specifically advises avoiding night and other low-light driving when a person needs increased illumination or has trouble with glare recovery. You can revisit the restriction after assessment; a symptom does not by itself prove permanent inability to drive.

In the meantime, do not assume that a familiar route or a slower speed makes an unsafe trip safe. Ask someone else to drive, use locally available transportation, or postpone the trip until conditions are suitable and your vision has been assessed.

When to reconsider driving more broadly

Look at concrete driving events and functioning, not age alone. A broader conversation with an eye-care professional, clinician or licensing authority is warranted when vision problems coincide with near misses or crashes, getting lost on familiar routes, repeated moving violations, a police warning, difficulty reacting, or credible concern from family or clinicians.

NHTSA states: “Decisions about your ability to drive should never be based on age alone.” Its older-driver information also emphasizes planning for safety and mobility. A clinician can assess health factors; a driver rehabilitation specialist may provide an on-road evaluation where available and permitted. Licensing rules and visual requirements vary by jurisdiction, so ask the relevant authority about local requirements.

NHTSA’s Clinician’s Guide to Assessing and Counseling Older Drivers, 3rd edition gives examples for clinical referral: it describes referral for an on-road assessment by a driver rehabilitation specialist when best-corrected far visual acuity is below 20/70, and recommends that a person below 20/100 not drive unless safe ability is demonstrated in an on-road assessment, where available and permitted. These are clinician recommendations in the guide—not a home test or universal legal thresholds. Visual-field requirements and licensing rules differ by location.

If driving is reduced or stopped, plan replacement transportation around essential trips and valued activities. Depending on local availability, that might mean rides from family or friends, public transit or other community transport. The aim is to protect safety without losing access to errands, appointments and social connection unnecessarily.
