To improve a mobile game’s graphics without AI upscaling, adjust the game’s own resolution, image-quality, texture, shadow, and effects settings—then test whether your phone can sustain them without stuttering or overheating. A higher refresh-rate screen or a general game mode may help performance, but neither automatically adds image detail.
Start with the game’s graphics settings
Open the game’s settings and look for options such as Graphics, Display, Video, or Performance. The exact controls vary by game and device; there is no universal setting recipe. Change one option at a time so you can tell what actually improves the picture.

- Try the image-quality or resolution setting. If the game offers Low, Medium, High, or a resolution scale, move up one step and compare fine details and edges during play.
- Raise detail options selectively. Test texture quality, model detail, shadows, and effects separately. Texture or model detail can make surfaces and objects look richer; shadows and effects may change the scene’s appearance but can also increase the rendering load.
- Choose a suitable frame-rate limit. A higher target can make motion feel smoother, but it is not the same as increasing resolution or detail. If the game becomes uneven, try a lower supported target.
- Play a representative session. Compare image detail, consistency of frame timing, performance later in the session, and battery or heat. Keep the highest-quality combination that remains stable for the way you play.
These are trade-offs, not guaranteed upgrades: the game may not expose every setting, and the phone may not sustain its highest options. Apple’s developer guidance describes hitching as a frame taking too long to render and missing its intended display time, and recommends evaluating performance and image-quality settings together: Apple’s graphics performance and settings guidance.

A phone’s display refresh rate describes how often its screen can update; it does not determine the resolution at which a game renders. A 90 Hz or 120 Hz panel cannot by itself make a game draw more detailed images or run at that frame rate. The game and device must support the target, and the game must deliver frames consistently.

Android Developers notes that displays may support 60, 90, or 120 Hz while games commonly target 30 or 60 frames per second. When the screen’s rate exceeds the game’s target, the higher panel rate may use more power without making that game render more frames. Check your phone’s display refresh setting and the game’s frame-rate option, but judge the result in the game rather than assuming the largest number is best: Android’s power-efficiency guidance for games.
Use game modes for performance, not sharper graphics
Android
Some Android devices provide a game mode or gaming utility. Its behavior depends on the manufacturer and device; Android’s documented Game Mode interventions can include changes such as backbuffer resizing or frame-rate throttling. These are device-specific performance interventions, not a general way to unlock a game’s highest graphics preset or add detail: Android Game Mode interventions.

Apple says Game Mode prioritizes a game for smoother, more consistent frame rates and improved responsiveness on supported iPhone and iPad models (as well as Mac). Treat it as a performance and input-response feature, not an image-sharpness enhancer: Apple Support: Use Game Mode.

If graphics or performance worsen during a long session
If a game starts smoothly but becomes less consistent after prolonged play, heat may be a factor. Reduce avoidable heat, then retest under similar conditions before changing several graphics options at once. A phone cooler is relevant only if heat is limiting sustained performance; it cannot add rendering detail, increase the phone’s underlying hardware capability, or unlock controls the game does not offer.

For example, ASUS describes its AeroActive Cooler 6 as an external cooler for the ROG Phone 6 series and says it lowers surface temperature near the CPU to help prevent in-game lag. That is the manufacturer’s claim, not independent comparative testing. Check compatibility with your exact phone before considering an external phone gaming cooler.
What to compare when choosing a setting
When the game offers multiple modes, compare them in the same scene or type of gameplay rather than relying on a menu label alone.

- Image detail: Are textures, edges, models, shadows, or effects visibly better?
- Frame consistency: Does motion remain steady, or do frames hitch?
- Sustained behavior: Does the setting still perform acceptably later in a normal-length session?
- Battery and heat: Is the visual change worth the additional power use or warmth?
The best choice depends on the game and phone, as well as whether you prefer richer detail or steadier motion. If an option makes the picture look better in a still scene but causes distracting hitches during play, it may not be the better overall setting.

- Turning on a high refresh rate alone: This can affect screen updates and motion, but does not add resolution or detail to the game’s rendered image.
- Enabling a general game mode: Its effects vary by platform and device; it may target responsiveness or performance rather than sharpness.
- Using a controller: It may improve comfort or control, but does not change rendering.
- Cleaning the screen or adding a screen protector: These can affect visibility or protection, not the detail the game renders.
Avoid treating hidden developer settings, file edits, or third-party unlockers as universal fixes. Whether a specific game supports such changes is title- and device-dependent, and unsupported modifications are not a reliable substitute for its built-in graphics controls.
