What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
First find out where the problem occurs: an increasing dropped-frames counter in OBS points to the broadcaster’s connection to the streaming service; buffering with no OBS drops points more toward viewer networks or devices, platform delivery, or the stream’s settings. Compare the stream on another device and network before changing equipment. Then adjust only the part of the chain the evidence implicates.
Identify which part of the stream is failing
A live stream travels through several stages: the broadcaster’s computer and encoder, the internet connection to the platform, the platform’s processing and distribution, the viewer’s ISP and home network, and the viewer’s device and player. Similar symptoms can come from different stages, so use comparisons before making changes.

- OBS shows dropped frames or an unstable connection: investigate the broadcaster’s upload connection and configured bitrate.
- OBS shows no dropped frames, but viewers report buffering: compare viewer locations, networks and devices; then consider platform transcoding and stream settings.
- The picture is blurry or blocky: check bitrate alongside resolution, frame rate, codec, keyframe interval, motion in the content and whether the upload connection can sustain the settings.
- Only one viewer has a problem: start with that viewer’s player, device and network rather than assuming the broadcast itself is faulty.
YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but delivery and playback can still vary by audience connection and device. A clean broadcaster-side connection does not guarantee smooth playback for every viewer.

Fix dropped frames and unstable ingest in OBS
OBS explains that it drops frames when its connection to the streaming service is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. As OBS puts it, “OBS opts to drop the frames to avoid buffering and keep your stream playing.” An increasing dropped-frames count therefore calls for a connection and bitrate check before assuming the computer’s encoder is at fault.

- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
- Check OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection indicator. Note whether dropped frames increase during the problem. If they do, focus on the path from the broadcaster to the streaming service.
- Measure upload capacity under realistic conditions. Test while the network is being used as it will be during the broadcast. A speed-test result is a snapshot, not a guarantee of stable throughput throughout a stream.
- Choose a sustainable bitrate within the platform’s current limits. OBS’s connection troubleshooting suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a promise or a universal target. Leave room for shared network traffic, variation in upload performance and the platform’s limits. Use the relevant platform’s current encoder guidance; YouTube advises choosing a quality that can stream reliably on the connection.
- Test another ingest server, if the platform offers one. A different server can help distinguish a route or ingest issue from a general encoder problem.
- Check possible software interference. Temporarily test whether a VPN, firewall or security application, or bundled network software is disrupting the connection. Change security settings cautiously and restore protections after testing.
- Lower bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the current setting. This can reduce dropped frames, but may also reduce picture detail. OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower the chance of frame drops during congestion; OBS cautions that it does not repair the underlying connection problem.
Official guidance: OBS Help and OBS connection troubleshooting.
When viewers buffer but OBS reports no dropped frames
First establish whether the reports share a pattern. Ask whether buffering affects all viewers, a particular region, one device type, or one network. If the broadcaster’s connection is clean but viewers in one home or on one device struggle, their playback path is a more likely place to investigate than the encoder.

For those looking to fine-tune image parameters or enhance sound quality, EMEETLINK software is available for advanced customization. Both simplicity and advanced needs can be met effortlessly.
- Compare another stream on the same device and network. If other streams also buffer, investigate the viewer’s network, device or player. If only this broadcast has trouble, its settings or the platform’s delivery of it may be involved.
- Compare another device or network. A second phone, computer, TV or connection can reveal whether the issue follows the viewer’s original setup or the stream.
- Use Auto quality when available. It lets the player adapt quality to network conditions. Twitch says, “The Auto setting automatically adjusts your video quality based on your current network conditions.” Manually forcing 1080p60 or another high setting may perform worse on an inconsistent connection.
- Consider audience reach when setting the stream quality. Lowering bitrate, resolution or frame rate can make playback more accessible on constrained connections, at a potential cost to visual quality. The benefit also depends on whether the platform supplies transcoded alternatives.
For Twitch-specific playback checks, see Twitch playback troubleshooting. OBS also outlines viewer-side causes and checks in its stream buffering guidance.
Improve a blurry or blocky picture without guessing
Raising bitrate alone is not a reliable fix. More bitrate can help preserve detail only if the connection can sustain it and the platform supports the chosen format. Check the settings as a set and test using footage that resembles the real broadcast.

- Full HD 1080p video calling and recording at 30 fps. You'll make a strong impression with this PC webcam that features crisp, clearly detailed, and vibrantly colored video
- Resolution and frame rate: Higher resolution or frame rate can demand more bitrate and encoder capacity. Choose a combination appropriate to the content, computer and stable upload available.
- Bitrate: Keep it within platform limits and below what the connection can reliably sustain. Congestion or bitrate spikes can undermine smooth delivery.
- Codec and keyframe interval: Confirm they match the platform’s current requirements and recommendations. Do not treat one platform’s setting as universal: Twitch’s broadcasting guidance documents a 2-second keyframe interval, which is platform-specific.
- Motion and audio in tests: A static screen may not reveal problems that appear during fast movement or a busy scene. YouTube recommends testing with motion and audio similar to the actual show.
For YouTube, consult its current encoder settings and live-stream recommendations. For another platform, use that platform’s own guidance rather than copying values blindly.
Balance low latency against playback stability
Lower latency gives viewers a more immediate feed, useful when interaction depends on quick responses. The trade-off is less read-ahead buffer: YouTube warns that low-latency streams may experience more playback buffering. Select a latency mode for the event’s needs and test it with representative motion, audio and network conditions before going live.

YouTube’s latency guidance says the 4K/2160 option to improve for low latency is unavailable and those streams use normal latency. Platform choices can change, so check the current YouTube latency guidance when configuring a stream.
Check viewer Wi-Fi, network load and playback devices
If the problem appears limited to a viewer’s setup, test the connection before recommending new equipment. Where supported, compare playback over wired Ethernet. A direct connection can help identify Wi-Fi instability, but it will not fix encoder errors or an ISP or platform problem. A device without an Ethernet port may need a compatible adapter.

- Try playback near the router, then compare with the usual viewing location; distance, walls and interference can affect Wi-Fi.
- Check whether other devices are using substantial bandwidth during playback.
- Restart the player or device and check for available software or firmware updates.
- If using Ethernet, try another cable to rule out a cable fault.
- Do not replace a router by default: first establish whether wired playback or a second network changes the result.

Use a repeatable pre-stream test
A brief test cannot guarantee a trouble-free event, but it can expose a mismatch between stream settings and actual conditions. Test the full setup as it will be used, including the real content, connection and platform.
- Confirm the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, keyframe interval and bitrate against the platform’s current recommendations.
- Run a private or otherwise suitable test stream, if the platform’s tools allow it, using motion and audio like the planned broadcast.
- Watch OBS’s connection status and dropped-frame counter while the test runs; also check the platform’s stream-health indicators where available.
- Check playback from a second device or network, and use Auto quality where offered.
- If the test fails, change one relevant setting at a time and repeat it. Record the result so you can distinguish a real improvement from a change in network conditions.
