Best Gyre Alternative for Looping NAS Videos on YouTube Live

For a do-it-yourself setup, OBS Studio is the best-supported alternative: run OBS on a computer that can access your NAS, loop a video or playlist, and send the broadcast to a YouTube live event. The computer must remain on while it encodes. If you want the stream hosted in the cloud instead, StreamNeo is the first service to consider: upload videos, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.

First decide whether you want local playback or a YouTube broadcast

Looping files from a NAS in a media player is not the same as broadcasting them as a YouTube Live stream. For a public live broadcast, an encoder has to send video to a configured YouTube event. YouTube’s streaming guidance covers that encoder-to-event setup.

This guide assumes your NAS contains video files you have permission to stream, and that you want those files to play continuously on YouTube Live. If you only want to watch the files at home, a media server such as Jellyfin may be a better fit than an encoder and public broadcast.

Options for looping NAS videos on YouTube Live

Option What it does Best fit Main limitation
StreamNeo Cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, with looping and playlists. You want the stream to continue without an always-on home computer. It plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.
OBS Studio with NAS media Uses a local computer as the encoder; OBS can loop one file or a VLC playlist. You want to control the broadcast locally and have a computer that can read the NAS. The computer, NAS connection, and internet connection need to remain available for the broadcast.
Gyre Gyre describes uploading videos to its storage, arranging a playlist, scheduling a stream, and looping the playlist. You want a hosted service rather than a home encoder and prefer Gyre’s workflow. Its features and offer details are vendor claims and may change; the available information does not establish comparative uptime, quality, or total cost.
Jellyfin Self-hosted media library and live-TV functionality, including supported tuner inputs. You want to organize and play a local library or use supported live-TV inputs. The documentation does not establish a direct workflow for broadcasting a NAS playlist continuously to YouTube Live.
Youtarr with a media server Downloads selected YouTube playlist items and synchronizes playlists to Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby; documents an M3U fallback. You want to mirror playlist items into a local media library. It is not documented as an encoder that publishes a continuous YouTube Live stream.

For a locally hosted broadcast, OBS is the clearest documented choice. Gyre is the closest cloud-hosted workflow among these options; StreamNeo is another cloud option, with a different workflow based on uploading videos and adding a YouTube stream key. Jellyfin and Youtarr address library management or playback rather than serving as documented one-click YouTube Live replacements.

Loop a NAS video or playlist with OBS

OBS documents support for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It does not establish compatibility with a particular NAS model or share protocol, so first make sure the computer running OBS can open the media files reliably. See the OBS system requirements; resource needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.

Before you start

  • Confirm the NAS share is mounted or otherwise accessible from the computer running OBS, and test that the files play from that computer.
  • Install OBS Studio. If you plan to use its VLC Video source, install VLC as well; OBS says the VLC source requires VLC, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  • Enable live streaming for your YouTube channel and create or configure the live event. YouTube says the channel must be verified and live streaming enabled; first-time activation may take at least 24 hours after you request it. Check YouTube’s current instructions for the event setup and requirements.
  • Use only media you own or have permission to broadcast. A loop does not grant rights to music, video, or other material in the files. YouTube’s platform rules and copyright processes still apply.

For one repeating video

  1. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene.
  2. Choose the video file from the NAS share that is accessible to the OBS computer.
  3. Enable the source’s Loop option and confirm the video plays and restarts as expected.

For an ordered playlist

  1. In OBS, add a VLC Video source. If it is missing, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC).
  2. Add the NAS media paths in the order you want them played.
  3. Leave Loop Playlist enabled. OBS documents this setting as controlling whether the source restarts after it has run out of media files; it is enabled by default.
  4. Play the source and check that each item loads and that playback returns to the beginning of the list.

See OBS’s Media Sources documentation for the source properties. It describes the loop controls, but does not certify a particular NAS setup or long-running broadcast.

Send OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Set up a YouTube live event and obtain its stream key using YouTube’s current live control-room instructions.
  2. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and configure the event’s stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not share it or include it in a public recording.
  3. Choose an encoder and output settings that your computer and internet connection can sustain. There is no single bitrate or resolution established here for every system; follow the current YouTube guidance shown for your event and test the stream before relying on it.
  4. Start streaming in OBS, then verify the preview and live status in YouTube Studio. Keep the computer awake, connected to the NAS and internet, and OBS running while the broadcast is meant to continue.

Keep the playlist and broadcast dependable

  • Use stable file paths: if a NAS share disconnects or a file moves, OBS may no longer be able to read the playlist item. Confirm the mount and paths before starting.
  • Check the whole sequence: a playlist can begin successfully while a later file fails. Let the source progress through every item before treating it as ready.
  • Plan for the encoder host: the local approach depends on a running computer and accessible NAS files, as well as internet connectivity. This is an architectural requirement, not a guarantee about reliability.
  • Separate local-library needs from broadcast needs: Jellyfin documents personal media and live-TV functionality, while Youtarr documents playlist importing and synchronization. See Jellyfin’s introduction, its Live TV documentation, and Youtarr’s media-server playlist guide. Those functions do not by themselves establish a YouTube Live encoder workflow.

Common problems and fixes

The NAS file does not appear or will not open

Make sure the share is connected on the computer running OBS, not merely visible from another device. Open the exact file path from that computer and confirm the account has permission to read it. If a mapped drive or mount changes, update the source path in OBS.

The VLC Video source is missing

Install VLC and restart OBS. Check that the VLC and OBS architectures match; OBS’s documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.

The playlist stops after the last item

Open the VLC Video source properties and check Loop Playlist. For a single Media Source, verify its separate Loop option instead.

YouTube does not receive the stream

Confirm the channel has live streaming enabled, the event is configured, and OBS is using that event’s current stream key. If this is the first live activation, YouTube says enablement may take at least 24 hours. Check the live preview and status in YouTube Studio.

The stream stops when you leave

OBS is running on your computer, so closing OBS, shutting down the host, losing the NAS connection, or losing internet connectivity can interrupt this local workflow. If you do not want a home computer to remain involved, use a cloud-hosted approach instead.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from videos uploaded to its cloud service. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. The service includes 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots, and the same features on every plan; only billing duration changes. See StreamNeo for details, then start the free day.

For a NAS collection, this means choosing the files or playlist to upload rather than having StreamNeo read directly from your NAS. Check storage needs and network upload time before moving a large library; StreamNeo provides an upload-time calculator.
