A stand or cooling pad can help when it matches the laptop’s vent layout, but no accessory guarantees a particular temperature reduction.
These steps address normal heat buildup without drilling holes, removing panels, repasting components, or changing firmware. If the laptop still overheats after external fixes, or its fan makes grinding or rolling sounds, stop experimenting and use the maker’s diagnostics or service process.

Start with this safe cooling sequence
Work through these steps in order. The first changes cost nothing and often solve heat caused by restricted airflow or unnecessary load.
- Move the laptop to a firm, level, uncluttered surface. A desk or table is preferable. Keep fabric, papers, bedding, walls and nearby objects away from the intake and exhaust openings. Do not use the computer directly on a lap when that position covers vents or traps heat.
- Identify every vent. Look along the bottom, sides and rear edge while the computer is off. Laptop layouts differ, so do not assume that a raised rear edge or a particular side is the intake. Leave the openings unobstructed when you reposition the machine.
- Check the operating environment. Use the temperature range in your model’s manual. ASUS guidance for the devices covered on its support page specifies an ambient range of 5°C to 35°C; that is manufacturer guidance for those relevant models, not a universal limit for every laptop.
- Close unnecessary demanding applications. Rendering, games, large file conversions, virtual machines and other sustained CPU- or GPU-intensive work can increase heat and fan speed. Save your work, quit tasks you do not need, and let the system settle for several minutes.
- Inspect resource use. Use your operating system’s task or resource monitor to find processes consuming unusually high CPU, GPU, memory or disk resources. Confirm that a heavy task is expected before ending it; terminate only applications you recognize and no longer need.
- Apply appropriate manufacturer updates. If the laptop maker’s support utility or documentation identifies a system, firmware or driver update for power or thermal behavior, follow that model-specific procedure. Do not install unofficial firmware or tuning tools simply to force lower temperatures.
After each change, observe fan behavior and the chassis during the same type of workload that previously caused concern. A warm case and audible fan under sustained work can be normal; the important question is whether airflow is unobstructed and the system remains stable.

Why placement has the biggest immediate effect
Laptop cooling depends on a small path: cooler room air enters through intake openings, heat is transferred away from the processor and graphics hardware, and warmed air leaves through exhaust openings. A soft surface can press against bottom vents or conform around them, reducing that path. HP’s Notebook PCs care guidance states, “Always use your notebook on a hard, flat surface.” It also explains that surfaces can block airflow through the vents, causing heat to build up inside the notebook.
Clearance matters even when the computer is on a desk. A rear exhaust placed against a wall, a sheet of paper over a side grille, or a cable bundle resting on a vent can restrict the outlet. Arrange the workspace so the laptop’s own openings have space around them rather than relying on a fan accessory to compensate for a blocked vent.
Should you use a stand or a cooling pad?
Neither accessory is required for every laptop. Dell describes a cooling pad as a supplement to the laptop’s built-in fans, while ASUS suggests a pad or stand to elevate the computer. The useful choice depends on the machine’s intake and exhaust arrangement, the accessory’s fit, and whether you accept extra noise or power use.

| Option | When it fits | What to check | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passive laptop stand | The laptop benefits from additional clearance and the stand does not cover any intake. | Stable contact points, correct width, unobstructed bottom vents, and a comfortable screen and keyboard angle. | No fan noise or separate power, but it cannot move air by itself. |
| Fan-equipped cooling pad | The pad’s fan locations line up with, or usefully support, the laptop’s intake area. | Vent alignment, stable fit, adjustable fan control, USB power needs, noise, and whether the pad’s surface blocks another opening. | May improve airflow, but performance varies by laptop design and adds noise, power draw and another device. |
| No accessory | The laptop already has clear vents and remains stable on a hard surface. | Keep the existing surface level and free of obstructions; inspect vents periodically. | Lowest cost and complexity, with no added elevation or airflow. |
Before buying either type, turn the laptop over and map the grilles. A pad that blows into a solid section of the base may do little, while one that covers an intake can make cooling worse. Do not select an accessory on a promised number of degrees saved: no comparative measured cooling result or universal temperature reduction is established for pads across laptops.
Choosing for ergonomics as well as airflow
Elevation changes the screen height and keyboard angle. Check that the computer cannot slide, that the display remains at a usable angle, and that the stand does not concentrate pressure on a small part of the chassis. For a fan pad, listen for its operating noise in the place where you work and check whether it needs a free USB port or its own power source.
Reduce heat by controlling workload
Heat usually tracks power use. A laptop that is cool while idle can become hot during sustained processor or graphics work without having a fault. Lenovo’s warm-PC guidance and MSI’s load guidance both point to resource-intensive activity as a reason for higher temperatures and fan speed.

Find the process responsible
- Open the operating system’s built-in task or resource monitor while the fans are running.
- Sort by CPU or GPU use, then look for a process that remains high rather than a brief startup spike.
- Match the process to something you intentionally launched, such as a game, export or update. If it is unnecessary, close it normally and allow the fans to slow.
- If an unknown process remains demanding, record its name and use the laptop maker’s support guidance or security tools instead of deleting system files.
Do not interrupt a critical update, backup or rendering job merely because the fans are audible. The safer response is to finish or pause the task according to its application, then reassess the system at idle.

Check the manufacturer’s support page or installed support utility for updates that apply to the exact model. Follow the stated power, driver and firmware instructions, keep the charger connected when required, and do not close the lid or interrupt an update unless the procedure says to do so. Avoid unofficial performance profiles that increase processor or graphics power; they can raise heat and complicate support.

A conservative cleaning procedure
- Shut the laptop down completely, not merely into sleep, and disconnect the charger and other cables.
- Read the exact cleaning instructions for the model. HP describes vent cleaning that does not require opening the computer: power off, disconnect power, use canned air, then wait before restarting.
- If the instructions permit canned air, keep the can at the distance specified on its label and direct short bursts across the grille rather than forcing debris deeper into the chassis.
- Keep the can upright. ASUS specifically warns against inverting compressed-air cans and against using powerful compressors, which can drive moisture or excessive force into the computer.
- Follow Dell’s guidance for the system in question. Whether a battery must be removed is model-specific; never assume that step applies to your laptop.
- Allow the waiting period in the manufacturer’s instructions to pass, reconnect power, and then check that the system starts and the fan behaves normally.
Never spray liquid cleaner into a vent, insert a tool through a grille, or hold a fan blade in place with an object. If dust is packed inside and the documented external procedure cannot remove it, use authorized service rather than escalating to disassembly.

There is no single temperature threshold that applies to every laptop, processor, graphics chip or operating mode. Judge the situation with the model’s documentation and the computer’s behavior.
| Observation | Likely interpretation | Safe next action |
|---|---|---|
| Warm case and faster fans during a known demanding task | Expected heat output under load may be passing through the cooling system. | Check that vents are clear, verify resource use, and reassess after the task ends. |
| Heat rises while the laptop is idle or doing light work | An unnecessary background process, blocked airflow or software issue may be involved. | Inspect resource use, move to a clear hard surface, and apply relevant manufacturer updates. |
| Unexpected shutdowns, severe slowdowns or repeated thermal warnings | The cooling system may not be coping or a component may need diagnosis. | Save data, stop the demanding activity and run the maker’s diagnostics or contact support. |
| Grinding, rolling or otherwise unusual fan sounds | Possible mechanical fan trouble; external cleaning may not resolve it. | Seek manufacturer service instead of opening the chassis. |
ASUS advises service when unusual fan noise occurs, and LG and MSI support guidance likewise direct users toward manufacturer diagnostics or service when overheating continues. Record when the problem occurs, which applications are running, whether the vents are clear, and any diagnostic code; those details help support identify a model-specific fault.

Common cooling mistakes to avoid
- Using bedding, a sofa or clothing as a desk: the material can cover bottom or side openings.
- Placing the exhaust against a wall or object: warm air has nowhere to leave efficiently.
- Buying a pad without checking vent alignment: its fan may miss the intake or obstruct it.
- Expecting a fixed temperature drop: laptop designs, workloads and room conditions differ, so accessory claims are not universal results.
- Blasting the laptop with a compressor or inverted can: excessive pressure or propellant can damage internal parts; follow the model’s instructions instead.
- Opening the chassis as a first response: disassembly can damage clips, cables or seals and may affect service eligibility.
- Ending every high-usage process blindly: some are legitimate updates or work; identify the task before stopping it.
- Applying a generic temperature limit: use the operating range and thermal guidance for the exact model.
A model-specific checklist
Keep this short checklist with the laptop’s manual:
- Where are the intake and exhaust openings?
- What ambient operating range does the manual specify?
- Does the maker permit external canned-air cleaning, and what distance, orientation and waiting period does it require?
- Does the model’s support utility provide diagnostics or relevant driver and firmware updates?
- Which sounds, warnings, shutdowns or performance changes require service?
Manufacturer pages can differ by product design and region. Use the instructions for the exact model and edition rather than transferring a step from another laptop.
When external fixes are enough—and when they are not
Placement, workload control and careful external cleaning are appropriate first measures because they do not alter the chassis or internal cooling hardware. A stand or pad is a considered add-on when it preserves the laptop’s airflow and ergonomics. Persistent overheating, failed fan diagnostics, repeated thermal warnings or abnormal fan sounds move the problem beyond safe external optimization. At that point, back up important data and arrange manufacturer support or authorized service instead of attempting internal repair.
