You can often get more time unplugged without making Windows feel sluggish: first check which apps are actually using battery, then tune display and idle settings, and use an efficient power mode or Battery saver only when its trade-offs suit your work. These Windows 11 steps are reversible; change one at a time and see what helps your own workload.
1. Find the source of battery drain before restricting apps
Start with the battery-use report rather than closing apps at random. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage and look for an app using more power than you would expect for how often you use it.

If an app supports background-activity controls, change that app’s setting or close it when you are finished. Avoid disabling background activity across the board: apps may need it to sync or deliver updates. Microsoft’s battery-saving tips describe the available battery and app options.

2. Choose a power mode that preserves responsiveness
In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. If available, choose Best power efficiency while unplugged. Microsoft describes Balanced as the option that balances performance and battery life, so switch back to it if a task feels noticeably slower. The available modes can depend on the PC and its manufacturer.

Best performance is more suitable for demanding work when connected to power: Microsoft warns that it uses more power and can make a laptop warmer. There is no guaranteed battery-life percentage for any one mode; the effect depends on the computer and what you are doing. See Microsoft’s power-mode guidance for more detail.
3. Adjust the display and idle timers
The display can be a practical place to save power without limiting the performance of your apps. Lower brightness to a comfortable level, and set the screen to turn off sooner when you are away. If your laptop has a high-refresh display and you mostly read or work with static content, try a lower refresh rate; motion may look less smooth.

Also consider shortening the time before the laptop sleeps when left unattended. These settings have visible convenience trade-offs: the screen may go dark sooner, and the laptop may sleep while you pause. Change one setting at a time so you can judge whether the trade-off is worthwhile. 4. Use Battery saver or Energy saver when its limits are acceptable
Battery saver can reduce power-intensive activity, including automatic syncing and activity from apps you are not currently using. Turn it on when charge is low or you need extra time away from an outlet, rather than leaving it on if those background tasks matter to you. Notifications or updates may arrive later, and exact labels and controls differ between Windows versions. Microsoft’s battery-saving guidance covers the feature.

5. Check battery condition if settings are not enough
If the laptop still runs for much less time than expected after you adjust power use, check the battery’s reported capacity. In an elevated Command Prompt, run:
powercfg /batteryreport
Open the report generated by Windows and review Installed battery, Recent usage, and Battery usage. The capacity figures can help distinguish battery wear from power use by apps or settings. Battery capacity declines with use, and reduced capacity means shorter runtime. Microsoft explains battery care and reporting in its battery-care guide. If the report suggests deterioration or you suspect a battery or charging fault, check the laptop maker’s model-specific support and replacement guidance.

6. Treat chargers and power banks as compatibility questions
A power bank can extend time away from an outlet only if the laptop supports charging through its connection and the bank and cable supply the power the laptop requires. A USB-C port alone does not guarantee that it can charge the laptop. Check the laptop maker’s specifications before buying. Microsoft’s guidance on USB-C problems and slow charging or discharge while plugged in explains relevant compatibility and charging issues.

Windows settings and labels can change between releases and vary by hardware. These paths focus on Windows 11; Windows 10 menus may differ, and Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Your actual runtime also depends on workload, display, connected devices, wireless use, and battery condition, so no single setting guarantees a particular improvement.
