For better Hindi-English dictation on Android, start with Gboard’s language settings: enable Hindi and English, keep only the languages you need active, and select one language explicitly when dictating a stretch in just that language. Then check microphone access and Voice typing. These steps can reduce setup problems, but they cannot guarantee accurate recognition of code-switching; Gboard’s language support depends on the specific voice-typing feature, device, locale, and app version.
Set up Gboard for Hindi and English
- Make sure Gboard is the keyboard selected on your Android phone. Open Gboard’s language settings; the route and labels vary by device and Gboard release.
- Add Hindi and English. In Gboard, switch between enabled keyboard languages with the language key. Depending on the feature and layout, a voice toolbar may also offer language controls.
- Keep the active language list focused. Google advises, “For smoother typing, stick to one or two active languages.” If you are dictating a passage entirely in Hindi or entirely in English, select that language before tapping the microphone. For mixed Hindi-English speech, test with only Hindi and English active, but do not assume that this ensures every language switch will be recognized correctly.
Google notes that talk-to-text does not work with all languages, and speech-to-text and punctuation support can vary by language. Adding Hindi and English to the keyboard is useful, but it does not by itself establish that every Gboard voice-typing mode supports both in the same way. Know which Gboard voice-typing feature you are using
Gboard has distinct voice-typing paths. Their language lists and requirements are not interchangeable, so check the Voice typing settings on your phone and follow the languages shown for the feature actually available there.

The feature-specific lists come from Google’s Advanced voice typing help and Polished Dictation help. The latter page is in Spanish; its language list is evidence for that named feature, not a promise of universal rollout. The available documentation does not support ranking these features by Hindi-English accuracy.

Check permissions and voice-typing settings
- In Android app permissions, allow Gboard to use the microphone.
- Open Gboard settings and make sure Voice typing is enabled. Exact menu names and paths can differ by Android version and device.
- If using Advanced voice typing, set the primary Gboard language and the device’s primary language to the same language, as Google requires for that feature.
- If you cannot find a newer feature, check the Voice typing screen and its language list. Availability depends on the device, locale, Android version, and current Gboard release.

Correct recognition errors and speak punctuation
When Gboard mishears a word, select it and replace it by typing or speaking the correction. Fixing an error at the word level is more direct than repeating an entire sentence.

Depending on the language, spoken punctuation commands may work. Examples include “period,” “comma,” “question mark,” “new line,” and “new paragraph.” These English examples may not work in Hindi or every other language; punctuation support varies, so test the commands you use rather than treating them as universal.
Troubleshoot lag without resetting the keyboard first
If dictation or typing is laggy, Google suggests turning off personalization as one troubleshooting step and clearing Gboard’s app cache. Clearing app data is more disruptive: it resets Gboard, so use it only if less disruptive checks have not helped and you are prepared to set the keyboard up again. These are troubleshooting steps for performance issues, not proven ways to improve Hindi-English recognition accuracy.

Understand the two separate audio privacy controls
Gboard’s “Personalize for you” option is intended to improve recognition for an individual. Google says it saves audio recordings and transcripts on the device, which users can delete in Gboard’s privacy settings. This is distinct from voluntary audio snippet donation, which sends snippets to Google to help improve speech recognition.
Google says donated snippets may contain up to 15 seconds of speech, or up to 25 seconds when they include silence or unrecognized audio, and says it will not keep them beyond 18 months. These details describe the donation program; they should not be taken to mean that every dictation feature processes or stores audio in the same way. What accuracy evidence is available?
Google’s guidance explains setup, language support, and troubleshooting, but it does not publish a Hindi-English Android dictation accuracy rate or a controlled comparison of microphones. There is therefore no supported percentage or general accuracy ranking to promise. A microphone must be available and permitted for dictation to work, but the cited guidance does not establish that an external microphone improves Hindi-English recognition.
