First work out whether “lag” is a network delay or choppy rendering on the tablet: rubber-banding and delayed online actions call for connection checks, while frame drops that continue offline point to device, game, or heat issues. The fixes differ, and no setting guarantees a universal FPS boost. Android menu names and available features vary by tablet and software version.
Identify what kind of lag you have
| What you notice | More likely cause | Best first check |
|---|---|---|
| Rubber-banding, delayed actions in an online match, disconnects, or connection trouble in other apps | Wi-Fi or internet connection | Move closer to the router, restart the tablet and router, and compare another network if available. |
| Choppy animation, dropped frames, or slow response that also happens offline or in several games | Local device or game performance | Restart, check for updates and free storage, and investigate apps that may be slowing the tablet. |
| A game starts smoothly but becomes choppy after a sustained session as the tablet gets hot | Heat-related performance reduction | Pause and let the tablet cool; make sure its ventilation is not blocked. |
For Wi-Fi problems, Google recommends checking the connection, moving closer to the router, restarting the device and router, and trying another network where possible: Google Play Help: Fix internet connection problems on Android devices. If other devices or apps also have connection trouble, graphics settings are unlikely to solve it.

Try device-level fixes in a safe order
1. Restart and narrow down the problem
Restart the tablet, then test the affected game again. If only one title is slow, check for that game’s updates and settings. If several games or apps are affected, focus on Android and the tablet rather than changing one game’s graphics settings.
2. Check updates and available storage
Install available Android and game updates, then check how much storage is free. Google says an Android device may begin having issues when less than 10% of its storage is free; this is a general troubleshooting warning, not a gaming benchmark. Remove files or apps you no longer need. See Google Android Help: Speed up a slow Android device.

Clearing an app’s cache removes temporary data, and the app may take longer to open the next time. Clearing its storage is different: it deletes app data, so do not use it casually as a performance fix. Google explains the distinction in Speed up a slow Android device and Clear up space.
3. Check for apps causing a slowdown
Close apps you are not using and consider whether a recently installed app coincides with the slowdown. If the tablet remains slow across apps, Google’s device troubleshooting guidance includes isolating a problematic downloaded app. Follow the instructions for your Android version before removing apps or changing system settings.

Adjust power and graphics settings with their trade-offs in mind
Battery Saver
Turn Battery Saver off while diagnosing a game that feels slow. Google says Battery Saver limits or turns off background activity; some visual effects, features, network connections, and apps can be delayed. The exact effect depends on the device and software. See Google Android Help: Get the most life from your Android device’s battery.

In-game graphics and frame rate
If the tablet cannot sustain the game’s chosen settings, lower graphics quality or select a lower frame-rate target in the game’s own settings. This can reduce the workload, but it trades visual detail or smoothness for a setting the device may sustain more consistently; it is not a guaranteed fix.

Display refresh rate
A higher display refresh rate can make supported content look smoother, but it does not force a game to render more frames. Android’s developer guidance notes that when the display refresh rate is higher than the game’s target frame rate, the higher setting may provide no benefit while using more display power. Check the game’s frame-rate options as well as the tablet’s display setting: Android Developers: Optimize power efficiency.
On supported Samsung Galaxy devices, search Settings for Motion smoothness; available choices can include Standard, High, or Adaptive, depending on the model. Samsung says Power Saving mode sets the display to Standard on the devices described in its guide. Follow Samsung Support: How to adjust refresh rate options on your Galaxy phone or tablet for model-specific details.

Use a game mode only if your tablet and game support it
Android Game Mode interventions are available on selected Android 12 devices and devices running Android 13 or later, but operating-system version alone does not guarantee that a setting will appear: device-maker and per-game support matter. Details for developers are in Android Developers: Game Mode interventions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Some Samsung Galaxy tablets expose game options through Gaming Hub or Game Booster. Samsung describes Performance, Standard, and Battery saver modes; Performance prioritizes game performance and may increase heat and battery use, while Standard balances the two. Availability and menu paths vary by model. See Samsung Support: Use Gaming Hub and gaming options on your Galaxy device.
Let a hot tablet cool before changing more settings
If performance falls during a long session and the tablet feels hot, pause the game and let it cool. Avoid covering the device or blocking its ventilation. Android’s developer documentation explains that high CPU and GPU use generates heat and that an overly hot device can downclock its CPU and GPU, affecting game performance and battery drain. It does not establish a universal temperature threshold or a tested cooling accessory recommendation: Android Developers: Optimize power efficiency.
Know what Android’s performance figures do—and do not—mean
Android Developers reports up to 30% lower GPU load and up to 10% lower overall system power for a specific WindowManager backbuffer-resizing Game Mode intervention. It also reports up to 50% lower GPU power and up to 20% lower system power for FPS throttling. These are maximums for specific technical interventions, varying by device and conditions—not expected gains from ordinary troubleshooting on a consumer tablet. FPS throttling limits frame rate to improve stability or power use; it cannot raise a game above its original frame rate. See Game Mode interventions and FPS throttling.
Quick Recap
Escalate according to the symptom
- Online connection problems persist: After checking signal, restarting the router and tablet, and comparing another network if possible, contact your internet provider or network host. Consider a different router only if testing points to weak or unreliable home Wi-Fi; it will not fix device rendering, heat, or a game-server problem.
- Only one game remains slow: Check its updates and graphics options, then consult the game’s support team.
- The whole tablet remains slow: After restart, updates, storage cleanup, and app isolation, follow the tablet maker’s support instructions or contact its support team.
