If Chrome Reading Mode won’t appear, first try it on a conventional text article: some page types are unsupported or may not extract correctly. On desktop, open More > More tools > Reading mode, use the address-bar Reading Mode control if it appears, or try the platform shortcut. On Android, choose More > Show Reading mode. If Reading Mode opens but misses a passage on desktop, select that text on the original page to open it in Reading Mode.
First identify what is failing
These symptoms have different causes and fixes. Check whether the issue affects one page or ordinary text pages generally, and whether Chrome itself can load websites normally.

- Reading Mode is missing on one page: the page may not be compatible.
- The launch option is missing on desktop: try the menu, address-bar control, or shortcut, then update Chrome.
- Reading Mode opens but text is missing or garbled: check the page type and, on desktop, select the missing passage on the original page.
- The text is present but the layout is uncomfortable: adjust Reading Mode’s view and display settings.
- Regular websites also fail to load: troubleshoot Chrome’s general loading problem separately.
Desktop: Reading Mode won’t appear
Try another launch method
Open a page with ordinary article text, then try one of these documented entry points:
- Menu: More > More tools > Reading mode.
- Address bar: click the Reading Mode control if it appears.
- Page context menu: right-click the page and choose Open in reading mode.
- Keyboard shortcut: press Alt + Shift + r on Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS; on macOS, press Command + Option + r.
If the shortcut opens something unexpected, another app may be using the same key combination. Google documents these entry points in its Chrome Reading Mode instructions.

Update Chrome if the controls are absent
If the menu command and other documented controls are absent even on a conventional text page, update Chrome and check again. Google includes updating Chrome among its Reading Mode troubleshooting steps. Interface labels and availability can change between releases.
Pin Reading Mode for easier access
If you can open Reading Mode but want a more direct launch path, pin it to the toolbar from Reading Mode settings or the side panel. Google explains the pinning options in its Reading Mode help and side panel instructions.

Reading Mode is unavailable on this page
Reading Mode does not work with every website or page format. Google says it may not be compatible with video or forum websites and may not work as expected with image galleries, interactive maps, forms, quizzes, payment pages, and login screens. A setting change cannot be relied on to make an incompatible page work.

If Reading Mode works there, the problem is likely limited to the original page’s format or content rather than the feature being absent from Chrome.

Desktop: Reading Mode opens but misses text
Open a selected passage
If a particular passage is missing from the extracted view, return to the original page, highlight the text you want, and trigger Reading Mode. Google documents this as a workaround for missing text.
Check what the display settings affect
Reading Mode’s typography settings change only the text shown in its own view; they do not restyle the original website. If the extraction itself is incomplete or garbled, changing font or theme is unlikely to restore content that was not brought into Reading Mode.

Give the text more room
If text appears cramped rather than missing, switch between side-panel and full-screen views or resize the side panel by dragging its border. Google documents both options in its Reading Mode help.

Desktop: the view or text looks wrong
Open Reading Mode settings to choose full-screen or side-panel view. You can also adjust font size, typeface, color theme, line height, and letter spacing; desktop controls can show or hide links and images. These options alter the Reading Mode presentation, not the page itself.

If you want Reading Mode to open in the side panel by default, a Chrome Support Manager Community Manager named Alex advised on May 28, 2026, to open Reading Mode settings, select View, and choose Side panel. This is dated community guidance, so the setting’s label or persistence may vary by Chrome release; see the Chrome Community response.
Android: Reading Mode is unavailable
- Open the page in Chrome and tap More > Show Reading mode.
- If Chrome displays “Reading mode is unavailable”, try a conventional text article to see whether the issue is limited to that page.
- When Reading Mode is available, adjust font style, font size, or the light, sepia, and dark background in the Reading Mode sheet. Those settings change the reading view, not the website generally.

If ordinary Chrome pages also fail to load
A page-loading failure across Chrome is a different problem from Reading Mode failing to extract text. Check whether only one site is affected, verify your connection, then update and restart Chrome. If the issue persists, investigate extensions, browsing data, available memory, or a site or network problem as appropriate. Google’s Chrome page-loading troubleshooting guide covers these general steps; they do not establish that cache or an extension caused a Reading Mode extraction problem.
