Square Enix says those graphics changes should improve performance, but neither its patch notes nor Steam’s Steam Deck Verified label provides a tested Deck preset or a guaranteed frame rate.
Update the game first
Install any available update before changing settings. Square Enix’s PC update history records a frame-rate-drop fix in version 1.01, released September 26, 2024, and performance-oriented graphics changes in version 1.02, released October 17, 2024. The publisher’s PC update notes document those changes; the dated entries do not establish whether later updates have been released.

Lower the settings most clearly linked to performance
Reduce Graphical Fidelity
In the game’s graphics settings, lower Graphical Fidelity and check whether the game runs more smoothly in the scenes that were giving you trouble. Square Enix says the setting was adjusted in version 1.02 “to improve overall game performance.” Its notes do not specify a best value for Steam Deck.
Set Shadow Quality to Low or Medium
Choose Low or Medium for Shadow Quality. Version 1.02 expanded the setting so cloud quality is included at all three levels, and Square Enix says selecting Low or Medium “should improve performance.” This is the clearest specific setting recommendation in the publisher’s PC notes, but it is not a measured Deck result.

Test changes on your own Deck
- Choose a repeatable scene or activity where you notice slowdowns.
- Change one setting—Graphical Fidelity or Shadow Quality—then revisit that same scene.
- Keep the change if it improves play without making image quality unacceptable; otherwise, restore it and test the other setting.
This one-change-at-a-time approach helps identify what matters on your device. It is a troubleshooting method, not a benchmark: results can vary by scene and device conditions, and no Deck-specific preset or LCD-versus-OLED comparison is established by the cited sources.
What Steam Deck Verified does—and does not—tell you
Steam currently marks FINAL FANTASY XVI as Steam Deck Verified on its store listing. Verified is a compatibility designation, not a performance guarantee or an FPS target. The listing’s PC minimum-requirement note says “30FPS at 720p expected”; that is a general PC requirement, not a measured Steam Deck result. It should not be read as a promise of stable 30 FPS on a Deck.

Why older stutter notes are not a current performance verdict
Square Enix’s PC demo update history records a September 10, 2024 fix for a stuttering issue and says the fixes would also be applied to the release version. Earlier, on August 22, the publisher said it was investigating stuttering on some PC environments while also updating upscaler image quality and addressing a Dynamic Resolution issue. These are historical notes: they do not establish that every current stutter has been eliminated, or explain every slowdown on Steam Deck.
