A spare compatible battery gives you more flying across a session by allowing a swap; it does not make one battery last longer on a single charge.
What actually determines a drone’s flight time
Flight time is an energy-and-weight problem. DJI’s Onboard SDK documentation puts it plainly: “Product flight time is determined by total aircraft mass and the available stored (battery) energy on the aircraft.” The aircraft must spend energy to lift itself, its battery and every accessory or payload. Adding mass can therefore consume the extra energy gained from a larger battery.

Stored energy depends on more than the number printed on a battery. Battery capacity, energy density, the propulsion system’s supported mass, battery age, temperature and the aircraft’s operating conditions all affect how much energy is usable in the air. A manufacturer’s “maximum flight time” is a controlled claim, not a promise that every flight will reach that figure.

Flight time is how long the aircraft can remain airborne on one charge. Battery life usually means how many charge cycles or months the battery remains healthy enough to hold useful energy. Flying longer per charge and preserving the battery over its service life require related but different actions: reducing payload helps the first, while correct storage and charging help the second.

Remove weight before buying a bigger battery
Start with the easiest, lowest-risk change: remove anything the mission does not require. Optional lights, guards, mounts, cables, filters, landing accessories and unused sensors all add mass and aerodynamic drag. Weigh the aircraft in its actual takeoff configuration, including the battery and payload, then compare that mass with the limits in the aircraft manual.
Why payload can make a large difference
DJI’s approximate Matrice 100 table illustrates the relationship. With the listed TB47D configuration, the manufacturer gives these approximate maximum flight times:
| Payload | Approximate maximum flight time | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 0 g | 22 minutes | Reference configuration in DJI’s table |
| 500 g | 17 minutes | Five minutes less than the no-payload example |
| 1,000 g | 13 minutes | Nine minutes less than the no-payload example |
These numbers apply to that aircraft and battery configuration; they are not a universal payload-to-flight-time formula. They do show why a payload should be treated as a direct flight-time trade-off. If a sensor or accessory is essential, plan the mission around the shorter time rather than assuming a larger battery will cancel the added weight.
Check accessories that change handling
An attachment can affect more than weight. DJI’s Avata support guidance notes that its propeller guard makes the aircraft more sensitive to wind. That is a model-specific example, but the principle is broader: a guard, cage or large mount can change airflow and require more power to hold position. Read the accessory instructions and the aircraft manual before treating an attachment as flight-neutral.
Choose a battery for the exact aircraft
Use only the battery model and specification approved for your aircraft. A connector that fits is not proof of electrical, firmware or mechanical compatibility. Check the aircraft manual, battery label and the manufacturer’s compatibility list before purchasing or borrowing a replacement.

Energy versus mass: the larger-battery trade-off
DJI’s TB47 and TB48 documentation provides a product-line example. The TB48 is listed with 10–15% higher energy density than the TB47; the same documentation lists 99 Wh for TB47 and 130 Wh for TB48. DJI also cautions that the TB48’s greater mass can restrict payload. The figures describe those batteries, not a general improvement rate for all drone batteries.
| Battery example | Stored energy listed by DJI | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| TB47 | 99 Wh | Reference battery in the cited product line |
| TB48 | 130 Wh | Higher energy, but higher mass may reduce permitted payload |
When comparing two approved batteries, calculate the complete takeoff mass and verify the aircraft’s payload limit after the change. More watt-hours can improve endurance only if the propulsion system can carry the additional battery mass efficiently and the aircraft remains within its approved limits.

Do not mix batteries casually
- Match the battery to the exact aircraft model and supported firmware.
- Do not combine batteries with different specifications in a configuration that the manual does not approve.
- Inspect the housing, contacts and latching mechanism before installation.
- Retire any battery that is swollen, cracked, leaking or unusually hot.
Use a preflight routine that protects available energy
A few checks before takeoff prevent a weak or unsuitable battery from turning into an early landing.
- Confirm the battery identity. Verify the model and specification against the aircraft manual.
- Check health information. Review the aircraft app or charger for capacity, cycle count, cell warnings and abnormal voltage differences when those readings are available.
- Inspect the physical pack. Look for swelling, damage, contamination on contacts or a loose latch. Do not fly a damaged or swollen pack.
- Account for the mission mass. Install the payload and every accessory you will carry, then use the aircraft’s takeoff-weight and payload limits.
- Check temperature. Follow the battery’s specified preflight range and any warm-up or preheating procedure.
- Set a conservative return or landing margin. Wind, payload and temperature can reduce the time remaining after a low-battery warning. Use the aircraft’s return-to-home and low-battery settings as safeguards, not as permission to consume every last percentage point.
Manage cold and heat correctly
Temperature changes the battery’s ability to deliver current. Autel’s EVO Max Series manual v1.3.0 (2025) says that below +5°C, internal resistance can increase and voltage can drop rapidly, reducing discharge capacity and flight time. For that series, it gives +15°C to +35°C as the optimal battery temperature before takeoff.
Those values are not universal limits. Treat them as an example of why the manual for your own model matters. A battery that is warm indoors can become cold quickly in the air, especially in wind. Keep the pack within the manufacturer’s permitted range, use the specified preheating function when provided, and postpone a flight if the battery cannot reach the required temperature.

Charging after a cold or hot flight
Do not immediately put a hot battery on the charger. Autel’s EVO II Pro FAQ advises waiting until the battery returns to room temperature before charging. DJI’s Avata guidance lists a 5°C to 40°C charging range and identifies 22°C to 28°C as ideal for battery life. These are model-specific instructions, so use the applicable battery manual rather than applying one brand’s range to another aircraft.
Charge and store batteries for long service life
Battery aging reduces the energy available on each flight. DJI states that as a battery ages, it stores less energy and total expected product use time, including flight time, is reduced. Good storage cannot stop aging, but it can avoid unnecessary damage from heat, deep discharge and long periods at full charge.
Between flights
- Let the battery cool to the permitted charging temperature.
- Inspect it for swelling or impact damage before connecting the charger.
- Use the manufacturer-approved charger, cable and charging hub.
- Keep batteries away from moisture, direct sun and high heat while they wait for the next flight.
Long-term storage
DJI’s general battery-care checklist recommends storing batteries at 40%–65% charge in a dry, cool location and storing them separately. DJI warns that leaving an intelligent flight battery fully charged for a long period can seriously affect battery life. Some intelligent batteries automatically discharge during storage; follow the specific battery’s instructions for the discharge interval and the charge level to use before putting it away.
Record the date a pack was placed in storage and check it periodically for damage, swelling or an unexpectedly low charge. If the battery has swollen, stop using it and contact the manufacturer or an authorized dealer for the approved disposal or replacement procedure.
Understand what a “maximum flight time” claim means
Manufacturers normally state maximum endurance under defined conditions. Autel’s EVO II Pro FAQ, for example, claims up to 40 minutes “when flying in a steady environment.” That is a manufacturer claim under the stated condition, not a guarantee of a 40-minute working flight in wind, cold weather or a payload configuration.

Use published figures as a planning ceiling. Build your actual mission around the aircraft’s battery warnings, the return-to-home margin, wind direction, payload, temperature and the distance required to reach a safe landing point. A shorter planned sortie with reserve is safer than treating the headline number as usable time.
Extend a flying session with spare batteries
A spare compatible battery is the practical way to increase total time available at a location. Land, power down as required, replace the pack and continue with a charged spare. DJI describes its batteries as swappable between flights, but the replacement must match the exact aircraft model and approved specification.
| Goal | What helps | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Longer flight on one charge | Lower payload, healthy battery, suitable temperature and efficient mission planning | A spare battery does not increase the endurance of the battery currently installed |
| More time flying during a visit | One or more charged, compatible spare batteries | It does not change the aircraft’s per-charge flight time |
| Faster turnaround | Approved charger or model-specific charging hub | A hub cannot make an incompatible or damaged battery safe |
DJI’s Avata support page describes a hub that can charge up to four Avata batteries. That feature is specific to the Avata system; do not assume another drone can use the same hub or charge multiple packs simultaneously. Check regional electrical requirements, charging order and the exact battery models supported by the hub.

For cold-weather work
Warm the battery according to the model’s instructions, verify its temperature before arming and keep a reserve for the possibility of a faster voltage drop. If the pack cannot reach the required preflight range, reschedule rather than relying on a nominal capacity figure.
For all-day operations
Prepare a rotation of compatible batteries, a manufacturer-approved charger and a safe place for packs to cool before charging. Label packs so that a battery showing reduced capacity or abnormal behavior is not accidentally returned to service.
Troubleshoot a sudden drop in flight time
The flight is shorter after adding an accessory
Remove the accessory for a controlled comparison, then check the aircraft’s takeoff mass and the accessory’s effect on airflow or wind handling. A guard or mount can increase power demand even when its weight appears small. If the accessory is essential, revise the mission duration and landing reserve rather than forcing the old schedule.
Recommended Free Tools
The battery percentage falls quickly in cold weather
Check the battery temperature before takeoff and compare it with the model’s manual. For the EVO Max example, temperatures below +5°C can raise internal resistance and cause rapid voltage drop. Warm the pack only by the manufacturer-approved method; do not use an improvised heat source or charge a battery outside its permitted charging range.
A previously strong battery now gives less time
Battery aging naturally reduces stored energy. Review the battery’s health and cycle information, compare it with a known-good pack of the same model and inspect for swelling or damage. If capacity has declined materially or the pack shows a warning, replace it with an approved battery instead of trying to recover it with unsupported charging cycles.
The battery is hot after landing
Allow it to cool in a dry, ventilated location before charging. Follow the model’s permitted charging temperature; the EVO II Pro guidance specifically advises waiting for room temperature, while DJI’s Avata guidance gives 5°C to 40°C as its charging range. If the pack remains abnormally hot, is damaged or swells, discontinue use and seek the manufacturer’s disposal or service guidance.
Quick Recap
A practical battery-care checklist
- Before every flight: verify model compatibility, inspect the pack, confirm health status, account for payload and check temperature.
- After every flight: let the battery cool, inspect it again and recharge only within the permitted range.
- Before storage: use the model’s storage charge level; DJI’s general recommendation is 40%–65%, in a cool, dry place.
- Before the next mission: confirm that stored packs have not swollen, self-discharged unexpectedly or developed a warning.
- When planning endurance: use the aircraft-specific maximum as a ceiling, then subtract the reserve needed to return and land safely.
What to prioritize when choosing an upgrade
- First, reduce unnecessary mass. This improves endurance without changing the electrical system.
- Second, replace an aging or incompatible battery. More nominal capacity is irrelevant if the pack is unsafe or unsupported.
- Third, solve temperature problems. A battery outside its operating range may deliver far less energy than its label suggests.
- Fourth, consider an approved higher-energy battery. Compare its added mass, payload effect and aircraft compatibility, using the manufacturer’s figures for that exact system.
- Finally, add spare packs for session length. Plan cooling and charging between flights so the rotation does not shorten battery service life.
