Change one setting at a time, restart the browser, and compare the same game scene. Acceleration can help some graphics workloads, but it can also cause flickering, crashes, or other problems on some systems.
Start with the game’s own graphics guidance
Browser games do not all use graphics in the same way. A setting that helps one game or visual mode may not help another, so look for the game’s own support instructions before changing browser-wide options.

For example, Chess.com recommends hardware acceleration for certain animated and 3D board styles, while its separate Live Chess troubleshooting guide suggests trying acceleration off if Live Chess is slow. Should hardware acceleration be on or off?
Hardware acceleration lets the browser use the computer’s graphics processor (GPU) for some display work, including games and animations, rather than relying as much on the main processor (CPU). Firefox describes this as reducing CPU load, but it does not guarantee smoother performance in every game or on every graphics driver.

Start with the browser’s recommended settings unless the game’s help page or a specific problem gives you a reason to test a change. If you see flickering, graphics-driver-related crashes, or unusually high GPU temperature while browsing, Mozilla says turning acceleration off may help. Restart Firefox after changing the setting. Change the setting in Firefox
- Open Settings: Select the Firefox menu, then choose Settings.
- Go to Performance: Under General, find the Performance section.
- Show the acceleration option: Clear Use recommended performance settings to expose the related controls, including hardware acceleration.
- Test one change: Toggle hardware acceleration, then fully restart Firefox.
- Compare the same scene: Reopen the same game and repeat the same action or view. If the result is worse or unstable, restore the previous setting.
Use a controlled test to find the cause
Changing several options at once makes it difficult to tell what helped. Use this sequence to separate game-specific settings from browser, driver, or background-work issues:

- Note the game, visual mode, browser, and the symptom: stutter, slow response, rendering glitches, or a crash.
- Check the game’s support advice for that mode before changing browser settings.
- Test hardware acceleration on its current setting, then toggle it only if there is a reason to do so.
- Restart the browser and repeat the same scene under similar conditions.
- If the game has its own graphics-quality controls, try lowering quality as a separate, reversible test. Not every browser game exposes those controls.
There is no established universal graphics preset or measured frame-rate gain for these changes. Treat the result in your own game and setup as the deciding factor.
Check drivers when WebGL or rendering fails
WebGL and other advanced web graphics can depend on both the graphics card and its driver. If a game fails to render correctly or reports a graphics problem, check for updates through your computer maker’s or graphics vendor’s supported method.

A driver update is not a guaranteed performance boost. Mozilla notes that some combinations of graphics card, driver, and operating system can still have problems; generic drivers can also be unsuitable for systems with manufacturer-customized configurations. Use the update instructions for your particular computer or graphics hardware rather than assuming the newest generic package is always the right choice.

As a low-risk diagnostic step, close tabs and applications you do not need while playing. This can help determine whether background activity is contributing to sluggishness, though it does not promise a measurable improvement on every device.

What Edge PC gaming boost does
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft Edge’s PC gaming boost can put certain inactive tabs to sleep when a game launches, reducing browser resource use. Availability and behavior vary by device, market, and browser version. Check whether the feature is available in your Edge installation; do not assume it is enabled or supported everywhere. If changing acceleration does not resolve the issue, the cause may not be that setting alone. The symptom and context help decide what to test next:

- One game or visual mode is slow: Recheck that game’s own support page and graphics options.
- Flicker or graphics instability appears: Restore the prior acceleration setting and check the browser’s compatibility guidance.
