To improve a Bluetooth speaker’s sound, first try moving it and listening from the place you normally sit; then set your phone, computer and playback app’s EQ to flat or off before making small tone adjustments. Walls and corners can change perceived bass, but there is no one placement or EQ setting that works for every speaker and room.
Start with the speaker’s position
Choose the listening position you want to optimize and make sure the speaker’s sound path is not blocked by furniture, a wall or other objects. Play a familiar track at a normal listening level, then try a few nearby locations. Listen from the same spot each time so you can judge the change rather than the change in perspective.

Nearby walls and corners can reinforce low frequencies. If the bass sounds boomy or overwhelming, try moving the speaker farther from a wall or corner. If it sounds thin, try moving it closer to a boundary. These are experiments, not guaranteed fixes: the result depends on the room and the speaker. Cambridge Audio describes how room acoustics affect speaker sound, while Bose’s SoundLink Mini troubleshooting guidance also suggests checking placement when bass or treble balance seems wrong.
Change one placement variable at a time—for example, move the speaker away from a wall without also changing its height or angle. Compare bass balance, clarity and whether the output is unobstructed from your intended listening position. Don’t assume advice for a pair of stereo speakers or studio monitors applies to a single portable speaker.

Reset EQ and sound processing before adjusting
Before tuning the sound, establish a neutral baseline. Check the phone, computer and music or video app for equalizer settings. Set EQ to flat or off, and temporarily disable overlapping features such as loudness, bass enhancement, compression or reverb. If more than one device or app is altering the signal, it can be hard to tell which change helped or hurt.
Once the baseline is clear, make modest bass or treble changes, one control at a time. Use a familiar track and listen from the same position. Avoid copying a fixed graphic-EQ curve from another speaker: the best adjustment depends on the speaker, room, recording and your preference. Bose cautions in its SoundLink Mini troubleshooting material that extreme bass and treble settings can reduce sound quality.

Check your speaker’s own app and manual
Some models offer placement presets or automatic calibration; others do not. Check the manual or app for your exact model rather than assuming another brand’s controls apply. Bang & Olufsen’s placement-based sound settings, for example, are available only for listed Beosound models. Cambridge Audio’s cited room-correction workflow is for supported left/right systems, not a universal setting for portable Bluetooth speakers.
Harman Kardon’s Onyx Studio 8 support page says that model automatically calibrates when powered on and music begins, and recommends keeping it at least 0.5 m from walls. That distance is specific to the Onyx Studio 8 and should not be treated as a general rule. If your speaker has calibration or placement settings, follow its model-specific instructions and revisit them if you move it.

If the sound is poor only from a computer
Check the Bluetooth audio mode as well as EQ. In its support guidance for the Bose SoundLink Home Bluetooth Speaker, Bose specifies the Stereo/A2DP entry rather than Hands-Free/HSP for full-range audio on Windows. The exact device labels and steps may vary by Windows version and speaker, so confirm the current Windows interface and your speaker’s support instructions.

If you are using two speakers as a stereo pair, symmetry, spacing and your position relative to the pair become relevant. General stereo-placement guides may discuss those factors, but they are not requirements for one all-in-one portable speaker. Harman Audio’s cited placement article focuses on monitors, and Klipsch’s guide addresses stereo speakers; use them only when their setup matches yours.
