To make an Android phone last longer on a charge, start by reducing screen use and brightness, then check which apps are using the most battery. Use Battery Saver when you can accept its limits, and cut back on power-heavy activities such as hotspot use, navigation, streaming, and demanding games. Keep the phone cool. Android settings differ by manufacturer and version, so the names and availability of options may vary.
Make quick screen changes
The display can use substantial power, especially when it stays on for a long time or is set to high brightness. Try these changes first:

- Lower brightness, or enable adaptive brightness if it suits your environment.
- Shorten the screen timeout and turn the screen off when you are not using the phone.
- Try Dark theme if your phone offers it.
On supported Pixel phones, Google also suggests turning off Always-on Display, live wallpaper, or Smooth Display. These are Pixel-specific examples, not options available on every Android phone. Find the equivalent settings, if any, in your phone maker’s display settings.

Open your phone’s Battery settings and review battery use. On Pixel, the documented path is Settings > Battery > Battery usage, where you can review use by app. Menu names and paths differ on other Android phones.

If an app uses a lot of battery in the background and you do not need it to stay active, use its battery or background-use controls to restrict it. Keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled in general; disabling optimization can let an app run more while you are not using it. Restricting background activity can delay notifications or other app updates, so make exceptions only when an app needs to work promptly in the background.
Choose a power-saving mode when you need it
Battery Saver can reduce background activity, and depending on the phone it may also limit features or connectivity. Some apps may work differently or deliver notifications later while it is on. Availability and controls depend on the manufacturer and Android version.

On Pixel phones, Battery Saver can be switched on manually or scheduled. Supported models also offer Extreme Battery Saver. Google’s Pixel guidance notes that Adaptive Battery may reduce performance and delay notifications; it can take weeks to adapt after setup or a factory reset.

When you need more time before your next charge, focus on activities that keep the screen, radios, location services, or processor busy for a long time:

- Limit hotspot or tethering use when other devices do not need your connection.
- Reduce long GPS navigation sessions, particularly when the screen remains on.
- Download or pause streaming when practical, and limit graphics-heavy games or extended camera use.
- Turn off Bluetooth or Location only when you do not need them. Disabling Location can stop some apps and features from working.
- Use airplane mode only when you do not need cellular service. Wi-Fi may use less battery than mobile data in the circumstances described by Google’s Android guidance, but the result depends on your connection and use.
These are situational changes, not a reason to leave useful connectivity disabled all day.
Keep the phone cool and distinguish battery care from today’s runtime
Google Android Help states, “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use.” Avoid leaving the phone in hot surroundings or subjecting it to sustained heat. Heat can also damage the battery.

For charging, Google’s Android guidance recommends using the adapter that came with the phone and says you do not need repeated full-to-empty cycles to train the battery’s capacity. Supported Pixel phones have separate charging-optimization features that can delay charging to full or set an 80% limit. Those options are intended to support long-term battery health; they do not increase the charge available today.
Investigate sudden or persistent battery drain
- Check battery use. Look for an app with unusually high use, especially in the background, and restrict it if that will not interrupt something you rely on.
- Restart the phone and install available updates. Check for Android system and app updates. Google notes that a little extra drain for a few days after a software update can be normal.
- Use model-specific diagnostics and support. Pixel 6 and later include a Battery diagnostics option according to Google Pixel Phone Help. If the problem continues, follow your phone maker’s or carrier’s support instructions.
- Treat a factory reset as a last resort. It removes apps and data from the phone. Back up the data you need before resetting, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Persistent drain by itself does not establish that the battery needs replacement; use a device-specific diagnosis before making that decision.
