A photo or screenshot of your driver’s license is not the same as an official digital ID, and a retailer may reject it. An issuer-provided digital credential may work only where local rules recognize it, the required verification method is available, and the store chooses to accept it. Because alcohol-ID rules vary by jurisdiction, carry physical ID as a fallback.
Can I use a picture of my ID to buy alcohol?
Do not rely on a photo or screenshot of a physical ID. It is only an image; it does not verify that the underlying card is valid or belongs to you. Some jurisdictions expressly reject these images. Georgia’s Alcohol and Tobacco Division says, “Screenshots or photos of the mDL are not acceptable,” and Western Australia likewise says photos or screenshots of physical ID are not accepted.

Putting a picture of your card in your phone’s gallery or wallet does not turn it into an issuer-verified digital ID. A store can refuse the image even if it clearly shows your name, photo, and date of birth.

Possibly, if the credential is issued through an official app or wallet, local rules recognize it for the transaction, and the retailer can verify it in the required way. Rules differ by location and may distinguish between on-premises sales and alcohol bought for off-premises consumption.

These examples are not interchangeable rules. A digital ID accepted in one place—or by one retailer—may not be accepted elsewhere.
Does the store have to accept a digital ID?
Not necessarily. Illinois says licensees do not have to accept Mobile IDs, and the UK government says businesses are not required to adopt certified digital proof of age. California ABC also explains that businesses may use a stricter company policy than the legal minimum. A store’s ability to verify a credential, as well as its own policy, can therefore affect whether it accepts one.

California’s guidance describes bona fide identification using factors such as government issuance, name, date of birth, photograph, physical description, and current validity. It does not establish a general right to use a digital photo of an ID. California ABC identification guidance

Why can alcohol ID requirements depend on the sale?
Some rules set out what sellers must do for particular alcohol transactions rather than granting blanket acceptance to every kind of digital credential. Texas guidance, for example, addresses age verification for specified sales for off-premises consumption: the seller visually inspects and scans the ID or enters its information into an electronic reader. If the seller cannot access the internet to scan or enter the information, the guidance calls for visual inspection. Texas statutory provisions set out the covered transaction types and exceptions. This does not establish that a screenshot or any particular digital wallet credential is acceptable.

What to check before relying on a digital ID
- Check the jurisdiction. Look up the rules for the state, territory, or country where you will buy alcohol; digital-ID recognition is not universal.
- Confirm the credential type. Verify that the rule covers the issuer-provided digital ID you have, rather than a photo or screenshot of a physical card.
- Check how it must be verified. The location may require a particular reader, app, or certified service. A screen that merely displays an image may not meet that requirement.
- Ask the retailer. Acceptance may be optional, and company policy can be stricter than the legal minimum.
- Bring physical ID when possible. It is a practical backup if the credential is not recognized, the store declines it, or the required verification is unavailable.
