What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Start by lowering screen brightness, shortening screen timeout, and checking which apps or features use the most power. Then make targeted changes—rather than restricting every app or turning off useful connections. Android menus and battery features vary by manufacturer, model, Android version, carrier, and region, so labels may differ from the examples below.
Make quick changes that reduce everyday drain
Adjust the screen
- Lower brightness to a level that remains comfortable to read. If adaptive brightness works well for you, turn it on instead of repeatedly raising brightness yourself.
- Shorten the screen timeout so the display turns off sooner when you stop using the phone. Pixel phones, for example, offer a 30-second timeout setting; the available choices depend on the device. Google Pixel battery guidance and Android Help recommend display adjustments to conserve power.
- If your phone has an OLED display, try dark theme: black pixels on an OLED screen can switch off. The benefit does not apply in the same way to every display type.
Reduce small, optional activity
If you do not need them, turn off keyboard sounds or vibration. These are modest adjustments, not guaranteed major savings. Android’s battery-saving guidance also describes these and other common settings.

Find what is using the battery before restricting apps
Open Settings → Battery → Battery usage, or the closest equivalent on your phone. Menu names and the period covered vary. Look for an app or feature using more power than you would expect, especially if the drain began recently. Motorola’s instructions, for example, show usage since the last full charge and allow you to open a high-use item to manage it. Motorola’s moto g (2025) battery guide and Google’s Pixel guidance document battery-use views.
Change background use selectively
Restrict background activity only when an app is unusually power-hungry and you can accept delays to its alerts or updates. On Pixel, Google recommends leaving apps set to Optimized in general; battery settings can be changed for selected apps. Avoid restricting messaging, security, or other apps whose timely notifications matter to you.

Turn on Adaptive Battery if available
Adaptive Battery learns which apps you use and can limit activity for apps you use infrequently. It is distinct from Battery Saver: it manages less-used apps over time, while Battery Saver is a temporary power-saving mode. Availability and behavior vary by device. Google notes that Pixel optimization after setup or a factory reset can take a few weeks to reach its full effect; that timing is Pixel-specific, not a promise for every Android phone. See Google Pixel Help and Motorola Support.
Use Battery Saver when you need the remaining charge
Battery Saver can reduce background activity and limit or turn off some features. Depending on the phone, apps may update later, connections may behave differently, or visual effects may be reduced. Turn it on when stretching a low charge matters more than immediate updates or full functionality; the exact controls and tradeoffs differ by model. Android Help explains the general approach.

Reduce avoidable radio and heavy-use drain
Turn off Bluetooth or location when you do not need them, and use Wi-Fi when it is available and practical. Avoid prolonged hotspot or tethering use, navigation, video, camera sessions, and graphics-heavy games when conserving a low charge. These tasks can keep radios, the screen, or the processor active. Do not disable a connection or service you rely on just to follow a blanket rule: the savings come with a loss of access or convenience. Android Help and Motorola’s battery guide cover these kinds of usage choices.
Protect long-term battery health without confusing it with daily runtime
Keep the phone cool and avoid unnecessary heat exposure. Google Android Help warns that a battery drains much faster when hot, even when the phone is not in use, and that heat can damage the battery: Get the most life from your Android device’s battery. You do not need to cycle the battery from full to zero to teach the phone its capacity.

Some models also offer charging features intended to support battery lifespan. Supported Pixel phones have Adaptive Charging or an 80% charging limit; the limit prioritizes long-term battery health but leaves less charge available for that day. Supported Motorola phones offer Optimized Charging. These options are model-specific and are not universal Android settings or a way to increase runtime from a single charge. Check your phone maker’s instructions: Google Pixel Help and Motorola Support.
Troubleshoot drain that does not improve
- Review Battery usage. Look for an app or feature that is unusually active or changed around the time the problem began. If appropriate, update it or adjust its background use.
- Restart the phone. Then install available Android system and app updates. Google includes restarting and updating among its troubleshooting steps in Android Help.
- Get model-specific help. If the drain continues, contact the manufacturer’s support for your exact model. Battery behavior and available settings depend on the device.
- Leave a factory reset until last. Back up first: resetting removes phone data and uninstalls apps and their associated data. Use the manufacturer’s guidance for your model before proceeding.
If the phone is old or the battery is physically damaged, ask the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider whether diagnosis or replacement is appropriate for that model. The right repair and compatible part cannot be determined without the exact device and its condition.
