To make a Windows laptop last longer between charges, start with Windows’ power-saving mode, then reduce screen brightness and the time the display stays on. Check which apps are using the most battery before limiting background activity, and turn off wireless connections only when you do not need them. These changes reduce power use; they do not restore battery capacity lost through wear.
Start with Windows power-saving controls
Set Power mode to Best power efficiency
- In Windows 11: Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Under Power mode, select Best power efficiency when running on battery. The setting’s availability and exact options can depend on your device and manufacturer. Microsoft describes the available modes in its power-mode guidance.
If the Power mode selector is missing, a custom power plan may be selected. Open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options and choose Balanced, then check Settings again. Menu names and availability may vary across Windows releases and hardware.

Turn on Energy saver or Battery saver
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery and turn on Energy saver. Depending on your release, you can enable it immediately or set it to turn on at a chosen battery level. Microsoft calls Battery saver the easiest way to extend battery life in its battery-saving tips. Older Windows 11 interfaces and Windows 10 use different labels or paths.
Energy saver reduces some system and background activity, so apps may update less often. That can mean fewer timely notifications or other background conveniences.

Reduce display power use
Lower brightness and shorten display timers
- Lower screen brightness to the dimmest level that remains comfortable to read.
- In Settings > System > Power & battery, shorten the times for turning the screen off and putting the device to sleep when it is on battery.
- If your laptop offers a content-adaptive brightness setting, leaving it enabled can help save power; Microsoft notes that disabling it can shorten battery life. See its Windows display guidance.
Consider refresh rate, HDR, and screen type
A lower refresh rate can use less power, though scrolling and motion may look less smooth. Some Windows 11 laptops support dynamic refresh rate, which can adjust the rate automatically. HDR video playback on battery can reduce runtime, according to Microsoft’s battery-saving guidance.
A dark theme or background may help on OLED displays, but the benefit should not be assumed for every screen technology. Likewise, avoid disabling content-adaptive brightness in pursuit of savings: Microsoft describes that feature as a power-saving option.

Find apps and connections using battery
Check battery use before restricting apps
- Go to Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Open Battery usage and look for apps with notable use.
- For an app that supports background-activity controls, try Power optimized first. Microsoft recommends this option for supported apps in its background activity guidance.
Set an app to Never only if you are willing to miss its background updates or notifications. Not every app offers the same controls.
Turn off radios only when you do not need them
When you do not need a network connection or Bluetooth accessory, switch off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, or use Airplane mode. These are situational savings: they also disconnect the services and devices that rely on those radios.

Adjust video playback and syncing if they matter to your use
- Video: Windows offers playback options such as Optimize for battery life and playing at a lower resolution on battery. Lower resolution can reduce image quality; choose it only when that trade-off is acceptable.
- Email and account syncing: Reduce how often mail syncs or limit which account data syncs if you can tolerate slower updates.
These settings are most useful when video playback or frequent syncing is part of what is draining the battery; they need not be changed if those trade-offs are not worthwhile.

- Reminder: (1) It is best not to completely drain the battery when charging.Discharge the new battery to 5%, then charge and cycle 3-4 times to fully charge the new battery. (2) Remember to fully discharge and charge every other month to extend battery life. (3) Remember not to connect the adapter for a long time when using the battery. It may damage the battery. (4) Avoid using batteries in environments with high or low temperatures, to avoid personal safety.
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
powercfg /batteryreport. - Open the HTML report at the file location reported by the command. Review Installed battery, Recent usage, and Battery usage.
The report can help distinguish heavy power use from reduced battery capacity, but it does not define a universal replacement threshold. Short runtime alone does not prove the battery needs replacing: workload, display settings, and apps can also make a charge run down quickly. Microsoft notes that a severely deteriorated battery may provide very short runtime; its battery-care guidance explains the report and battery condition.
Take swelling seriously
If the battery is swollen so that it extends beyond the laptop’s enclosure, stop using the device. Do not press on or puncture the battery. Microsoft identifies swelling beyond the enclosure as a safety warning in its battery-care guidance.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 menu differences
The paths above primarily describe Windows 11; Windows 10 uses different menu labels and Battery saver wording. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Its power-mode page covers both versions, but do not assume Windows 10 still receives ordinary free updates or security fixes.
The exact controls available can also vary with a Windows release, laptop hardware, and manufacturer configuration. Microsoft’s guidance does not give a universal number of extra minutes or hours for these changes: the result depends on the device and how it is used.
