To make a Surface Laptop last longer between charges, find the apps using the most power, then reduce screen use and choose a more efficient power mode when your work allows it. Start in Windows 11 at Settings > System > Power & battery; the exact options can vary by device and Windows version.
Find what is draining the battery
Before changing settings, check which apps are using power. Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage. Review the last 24 hours and select a high-use hour to spot apps consuming more power than expected. Microsoft explains the feature in its Windows battery guidance.

- Close apps you are not using.
- If an app starts automatically, open Task Manager and disable it under Startup apps if you do not need it at startup.
- Windows may offer background-activity controls for some apps. Avoid limiting an app if you depend on its notifications or syncing.
Apply Windows energy recommendations
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations. Windows may suggest changes to brightness, screen behavior, or sleep timing. Apply recommendations individually: a dimmer screen or earlier sleep can conserve power, but may not suit how you work. See Microsoft’s Energy recommendations guidance.

In Settings > System > Power & battery, choose a mode oriented toward efficiency when the Surface is unplugged and your workload permits it. Windows presents power mode as a balance among battery life, balanced use, and performance. The available choices depend on the PC and its hardware support; Microsoft notes that the setting may not be available on every device. A demanding task may run more slowly in a more efficient mode. Use Energy saver when you need more unplugged time
Windows 11 Energy saver can be turned on manually or configured to switch on below a chosen battery level. Microsoft says it manages system processes and power use; some background functions may be limited. Use it for longer stretches away from an outlet, particularly when you do not need every background task to stay active. It is a way to reduce consumption, not a promise of a fixed runtime increase. Reduce display and idle power use
Lower brightness to a comfortable level, and shorten the time before the screen turns off or the laptop sleeps while on battery. Find these settings at Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep. Microsoft includes display and inactivity settings among its energy recommendations.

Some Surface models also adjust brightness or contrast according to the content shown to conserve power. Microsoft says disabling this content-adaptive feature can reduce battery life. Its controls differ between Intel- and AMD-based Surface devices, so use the model-specific instructions in Microsoft’s content-adaptive brightness and contrast guidance rather than following a graphics-control recipe for a different model.

Check updates if battery drain is sudden or persistent
If the drain began recently, check Battery usage again for an app that changed its behavior, and check for available updates. Open the Surface app and use Help & support to check update status; when appropriate, open Windows Update. Microsoft’s Surface battery guidance covers update checks. Updates are maintenance and troubleshooting, not a guaranteed way to increase runtime.

What to expect from these changes
There is no dependable number of extra hours or percentage gain that applies to every Surface Laptop. Microsoft says actual battery life varies significantly with the Surface device, workload, network and feature configuration, signal strength, settings, and other factors. High-demand tasks can use power faster. Treat these changes as ways to curb avoidable consumption, not as a model-independent runtime guarantee. A compatible power bank can add carried charge, but it does not extend the Surface’s internal battery runtime. Check the exact Surface Laptop model before buying: some models accept USB-C charging, while Surface Laptop (1st Gen) and Surface Laptop 2 are listed as Surface Connect-only. Required wattage also varies by model. Consult Microsoft’s Surface charging-accessory compatibility table and use a USB-C Power Delivery charger with the wattage specified for that model. Microsoft recommends its own or Microsoft-licensed charging accessories; see its power-supply and charging guidance.

Microsoft’s statement that a device can charge “up to 80% in about an hour” describes charging speed, not the number of hours the laptop will run. It applies to most devices under specified conditions, including an ambient temperature of 25°C (77°F) and adequate power. Check the charging guidance for the conditions and model details.
