The exact settings depend on your phone model and Android version, and no single change guarantees a specific number of extra hours.
Choose a refresh rate that fits the day
A higher refresh rate can make scrolling and animations look smoother, but a fixed high-refresh setting can use more power. The labels and options vary by manufacturer, so search Settings for “refresh rate,” “motion smoothness,” or “display” if the paths below do not match your phone.

Samsung Galaxy
Open Settings and search for Motion smoothness. Choose Adaptive for a balance or Standard to favor runtime. Samsung describes Adaptive as dynamically adjusting the rate up to 120 Hz on supported devices. The precise options depend on the model; see Samsung Canada’s Galaxy display-settings guidance and Samsung US’s refresh-rate guidance.
Google Pixel
On supported models, go to Settings > Display & touch > Smooth Display and turn it off to save battery. Menu availability varies with Pixel model and Android version. Google documents the path in its Pixel battery guidance.

Other Android phones
Use the Settings search field to find the refresh-rate control. Adaptive is a reasonable everyday compromise if offered; a lower fixed rate is the more direct choice when runtime takes priority. Android 15 includes platform support for adaptive refresh on enabled devices, allowing lower default frame rates and matching the refresh rate to rendered content, but device implementation and enablement matter. Details are in Android Developers’ adaptive refresh rate documentation.
Reduce display drain beyond refresh rate
- Lower brightness: Set it to a comfortable, readable level. Adaptive brightness can help if it works well in your surroundings.
- Shorten screen timeout: A shorter delay means the display spends less time on after you stop using the phone. Google gives 30 seconds as a Pixel example, not a universal setting.
- Consider Dark theme: Android and Pixel guidance lists it as a battery-saving option, but the effect depends on the device and display; do not assume a major saving on every phone.

Find the apps using the most battery
Check battery use before restricting apps; a short list of high-use apps is more actionable than limiting everything in the background.
Pixel
Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage to review apps, then inspect or change background use for an app listed there. Google recommends leaving battery usage set to Optimized for all apps. Restrict an app selectively: doing so can interfere with timely background updates or notifications, especially for messaging and navigation apps. See Google’s Pixel battery instructions.

Review battery usage details and screen-on and screen-off time in your device’s battery settings. Menu labels vary by model, carrier, and software version; Samsung’s Galaxy battery guidance explains its available controls.
Use Battery Saver when its limits make sense
Battery Saver is useful when the charge is low or you need the phone to last longer before the next charge. Android Battery Saver can limit or turn off background activity, may turn on Dark theme, and can delay some apps, features, network connections, and notifications. Samsung likewise warns that Power saving can affect performance and delay app updates or notifications. Turn it on when those interruptions are an acceptable tradeoff, rather than expecting it to preserve every app’s normal behavior. See Google’s Android battery guidance and Samsung’s Galaxy guidance.

Cut back on demanding use only when needed
Some activities can drain a charge quickly, but there is no need to disable useful features all the time. When trying to stretch a low battery, consider pausing or shortening prolonged navigation, video streaming, graphics-heavy games, camera use, hotspot or tethering, and GPS use. Calls while moving and highly interactive games can also be demanding. Turn off a hotspot when you are not using it. Google lists these examples in its Pixel battery guidance.

Heat can make a battery drain faster, including when the phone is not in use, and can damage it. Keep the phone from getting excessively hot, and follow the manufacturer’s charging advice. Google recommends using the power adapter supplied with the phone and consulting the manufacturer for model-specific charger guidance. There is no need to teach a battery its capacity by repeatedly draining it from full to zero.
