For clearer live-stream audio, fix the microphone and its levels first, balance speech against other sounds, and add processing only to address a specific problem. Then make a test recording or private test stream and listen to the full mix before going live.
Diagnose the sound before changing settings
Listen for the problem you actually have: a quiet voice, distortion, voice buried under game or music audio, background noise, echo, or doubled call audio. These symptoms have different causes. Adding filters before identifying the cause can make speech sound worse without fixing the underlying issue.

- Quiet voice: Check microphone placement and gain at the microphone, operating system, and streaming application.
- Distortion or harsh peaks: Check for clipping and reduce the level feeding the stream.
- Voice hard to understand: Balance voice against music, game sound, alerts, and other sources by listening to the combined mix.
- Echo or doubled voices: Check speakers, headphones, and whether call audio is captured through more than one route.
- Room or computer noise: Check the microphone’s position and what it is picking up before applying noise processing.
Set up the microphone and gain
Start at the microphone
Place the microphone where it captures your voice clearly, then use its physical gain control if it has one. Speak at the volume and distance you expect to use during the stream while watching your streaming software’s audio meter. OBS recommends checking the microphone and its controls first, then the operating system and application, and monitoring the signal in OBS. See the OBS Audio Mixer Guide.

Check each control in the signal path
If the input is still too quiet, or its level changes unexpectedly, check the operating-system input level and the selected input and level in your streaming application. Make sure the application is listening to the intended microphone. If you change a level, speak again and monitor the result; do not rely on a setting number without listening.

A USB microphone can be an option if the existing microphone does not capture your voice adequately, but buying a different microphone does not by itself correct poor placement, room noise, or an unsuitable gain level.
Set levels that leave headroom
In digital audio, 0 dBFS is the maximum representable level. If the final stream or recording reaches or exceeds it, the signal can clip and distort. Watch the meters and listen to a recording to check that peaks stay below that limit. OBS explains the meter conventions and headroom in its Audio Mixer Technical Details; its meter guidance is practical advice, not a universal loudness standard.

Balance the mix by listening
Adjust your voice and other sources while listening to them together. Microphones may naturally meter lower than computer-generated audio, so identical meter bars are not the goal. OBS’s guide places speech toward the upper yellow region and background music and effects in the green region as practical meter-reading guidance. The voice still needs to be understandable over the rest of the mix; lower game sound, music, or alerts if they mask it.

Use filters only to solve a specific problem
Compressor: control peaks
A compressor can reduce peaks above its threshold and restore level after the peak. It may help when speaking volume varies or occasional loud moments jump out, but it does not correct a noisy room or a microphone that is simply set too low. Make a small change, speak normally and loudly, and compare a recording with and without the filter. See OBS’s Compressor Filter guide.
Expander: reduce low-level sound
An expander reduces low-level sound. It can also cut off quiet syllables or word endings if set too aggressively. Adjust it while listening to real speech, including softer words and pauses, and check a recording before using it on a live broadcast. OBS describes the control in its Expander Filter guide.

- Tap-to-Mute with LED Indicator: Control your mic with a simple tap. Red LED on when live, off when muted.
Do not stack filters just because they are available. If processing makes the voice less natural, clips word beginnings, or obscures quiet speech, reduce or remove it and revisit the source level and room setup.

Find and fix echo or doubled call audio
Stop room audio returning to the microphone
If stream or call audio is playing through room speakers and entering the microphone, use headphones for monitoring instead. Headphones are especially useful when you need to hear other people without sending their voices back into the microphone.

Check call controls and routing
For Twitch Stream Together specifically, check its input gain, noise suppression, and echo-cancellation controls. Also check whether call audio reaches the stream through both a browser source and desktop-audio capture; capturing the same sound twice can produce doubled audio. Twitch’s instructions are for its Stream Together feature, not a universal guide to every routing setup: How to Use Stream Together.
For other call or streaming setups, trace which application or source sends the call audio to the stream and remove any duplicate route. Change one route at a time and listen to a test recording.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Rehearse the complete stream before broadcasting
- Make a test recording or private test stream. Use the microphone, game or other computer audio, music, alerts, and call setup you plan to use.
- Include realistic activity. Speak at your normal volume and include the movement or louder moments expected in the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream in its live encoder settings guidance.
- Listen to the result. Check voice clarity, distortion, balance, room noise, echo, and any doubled audio. OBS also recommends recording and listening back; see its Audio Mixer Guide.
- Correct one cause at a time. Adjust placement, gain, source balance, or a relevant filter, then record and listen again so you can tell what helped.
- Monitor stream health once live. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the event, as its encoder guidance recommends.
Common audio problems and what to check
| What you hear | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Voice is too quiet | Microphone placement or gain at the device, operating system, or application | Adjust the source first, speak at stream volume, and monitor the meter and playback. |
| Voice sounds distorted | Signal peaks reaching or exceeding 0 dBFS in the final stream or recording | Lower the level feeding the stream and verify with the meter and a recording. |
| Game or music covers speech | Other sources are too loud relative to the microphone | Listen to the mix and lower masking sources; do not try to make every meter match. |
| Quiet words disappear | An expander may be too aggressive | Reduce or remove the expansion and test with softer real speech. |
| Echo from speakers | Stream or call audio is audible to the microphone | Monitor with headphones instead of room speakers. |
| Call voices sound doubled | The call may be routed through more than one captured source | Check browser-source and desktop-audio capture and remove the duplicate route. |
