How to Improve at Parrying, Dodging, and Counterattacking in Soulslike Games

Improve your Soulslike defense by reading the full attack sequence, choosing a game-specific response, and counterattacking only when the opening is clear.

To improve at parrying, dodging, and counterattacking, read the enemy’s whole attack before choosing your response, then punish only when the sequence leaves a clear opening. There is no single Soulslike timing window: an Elden Ring shield parry and a Sekiro deflection use different inputs and carry different risks. The transferable skill is deliberate observation, not pressing the same button at the same moment in every game.

Why panic inputs make defense harder

When a fight feels fast, it is tempting to mash dodge, hold guard, or swing as soon as an enemy pauses. Those reactions can turn a readable move into a hit. In Elden Ring, Bandai Namco’s official combat guide explains that actions commit and inputs can be queued; repeated dodge presses may carry into another action or move. If you roll too early, you can be recovering when the attack actually lands. If you keep rolling, you may spend stamina and run into a follow-up.

Instead, watch the windup and the complete sequence. Ask whether the enemy is making one attack or several, whether the hit is aimed at your current position, and whether the enemy continues after the first strike. Choose one response, make that input deliberately, and stop pressing buttons long enough to see what happens next.

Choose a defense for the attack, not the habit

Dodging, blocking, parrying, and counterattacking solve different problems. The right choice depends on the game’s rules and the specific move; a successful defense in one system does not imply the same timing, cost, or reward in another.

Defense Example and cue What it can do What to watch for
Dodge In Elden Ring, time the roll to the incoming hit rather than rolling repeatedly during the windup. Dodge invulnerability frames can avoid damage completely, according to Bandai Namco’s combat guide. Early rolls can leave you in recovery at impact; repeated inputs can use stamina or carry you into a follow-up. The guide gives no universal frame count.
Block In Elden Ring, raise a shield to receive an attack; in Sekiro, guard is also the input used to attempt a deflection. Blocking can protect you, but in Elden Ring it spends stamina. In Sekiro, holding guard is safer in some situations than deflecting, but builds more player posture damage. A block is not automatically a safe opening to attack. Consider whether the enemy’s sequence has ended and whether your defensive resource or posture is under pressure.
Parry or deflect Elden Ring’s shield parry is a timed counter-swing; Sekiro’s deflection is made by pressing guard just before impact. An Elden Ring parry can knock away an enemy weapon and open a critical attack. A Sekiro deflection damages enemy posture. Not every attack is a suitable parry target. The cue, input, and failure penalty depend on the game and move.
Counterattack In Elden Ring, use a heavy attack after a successful block for a guard counter. In Sekiro, quickly attack after a successful deflection for a counter-slash. These attacks can turn a defense into pressure or damage. A follow-up may still be coming. Counter only when the sequence or stagger gives you a safe opening.

How to dodge without rolling into the next hit

In Elden Ring, a dodge roll can use invulnerability frames to avoid damage, while a stationary backstep has only minor invulnerability, according to Bandai Namco’s official combat guide. That is a reason to learn the particular attack rather than assume every evasive movement works the same way. The guide does not give a frame count, and exact timing should not be generalized across moves, equipment load, controls, or games.

Read the windup and the recovery

Let the enemy begin its attack so you can identify its direction and timing. Roll for the hit, then release the dodge input and observe whether the enemy has another strike queued in the sequence. Rolling at the first hint of danger may be too early; rolling again without reading the follow-up may leave you exposed or out of stamina.

Use movement alternatives selectively

Bandai Namco notes that strafing can sometimes avoid thrust attacks, though it is less reliable than dodging. Treat it as an option to test against a recognizable move, not as a universal substitute for rolling. The guide also notes that jumping can avoid some attacks, but whether that is useful depends on the move.

Parrying in Elden Ring and deflecting in Sekiro are different skills

Both reward acting on an attack cue, but the systems are not interchangeable. Bandai Namco’s Elden Ring combat guide describes a shield parry as a timed counter-swing: watching the enemy hand begin moving toward you can help identify the cue, while pressing too early or too late leaves you open to a hit. The guide says small shields are better at parrying than medium shields. A successful parry can knock an enemy’s weapon away and create a critical-attack opportunity; it does not mean every enemy or attack can be parried.

In Sekiro, press guard just before impact to attempt a deflection. Activision Support’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Game Mechanics guide (March 22, 2019) explains that deflecting attacks and attacking both build enemy posture. Simply holding guard can be safer in some situations, but it causes more posture damage to your character than a successful deflection. Against a multi-hit string, read and deflect the individual blows instead of assuming one press will cover the entire sequence.

The Sekiro guide also describes a quick counter-slash after a successful deflection. That follow-up is specific to Sekiro’s combat system; do not transfer its timing or button logic to another game. Neither the reviewed Elden Ring nor Sekiro guide provides a universal frame or millisecond window for these actions.

Counter only when the opening is real

Elden Ring: guard counter after a block

A guard counter is a heavy attack immediately after a successful block. Bandai Namco’s combat guide says it can inflict substantial stance damage and lead to a critical opening, but warns that an enemy follow-up can interrupt a careless counter. Block first, then check whether the enemy’s sequence has ended or the block has made it stagger. If the foe is still attacking, keep defending rather than treating the block itself as permission to swing.

Sekiro: counter-slash after a deflection

After a successful deflection, a quick attack performs a counter-slash and adds pressure to the enemy’s posture. Posture is not always the only thing to manage: Activision Support explains that enemy vitality affects posture recovery. If an enemy recovers posture very quickly, reduce its vitality before relying on posture pressure alone. When its posture breaks, the deathblow opening is limited, so take it promptly.

Return to observation after one punish

A useful combat loop is to attack cautiously until the opponent responds, stop attacking to read that response, defend against the full sequence, and try one measured punish. Watch for the moment the enemy regains initiative before deciding to attack again. This is a way to apply the mechanics above, not a universal in-game rule.

A focused routine for learning one move

  1. Choose a repeatable encounter. Use an ordinary enemy, a tutorial, or a practice opponent. In Sekiro, PlayStation Blog identifies Hanbei the Infested at the Dilapidated Temple as a sparring partner.
  2. Observe before optimizing damage. Watch the enemy’s tell, the attack’s range, whether it is a single hit or a string, and what the enemy does immediately afterward.
  3. Pick one defense that fits the move. Decide whether to roll, block, parry or deflect, sidestep, or use another option supported by that game. Do not change several inputs at once while learning the cue.
  4. Wait for the sequence to finish. After defending, look for a clear recovery or stagger. Try one safe punish rather than automatically committing to a full combo.
  5. Change one variable on the next attempt. If the defense failed, adjust when you act or which defense you chose, then observe the result. Once the cue is recognizable, test the decision against a different move.

This routine applies official advice to study enemy movement and practice timing; the cited game guides do not claim that this exact regimen has been experimentally validated. For a broader reminder that deliberate observation is not unique to one combat system, Sébastien Di Ruzza, Gameplay Manager at Spiders, discusses studying opponents and finding their weaknesses in PlayStation Blog’s Steelrising combat system breakdown (September 1, 2022).

What transfers between games—and what does not

Careful observation, patience, and waiting for a real recovery are useful habits across action games. The timing cue, stamina or posture cost, eligible attacks, and reward for a successful defense remain game-specific. Before applying a learned response to a new game, check its own tutorial or manual and test the move on a repeatable opponent. A familiar animation or button does not guarantee familiar rules.
