If an iOS beta is causing trouble, first check whether you have a backup from before installing it. Turning beta updates off prevents future beta updates but does not remove the beta already on your iPhone. Apple’s removal process erases the iPhone and reinstalls the current public iOS using a computer, so you’ll need a compatible pre-beta backup to restore your personal data afterward.
Before you remove the beta, check your backups
Look for an archived backup made before you installed the beta. A backup created while the iPhone was running beta software may not restore to an earlier public iOS version. Apple does not describe turning off beta updates as a way to downgrade or preserve the data on the installed system. Apple’s beta removal instructions explain the supported removal process.

If you can still use the iPhone, make a current backup as an additional safeguard, but do not rely on a beta-era backup as the one you will restore after downgrading. Preserve any archived pre-beta backup rather than overwriting or deleting it. If possible, keep both an iCloud backup and a computer backup.

| Backup method | Where it is stored and access | Encryption and data coverage |
|---|---|---|
| iCloud | Stored in iCloud; made over Wi-Fi. | Always encrypted. Data already synced to iCloud, such as Photos or Messages when those sync features are enabled, is not included in the backup. |
| Mac or PC | Stored on the computer; available space depends on that computer. | Encryption is optional and off by default. An encrypted backup is required for Health, Activity, and Keychain data. Items already synced to iCloud and certain synced or purchased content are not included. |
These are not complete copies of every item on the iPhone in every configuration. Check separately that important synced content is available in its service. Apple describes the differences in How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

Choose whether to stop beta updates or remove the installed beta
Stop receiving future beta updates
If you only want to stop future betas, you can turn beta updates off without removing the iOS version already installed. On iOS 16.4 or later, open Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates and choose Off. On iOS 16.3.1 or earlier, Apple directs users to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management, select the beta software profile, and remove it. If beta software was installed using a computer, Apple says a restore is needed to remove it. These steps are from Apple’s beta removal guidance.
Remove the beta and return to public iOS
Removing the installed beta using Apple’s supported process erases the iPhone. You need an up-to-date Mac or the current Apple Devices app on Windows, plus a suitable connection between the computer and phone. The computer installs the current non-beta iOS; you can then restore data from a compatible backup.

Restore from iCloud
- Begin at the iPhone’s Hello screen and continue through setup to Transfer Your Apps & Data.
- Choose From iCloud Backup, sign in to your Apple Account, and select the backup by date and size.
- Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi while the restore runs. Initial progress may take minutes to an hour; apps and other content can continue downloading in the background for hours or days, depending on the amount of data.
If the iPhone is already set up, Apple says you must erase it before restoring from an iCloud backup.
Restore from a Mac or PC backup
- Open Finder on a supported Mac or Apple Devices on Windows. Use iTunes for Windows setups without Apple Devices, or for macOS Mojave and earlier.
- Connect the iPhone, select it in the computer app, and choose Restore Backup.
- Select the relevant archived backup. Enter its password if it is encrypted.
- Keep the iPhone connected until the restore and sync finish.
Apple’s computer-backup restore process also targets a new or newly erased iPhone. If the device is already set up, follow Apple’s restore instructions for the steps required before restoring.
Troubleshoot a failed computer restore
A restore error can have several causes, including a connection to Apple’s servers, outdated computer software, a USB connection problem, or possible hardware trouble. Note the exact error number or message and follow the matching steps in Apple’s update and restore error guidance; not every failure is caused by the cable.
Quick Recap
- Install current software on the Mac or PC.
- For a listed USB connection error, try the cable supplied with the device or another Apple-certified cable, then try a different USB port.
- If the problem continues, try a different computer.
- Use a connector that fits both the iPhone and the computer; a new cable is only relevant if your existing connection is unsuitable or produces a USB error.
