For ASP.NET Core gRPC over HTTP/2, do not start by disabling compression or transport encryption. The available guidance does not establish that either change is a general throughput fix, and Microsoft recommends TLS for production. Reuse channels, find queueing and flow-control bottlenecks, and benchmark representative traffic before changing compression or payload architecture.
First identify which overhead is limiting the stream
“Stream compression” can mean application-level compression, while encryption here means transport security through TLS. They are separate concerns. The guidance discussed in this article applies specifically to ASP.NET Core gRPC over HTTP/2; it is not a universal prescription for media streams, other RPC stacks, or every streaming runtime.

Measure a representative workload before tuning: include its payload sizes and compressibility, latency, concurrency, connection topology, CPU use, wire bytes, and end-to-end latency. The cited Microsoft guidance does not provide a controlled benchmark showing that disabling compression improves throughput for a particular payload or runtime. It likewise does not recommend removing production TLS as a performance optimization.

Remove avoidable connection setup work
Reuse gRPC channels
A gRPC channel can multiplex calls over an existing HTTP/2 connection. Creating a new channel for each call can repeat setup work, including socket opening, TCP establishment, TLS negotiation, and HTTP/2 startup. Reuse channels for repeated calls rather than paying that cost on every call, as described in Microsoft’s ASP.NET Core gRPC performance guidance.

Check stream-limit queueing before raising limits
HTTP/2 connections limit concurrent streams. Once active calls reach the configured limit, additional calls can queue at the client. Microsoft notes that many servers use a default maximum of 100 concurrent streams, but this is a general observation, not a guarantee for a particular deployment. Inspect the actual client and server configuration. The client option EnableMultipleHttp2Connections is one setting to consider when calls queue at a connection’s limit.
Simply raising the server’s stream limit is not automatically beneficial: more concurrent calls can introduce thread contention, and packet loss on a shared TCP connection can block calls that share it. Confirm that the limit is the bottleneck and test the effect under realistic concurrency before changing it.

Choose unary calls or streaming for the workload
Bidirectional streaming can be more efficient than repeated unary calls once a stream is established: messages reuse the existing HTTP/2 request rather than starting a new request for each message. It may suit regular worker messages or workloads where measurements show request setup is a bottleneck and low latency or high throughput matters.
Streaming also changes the failure and concurrency model. An interrupted stream may need to be restarted, and a request stream permits only one write at a time, so applications with multiple producers must coordinate writes. Use streaming when its steady-state savings justify that recovery and coordination work—not merely because the workload is described as a stream.

Tune flow control with memory use in view
HTTP/2 flow control limits how much data can be received at once. If the window is small relative to incoming messages, or the network has notable latency, a transfer may arrive in stop-start bursts. Kestrel exposes connection- and stream-window settings; Microsoft advises that the connection window be at least as large as the stream window.
Larger windows may reduce pauses by allowing more data to be buffered, but that can increase memory use. Treat published configuration examples as examples, not universal production values. Change windows only after measurements indicate flow control is limiting the workload, and assess both throughput and memory under expected concurrency.

Handle large binary messages deliberately
gRPC and Protobuf are message-oriented: a complete message is loaded into memory for sending and receiving. For very large binary transfers, compare two alternatives against the actual workload:
Recommended Free Tools
- Chunk the transfer across streamed messages. This retains gRPC while avoiding one oversized message, but requires application-level handling of chunks.
- Use an HTTP endpoint that reads or writes the request or response body stream directly. This can avoid whole-message buffering, but is an architectural alternative to evaluate rather than a claim that HTTP is always faster.
The relevant trade-off is message allocation and buffering versus the complexity and behavior of the alternative; benchmark with representative payloads.

Keep TLS enabled in production
Microsoft recommends secured ports for production gRPC services. Its troubleshooting guidance describes HTTP/2 without TLS as a development workaround and warns that messages sent this way are unencrypted. A private network alone does not settle the security question if traffic between applications is sent without encryption. See the gRPC security guidance and gRPC troubleshooting guidance.
TLS also matters operationally: when an endpoint supports multiple protocols, TLS enables ALPN negotiation. An HTTP/2 endpoint without TLS must be configured as HTTP/2-only; an unsecured endpoint configured for both HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2 cannot use TLS ALPN negotiation and defaults to HTTP/1.1, which prevents gRPC calls from working. This is a configuration caveat, not a reason to remove production security. Consult Microsoft’s ASP.NET Core gRPC hosting documentation.
Benchmark compression rather than assuming it is costly
Compression and TLS are distinct layers, and the cited Microsoft performance guidance does not establish that disabling stream compression improves throughput. Compression can only be judged in context: compare representative payloads while tracking CPU use, bytes sent over the network, and latency. Keep TLS in production during that comparison so the results reflect the deployment you intend to operate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAccount for load balancing and long-lived streams
A layer-4 load balancer distributes TCP connections, while HTTP/2 multiplexes calls over each connection. Calls on one connection therefore go to the same endpoint, and an established streaming call remains on that endpoint. Microsoft’s performance guidance discusses client-side and layer-7 proxy load balancing as approaches for gRPC. When scaling, consider how long-lived streams are placed and how that affects distribution across endpoints.
Check the gRPC variant before applying guidance
The points above concern traditional gRPC over HTTP/2, which supports client-, server-, and bidirectional streaming. gRPC-Web has more limited streaming support, including browser-client limitations for client-streaming and bidirectional methods. The cited gRPC-Web documentation is versioned for ASP.NET Core 7; check support for the platform and version actually deployed.
