If Batman: Arkham Knight starts stuttering, running at lower FPS, crashing, or showing visual glitches after you install mods, first disable the newest mod and compare the game in the same scene. Then check for shader conflicts, custom graphics or INI changes, and overlays—one change at a time. The right fix depends on whether the problem is a shader conflict, traversal stutter, storage streaming, or a crash; there is no universal FPS fix.
Start by identifying the performance problem
“Arkham Knight stuttering after installing mods,” “low FPS with mods,” and “crashing after downloading a mod” describe different problems. A slowdown in average FPS is not the same as a brief hitch while driving through the city, and neither necessarily explains a crash on launch.

- Average FPS drop: The game runs slower across a scene than it did before the mod.
- Traversal stutter: Brief pauses or hitches occur while moving through the city or loading assets.
- Crash: The game exits or fails to launch, possibly after a particular mod or overlay is added.
- Visual issue: Lighting, exposure, or effects look wrong, even if performance is otherwise acceptable.
Write down the symptom, where it happens, the last mod you installed, and any settings you changed. Use the same save and scene for comparisons so that changing locations or gameplay does not muddy the result.

Disable the newest mod and establish a baseline
- Back up saves and edited configuration files. Keep copies somewhere outside the game folder before changing files or removing mods.
- Disable or remove the last mod you added. If the problem began after installing a preset, disable that preset first.
- Rerun the same scene. Compare the same location and activity, noting whether the original symptom returns or improves.
- Reintroduce changes one at a time. If you use several mods or settings tweaks, add them back individually and retest after each change.
This reversible test is more useful than applying several “FPS fixes” at once: it helps identify whether the slowdown is linked to a specific mod or configuration change.

Check ReShade and ENB conflicts
If the problem began after adding a shader injector or visual preset, check that specific mod’s compatibility notes. The Filmic Shaders page on Nexus Mods says its preset is incompatible with other ReShade presets and ENB. Its author says it should work with skins and gameplay enhancements, but does not guarantee compatibility with every mod.
That same page offers a performance version. Its author says it can save up to 15 FPS at times; this is the author’s claim, not independent testing or a gain to expect on every PC. The author also warns that the version heavily changes effects and does not preserve the original look. Treat it as a visual trade-off, not a guaranteed performance upgrade.
Restore graphics tweaks and test overlays
If you edited INI files or used a third-party graphics/configuration tool, restore the changes to defaults and retest. The Steam community troubleshooting guide also recommends temporarily disabling overlay programs, such as FPS counters or recording software, to see whether they contribute to the issue. These are community troubleshooting suggestions, not proof that a particular tweak or overlay is the cause.
Test one adjustment at a time. If you disable overlays, turn off only the relevant third-party overlay first, then compare the same scene. Avoid changing several settings simultaneously: if the issue changes, you will not know which adjustment mattered.

Consider Arkham Quixote for persistent traversal stutter
Arkham Quixote is a community-reported option for traversal performance. The Steam guide says it may help by recycling textures, but it can use more VRAM. It is a conditional experiment rather than a general low-FPS or crash fix.
- NVIDIA GameWorks effects cannot be used with it, according to the guide.
- Overlays other than Steam may cause the game to crash, according to the guide.
- Some areas may have exposure issues.
Those caveats matter especially if you already rely on GameWorks effects, use third-party overlays, or are troubleshooting a visual problem rather than traversal stutter. If you test it, compare the same route and be ready to disable it if the trade-offs outweigh any improvement.
When an SSD may help—and when it will not
An SSD is worth considering only when the symptom plausibly involves asset streaming or storage, such as hitches during traversal. In its PC performance guidance published June 23, 2015, WB Games said: “For users that have an SSD available, we’ve noted increased streaming performance when the game is installed to that type of drive.” This is a historical observation about streaming, not evidence that an SSD resolves shader conflicts, every FPS drop, or mod-related crashes.
Before moving or reinstalling the game, confirm that your PC can accept the drive and check the required form factor, interface, capacity, and available slot. An SSD involves a hardware change and potential purchase; first rule out reversible mod and settings conflicts.

What Arkham Knight’s official PC guidance says
WB Games’ June 2015 guidance advised against editing the game’s INI files, noting that changes could negatively affect performance and stability. It also urged players at the time to use then-current graphics drivers. Do not treat that dated post as a current driver-version recommendation.
The publisher’s October 2015 patch notes reported reduced frame-rate hitches, system-memory and VRAM optimizations, performance improvements across GPUs that required current drivers, and fixes for HDD hitches. These notes provide historical context: the game has had distinct hitching and storage-streaming issues, but they do not establish a best modern configuration or a universal fix for today’s mod combinations.
Choose a test based on the symptom
| Option | Best fit | Evidence and trade-off | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disable the newest mod or preset | Problems that begin immediately after adding a mod | Direct comparison can identify a mod-related change; the result depends on the mod and setup. | High: disable it and retest. |
| Check preset compatibility | Visual issues or performance changes after adding ReShade or ENB | Filmic Shaders’ author documents specific conflicts and a performance version with visual changes; the FPS claim is not independent testing. | High: remove or switch the preset. |
| Restore defaults and test overlays | Problems after configuration edits or while an overlay is active | Community troubleshooting advice; it does not establish a universal cause. | High: revert settings or turn overlays back on. |
| Try Arkham Quixote | Persistent traversal stutter after simpler checks | Community-reported potential benefit, with higher VRAM use and GameWorks, overlay, and exposure caveats. | Moderate: disable the mod if results or trade-offs are poor. |
| Install the game on an SSD | Hitches plausibly tied to asset streaming or storage | WB Games reported increased streaming performance in June 2015; that does not show that an SSD fixes other symptoms. | Lower: requires a compatible drive and moving or reinstalling the game. |
If the problem continues
Return to the last known-good setup, then retest with only the suspected mod enabled. Keep a short record of the mod name, symptom, scene, and changes tested. The exact next step depends on your PC, the symptom, and the mod list; the evidence above does not establish a single best settings combination for every system.
