To improve anime streaming picture quality on a PS5, first make sure the console is sending the TV its best supported signal, then set HDR to On When Supported, choose the streaming app’s highest quality option, and test the connection for instability. Those steps can prevent avoidable softness, dark HDR images and adaptive-quality drops.
They cannot create detail that is absent from the stream. The service, episode, subscription plan, app, TV, HDMI path and network determine the actual source quality. A PS5 can output a compatible 4K signal, but it cannot turn a 720p or 1080p anime master into native 4K.

What actually controls anime quality on a PS5
There are two separate resolutions to keep in mind. The streaming service delivers a video stream at whatever quality its title, plan, app and network conditions allow. The PS5 then decodes that stream and sends an output signal to the TV. Changing the console output to 4K changes the signal sent to the display; it does not upgrade a lower-resolution source.
Sony says the PS5 detects a TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution. That automatic choice still depends on a compatible 4K display, the correct HDMI connection and the rest of the home-theater setup. A 4K television can display a 4K output from the console, but the anime itself must also be available at an appropriate source quality for fine detail to be present.

Picture quality can therefore fail at several points:
- Source: The episode may only be offered in HD, or its original master may intentionally have soft line work, grain or other artistic characteristics.
- Subscription and title: A service may reserve Ultra HD or HDR for a particular plan and selected titles.
- App and player: Quality controls may be adaptive rather than fixed-resolution choices.
- Network: Congestion, Wi-Fi interference or competing traffic can make the player reduce its bitrate.
- Console and display: Output, HDR, HDMI and television settings can alter how the available signal looks.
Fixing the settings and connection removes avoidable losses. It does not guarantee that every anime series will be 4K or HDR.
Step 1: Check the PS5 video-output signal
Start with the signal the console is sending before changing app or television picture modes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Select Screen and Video, then Video Output.
- Review Current Video Output Signal, including the reported resolution and the connected HDMI device information.
- Leave Resolution on Automatic unless you have a specific reason to test a supported manual mode.
- On a compatible 4K television, confirm that a 2160p/4K output is available and selected when appropriate.
Menu wording can vary slightly by system software version and language. The important checks are the actual current signal and whether the TV is being identified correctly. If the console reports only 1080p on a 4K set, check that the PS5 is connected directly to a suitable HDMI input, that the television input is configured for enhanced or high-bandwidth signals when such a setting exists, and that an AV receiver or switch in the middle is not limiting the path.
Do not change several variables at once. Record the current signal, change one setting, then reopen the information screen. This makes it possible to tell whether a cable, receiver, TV input or console option is responsible for a difference.
What the output screen can and cannot tell you
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p/4K reported on a compatible 4K TV | The console-to-TV output path is negotiating a 4K signal. | Move on to HDR, app quality and network checks; this does not prove that the stream itself is 4K. |
| 1080p on a 4K TV | A display, HDMI input, intermediary device or setting may be limiting output. | Try a different compatible TV input, bypass an intermediary temporarily and recheck the signal. |
| Resolution changes during playback | The app may be adapting the stream, or the display path may be renegotiating. | Watch the app’s quality behavior and test the network; do not assume the PS5 is randomly lowering a fixed source. |
Step 2: Set HDR for mixed SDR and HDR anime
Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR. Use On When Supported as the safest starting point when you watch both HDR and standard-dynamic-range anime.

With this choice, supported HDR content can use HDR, while apps or titles that do not support HDR remain in SDR. Sony’s Always On mode converts non-HDR apps to HDR output. Conversion can look pleasing on one television and unnaturally bright, gray or oversaturated on another, so it is not an automatic quality upgrade.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If an HDR episode looks too dark, loses shadow detail or has clipped highlights, select Adjust HDR in the same video-output area and follow the three calibration screens. Adjust until the on-screen symbols are barely visible as instructed by the console. The result depends on the TV’s own HDR tone mapping and picture mode, so keep the television in its normal HDR mode while calibrating.
When to compare “Always On”
After establishing a baseline with On When Supported, you can briefly compare Always On with the same scene. Use a paused frame containing skin tones, bright clouds and dark line work. If converted HDR makes SDR anime look washed out or less natural, return to On When Supported. If you prefer the converted presentation on your TV, that is a viewing preference rather than evidence that more source detail has been created.
Step 3: Select the app’s highest available quality
Streaming services do not all expose the same controls. Choose the highest setting the service offers, then remember that adaptive playback can still change the bitrate.
Crunchyroll
In the Crunchyroll player, open the gear or playback settings menu and choose Highest when it is available. Crunchyroll documents three quality choices—Highest, Moderate and Data Saver—rather than promising a fixed 1080p or 4K switch for every device. “Highest” means the best quality available for that title and playback context; it is not a guarantee of a particular resolution.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The service uses adaptive bitrate behavior. If the connection becomes congested, the player can temporarily lower quality even after Highest has been selected. Let a few seconds of playback pass after a quality change, because an adaptive player may need time to build a stable buffer.

Crunchyroll’s commonly cited quality troubleshooter is written for browsers, not specifically for the PS5 app. Its advice to stay near the wireless access point, try Ethernet, limit competing traffic and restart the router is still useful as general connectivity troubleshooting, but it should not be treated as proof of a PS5-specific app setting.
Netflix
Netflix’s PS5 app supports up to 4K Ultra HD for compatible content. To reach that level, Netflix requires a compatible title, an Ultra HD plan, a 4K-capable TV, an HDMI path that supports HDCP 2.2 or later, and a sufficiently stable connection. The title must be marked for the quality you want; a 4K television does not make every anime title a 4K title.
For HDR playback, Netflix lists a compatible HDR television, the appropriate plan, the playback setting at High and a stable 15 Mbps connection on its PlayStation requirements page. Check the app’s playback-quality setting if the account offers one, and verify that the selected profile and plan are eligible.
Step 4: Test connection stability, not just advertised speed
A fast internet package can still produce a soft or fluctuating stream if the PS5 experiences packet loss, interference or short congestion bursts. Streaming quality responds to the connection available at that moment, not merely the headline speed on your bill.
- Try Ethernet if practical. Connect the PS5 directly to the router with a suitable cable and replay the same scene. This is a diagnostic comparison. If Wi-Fi was already stable, Ethernet may produce no visible change.
- Improve Wi-Fi conditions. Move the router or access point closer, avoid enclosing it in a cabinet and reduce walls or appliances between it and the console.
- Pause competing traffic. Stop large downloads, cloud backups, game updates and high-bitrate video calls while testing.
- Restart the router. Power it down, wait for it to finish shutting down, then restart it and allow the connection to settle before testing again.
- Repeat the same comparison. Use the same episode, scene and app setting on Wi-Fi and Ethernet. A one-time improvement during a busy evening does not prove that the cable increased resolution.
A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is a reasonable optional purchase only when you need to test or establish a wired link and do not already have a suitable cable. It is a stability tool, not a picture-quality upgrade by itself.
Interpreting the result
- If Ethernet stops visible quality drops, Wi-Fi reliability or local interference is the likely issue.
- If both connections behave the same, investigate the title’s available quality, account plan, app setting and display path.
- If quality falls only at certain times, household congestion or service-side demand may be involved; compare at a quieter time before changing hardware.
Netflix speed figures and why they differ
Netflix publishes more than one set of figures, and they should not be merged into a universal PS5 requirement. Its PlayStation-specific help page lists 25 Mbps for titles marked Ultra HD and 15 Mbps for HDR. A separate general Netflix speed table recommends stable speeds of 3 Mbps for 720p HD, 5 Mbps for 1080p FHD and 15 Mbps for 4K UHD.

| Netflix figure | Where it applies | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 25 Mbps | PlayStation-specific condition for Ultra HD-marked titles | Treat it as Netflix’s stated PlayStation threshold for that use case, not a guarantee of 4K on every title. |
| 15 Mbps | PlayStation-specific HDR condition | Use it as a stable-connection target for Netflix HDR, alongside the TV, plan and playback requirements. |
| 3 Mbps | General recommendation for 720p HD | A guideline for stable service performance, not a promise that every episode will hold that quality. |
| 5 Mbps | General recommendation for 1080p FHD | A general Netflix recommendation, separate from the PlayStation-specific page. |
| 15 Mbps | General recommendation for 4K UHD | Another general guideline; Netflix’s PlayStation page uses 25 Mbps for Ultra HD-marked titles. |
These numbers describe recommended or listed stable speeds under Netflix’s conditions. They are not measurements of your PS5’s actual throughput and do not override plan, title, TV or HDCP requirements.
Check the TV and HDMI path
A console can report the best signal available to it while the final picture still looks wrong because of the television or connection path.
- Use a 4K-capable HDMI input on the TV. Some sets reserve their highest bandwidth for one or two labeled ports.
- If you use an AV receiver, soundbar or HDMI switch, bypass it temporarily and connect the PS5 directly to the TV. This isolates handshake and bandwidth problems.
- For Netflix Ultra HD, confirm that the relevant HDMI port supports HDCP 2.2 or later. Netflix specifies this requirement for the connected display path.
- On the TV, select the input’s enhanced, deep-color or equivalent high-bandwidth mode if the manufacturer requires it for 4K HDR.
- Disable television “soap opera” or motion-interpolation modes when evaluating anime detail. They can alter line movement and introduce artifacts, making a source look different without increasing resolution.
- Use the TV’s normal HDR picture mode for HDR content and avoid judging a paused SDR frame while the television is still switching modes.
Replacing a functioning HDMI cable is not a guaranteed improvement. Cable replacement becomes useful when the existing cable cannot maintain the required signal, produces dropouts or prevents the PS5 from negotiating 4K HDR or HDCP correctly.
Why anime can still look blurry after the settings are correct
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The whole episode is consistently soft | The title may be offered only at a lower source resolution, or the original master may be intentionally soft or grainy. | Check the service’s title details and compare another episode or series at the same app setting. |
| It starts sharp, then becomes blocky or soft | Adaptive bitrate has reacted to an unstable or congested connection. | Pause competing traffic, improve Wi-Fi or test Ethernet. |
| Only HDR episodes look too dark or washed out | HDR calibration, TV tone mapping or forced conversion may be unsuitable. | Use On When Supported, run Adjust HDR and compare with the TV’s normal HDR mode. |
| Fine lines look worse only through a receiver or switch | The intermediary may be limiting bandwidth or mishandling the HDMI handshake. | Connect the PS5 directly to the TV and compare the reported output signal. |
| The PS5 reports 4K but the anime has no extra detail | Console output resolution is being confused with source resolution. | Verify the title’s maximum quality; 4K output can upscale an HD stream without adding original detail. |
Anime releases also differ in encoding, master quality, film grain and intentional softness. Compare like with like: the same episode, the same timestamp, the same display mode and the same service. Comparing a remastered release with an older encode can lead you to blame the PS5 for a difference that originates in the video source.

Recommended Free Tools
- Write down the TV model, HDMI input and whether an AV receiver or switch is in the path.
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and record Current Video Output Signal.
- Set Resolution to Automatic and verify whether 2160p is negotiated on a compatible 4K display.
- Set HDR to On When Supported and run Adjust HDR if HDR scenes look incorrect.
- In the streaming app, select its highest quality control. In Crunchyroll, that is Highest when offered; in Netflix, verify the playback setting and title badge.
- Pause downloads and video calls, then replay a known scene.
- Test a wired Ethernet connection if possible and compare it with Wi-Fi under the same conditions.
- For Netflix, verify the Ultra HD or HDR plan, title availability, TV capability and HDCP 2.2-or-later HDMI requirement.
- If the picture remains soft but stable, treat the source title or master as the leading explanation rather than repeatedly changing PS5 output modes.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Forcing 4K for every app: A manual 2160p setting cannot create 4K source detail and can introduce compatibility problems if the display path does not support it.
- Using Always On HDR as a universal fix: It converts SDR apps and may look worse on some televisions.
- Assuming Highest equals 4K: Adaptive services define Highest as the best available stream for that title and connection.
- Judging from one speed test: A speed test can be fast while Wi-Fi suffers brief interference or household congestion during playback.
- Blaming the HDMI cable first: Check the TV input, intermediary devices and HDCP capability before buying a replacement.
- Expecting game features to improve streaming: PlayStation’s PSSR description applies to certain compatible games; it is not established as an enhancer for streaming apps.
What a good PS5 anime setup looks like
For mixed anime libraries, the practical baseline is a 4K-capable TV connected through a compatible HDMI path, PS5 Resolution on Automatic, HDR set to On When Supported, the app’s highest quality option selected, and a stable connection with minimal competing traffic. Ethernet is useful when it solves a real Wi-Fi stability problem. Netflix viewers additionally need the qualifying plan, title badge, display and HDCP requirements; Crunchyroll viewers should expect adaptive quality rather than a guaranteed numeric resolution.

If those conditions are met and an episode still looks soft, the remaining limit is probably the title’s source, encode or artistic presentation. The PS5 is then delivering the available stream correctly, even though the result is not native 4K.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will setting the PS5 to 2160p make a 1080p anime stream sharper?
No. It can send a 4K-format signal to the television, but it cannot restore detail that was not present in the 1080p source.
Should HDR be set to Always On for anime?
Use On When Supported as the mixed-content baseline. Always On converts SDR apps to HDR and may look better or worse depending on the television; it is not a guaranteed improvement.

Does an Ethernet cable guarantee better streaming picture quality?
No. Ethernet is a useful comparison when Wi-Fi is unstable. If Wi-Fi is already reliable, changing to wired networking may not change the image.
Why does one anime look sharper than another on the same PS5?
Titles can use different masters, encodes, source resolutions, grain and artistic softness. Check each service’s title quality information before treating the difference as a console problem.
