How to Improve and Edit Sound in iPhone Videos

Choose a sound mode, place the mic close, adjust supported Spatial Audio clips in Photos, and use iMovie for narration, effects, and music ducking.

To improve iPhone video sound, start by recording with the right microphone and sound mode, then adjust speech and ambience in Photos or finish the mix in iMovie. On iPhone 16 and later, Apple’s Spatial Audio capture works with Photos’ Audio Mix controls; older or unsupported setups may need a closer microphone or a separate editing workflow.

Choose the right sound mode before recording

On iPhone 16 or later, go to Settings > Camera > Record Sound and choose Spatial Audio, Stereo, or Mono. The best choice depends on the recording and how you expect to edit it.

  • Spatial Audio: Choose this for a more realistic sense of the scene, especially if you may want to rebalance speech and ambience later in Photos.
  • Stereo: Choose this for conventional left- and right-channel playback.
  • Mono: Choose this when you want the same audio content in both channels.

Apple says Spatial Audio and Stereo recordings receive automatic wind-noise reduction unless it is turned off. That can help with wind, but it is not a guarantee that wind or other background noise will disappear. These recording choices and the later Audio Mix workflow are tied to supported models and formats; do not assume they are available on older iPhones. See Apple’s iPhone camera recording guidance for current device and setting details.

Get the microphone close to the speaker

Distance is one of the most practical things you can control: place the microphone close to the person speaking, and make a short test recording before an important shoot. A supported AirPods or AirPods Pro model can serve as the microphone in supported camera apps, but compatibility depends on both the AirPods model and the app. Check Apple’s current AirPods and iPhone video recording guidance, then test the exact setup you plan to use. A wireless microphone is an option, not a promise of noise-free sound.

Adjust speech and ambience in Photos

For supported Spatial Audio recordings, open the video in Photos and use Audio Mix to adjust the balance between foreground speech and background ambience. Apple describes the feature as isolating speech as foreground and ambience as background, with multiple creative rendering styles for adjusting the mix. This makes it useful when a clip has a voice and a surrounding scene you want to retain, rather than treating all sound as one undifferentiated track. Apple documents this workflow for iPhone 16 and later; it should not be generalized to footage from unsupported devices or formats. More detail is available in Apple’s Audio Mix documentation.

Use iMovie when the edit needs a timeline

Photos is suited to adjusting the mix of a supported Spatial Audio clip. For a fuller edit, iMovie on iPhone can edit audio clips, record voice clips, add sound effects, and lower background music under dialogue with audio ducking. A practical sequence is to place dialogue or narration first, add music or effects where needed, then use ducking so the voice remains audible. Apple’s guides cover editing audio in iMovie and recording and adjusting audio in iMovie.

When to use Final Cut Camera

If you want more control while recording, Apple’s free Final Cut Camera app offers capture tools including manual focus and white-balance controls. It is a capture option for creators who want to set more of the shot before editing, not a substitute for choosing a suitable microphone or checking the audio. Available features vary by iPhone and app version, so confirm current compatibility in Apple’s Final Cut Camera announcement and app information.

Pick a workflow that matches the problem

What you need Best starting point Important qualification
Capture a realistic scene and adjust voice versus ambience later Spatial Audio, then Audio Mix in Photos Supported iPhone 16-or-later recording and format required, per Apple Support and Developer documentation.
Record conventional left/right audio Stereo Apple says wind-noise reduction is automatic unless turned off.
Put identical content in both channels Mono Recording mode availability depends on the iPhone model.
Use a wireless microphone Supported AirPods or AirPods Pro with a supported camera app Model and app compatibility vary; test the setup in advance.
Add narration, effects, or music and balance them against dialogue iMovie on iPhone Audio editing and ducking are documented; preservation of every Photos Audio Mix control after import is not established.
Set capture controls manually Final Cut Camera Manual controls and compatibility depend on iPhone and app version.

A quick troubleshooting checklist

  • Voice sounds distant: Move the microphone closer and record a short test before continuing.
  • Wind is distracting: Check whether wind-noise reduction is enabled for Spatial Audio or Stereo capture; it can help but may not remove all wind.
  • Speech is hard to hear over the scene: If the clip is supported Spatial Audio, try Audio Mix in Photos. In a timeline edit, use iMovie’s ducking for background music under dialogue.
  • AirPods do not appear to record audio: Confirm the AirPods model and camera app are supported, then verify with a test clip.
  • Audio Mix is missing: Check that the iPhone, recording mode, and clip format support the feature; Apple’s documented workflow is not universal across older devices.
