How to Import Passwords Into the Passwords App on a Mac

Export a CSV from your current password manager, import it through Passwords on Mac, review any failed entries, and delete the unencrypted export.

To import passwords into Apple’s Passwords app on a Mac, first export them from your current password manager as a CSV file. In Passwords, choose File > Import Passwords from File, select the CSV, and click Import. Review any items that fail to import, then delete the CSV: it contains unencrypted passwords.

Import a CSV into Passwords on your Mac

  1. In the password manager you’re leaving, export your passwords to a CSV file. The exact export steps depend on that app; use its own instructions.

  2. Open Passwords on your Mac.

  3. Choose File > Import Passwords from File.

  4. Select the CSV file and click Import.

  5. Review any passwords Passwords reports it could not import. Check important accounts in the app rather than assuming every record transferred.

  6. Delete the CSV when the import is complete. Apple’s import instructions tell you to delete the file to protect your websites and apps.

What happens to passwords already on your Mac?

Imported passwords do not replace passwords already in Passwords. Apple does not describe every duplicate case or promise that matching records will be merged, so review important entries after importing rather than assuming which version takes precedence. The app also lets you review items that could not be imported.

Protect the exported CSV

Apple warns that exported passwords are not encrypted and are visible to anyone with access to the file. The CSV is therefore a temporary plaintext copy of your credentials. Avoid leaving it somewhere other people can access, and delete it once the import is finished. Apple’s export guidance also describes the file as unencrypted.

What may not transfer

Apple’s Mac export guide excludes Wi-Fi passwords, passwords shared in a group unless you created that group, and access to Sign in with Apple accounts. These are Apple’s documented exclusions for its export process; they do not establish what any particular third-party manager includes in its own CSV. Apple does not list every CSV formatting requirement or explain all reasons an item might fail, so consult the source app’s export guidance and review the import results.

Use Passwords, not Safari’s separate import route

For importing a password-manager CSV into the Passwords app on a Mac, use File > Import Passwords from File. Safari also documents a CSV password import route into iCloud Keychain, but it is a separate browser workflow; Apple’s Safari guide directs Mac users to Passwords for password importing and exporting.

Does importing require iCloud syncing?

No. The CSV import is a Mac workflow and does not require iCloud syncing. If you want passwords to sync across devices, Apple says to use the same Apple Account and enable Passwords in iCloud settings. See Apple’s Passwords User Guide for app and sync information.
