But that is not the same as producing more electricity than the entire facility consumes: the answer depends on which energy inputs and outputs are counted.
What “more energy than it consumes” means
In magnetic-confinement research, fusion gain, written Q, is the fusion power produced divided by the external power used to heat the plasma. ITER defines Q this way. At Q = 1, fusion power equals external plasma-heating power; above 1, fusion output exceeds that particular input. This is plasma breakeven, not a whole-facility energy surplus.

A facility also uses electricity for systems such as magnets, pumps, cooling, and heating equipment. A power plant would need to convert captured fusion heat into electricity and generate more electricity than all of its systems consume. ITER distinguishes plasma breakeven from engineering breakeven in its fusion FAQ and says it will not convert its heating power into electricity on its project page.
What lets fusion gain rise
Fusion gain improves when reactions release energy quickly enough, and the hot plasma holds onto that energy long enough, to outpace losses and the need for external heating. Three linked conditions matter:

- Notes: Glue is required (Not Included) during the assembly process. You will also need to provide your own 5V USB charging adapter, or you can power it by connecting to a power bank or computer.
- Temperature: hotter fuel nuclei move faster, increasing the chance they overcome their electrical repulsion and fuse.
- Density: more fuel nuclei in a given volume create more opportunities for collisions and fusion.
- Confinement time: the plasma must stay hot and contained long enough for sufficient reactions to occur before it cools or escapes.
These conditions are commonly discussed through the Lawson criterion. There is no single threshold number to apply across all fusion fuels and confinement approaches; a numeric value needs its fuel and system context. ITER’s physics glossary describes the need to hold fuel at temperature for a minimum time to produce more fusion energy than was invested in heating it.
How self-heating helps
In deuterium-tritium fusion, reactions produce helium nuclei (alpha particles) and neutrons. Alpha particles are charged, so they can be confined and transfer energy back into the plasma. That self-heating helps sustain the hot fuel and is central to a burning plasma. Most of the reaction’s energy is carried by neutrons, which are not confined by magnetic fields; they escape the plasma and deposit energy in surrounding structures. ITER describes this energy flow as part of the route toward capturing fusion heat.

Breakeven, ignition, and net electricity
| Term | What it means | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Fusion gain (Q) | Fusion power divided by external power supplied to heat the plasma, in ITER’s definition. | Whether the entire facility generates more electricity than it uses. |
| Plasma breakeven | Q = 1: fusion power equals external plasma-heating power. | A net-electricity surplus. |
| Ignition | In ITER’s glossary, the limiting case Q = infinity, where external heating is no longer needed to sustain the plasma. | Whether a complete plant’s electrical output exceeds all of its electrical demand. Terminology can vary by confinement context, so the boundary matters. |
| Engineering or net-electric breakeven | Electricity delivered by the plant exceeds the electricity consumed by the full system, after conversion losses and auxiliary loads. | It cannot be inferred from plasma gain alone. |
ITER’s glossary gives the concise convention: breakeven corresponds to Q = 1, while ignition corresponds to Q = infinity. These labels are meaningful only with their accounting boundary stated.

What the headline fusion results actually measure
ITER’s planned Q goal
ITER’s stated programmatic goal is Q ≥ 10: 500 MW of fusion thermal power from 50 MW of external plasma-heating power, according to its FAQ. That is a design goal, not a measured result or a claim of net electricity. ITER says it will not convert the heating power it produces into electricity.

The National Ignition Facility result
ITER’s FAQ reports that the U.S. National Ignition Facility’s late-2022 experiment delivered 2.05 MJ of laser energy to its target and produced 3.15 MJ of fusion energy. The ratio is about 1.5 at the target boundary: the fusion yield exceeded the laser energy delivered to the target. It does not show that the laser facility, which must supply energy to its laser system and other equipment, or a power plant used less electricity than it produced. The target-level result and magnetic-confinement Q are different accounting measures.

Capture heat and make electricity
A future plant would absorb neutron energy in a surrounding blanket, transfer the heat to a working fluid, and use a steam turbine or another conversion system to make electricity. ITER outlines this pathway in its machine information and fusion FAQ. Conversion losses mean that producing substantial fusion heat does not automatically yield an electrical surplus.

Supply and recover tritium
Deuterium-tritium fusion depends on tritium, a scarce fuel that a future reactor concept is expected to breed from lithium and recover for reuse. ITER identifies tritium self-sustainment as a concept it will test; its physics material explains the fuel-cycle challenge.
Keep materials working under reactor conditions
Structures facing the plasma and neutron flux must withstand intense heat and neutron bombardment over sustained operation. ITER notes that materials research must extend beyond its own program in its machine information.
Best Value
- As a display box for reactor generation, used with reactor generation.
- Material: acrylic, plexiglass
- Size: (L) X (W) X (H) 16.5X14.5X17cm
- Size: 8 x 8 x 6 cm.

Run reliably for useful periods
A useful power system must sustain or repeatedly deliver high-performance operation while handling fuel, removing heat, and maintaining components. ITER describes long-duration operation and reactor-like systems as significant engineering work on its project page. A favorable plasma Q by itself does not demonstrate that these requirements have been met.
