Apple Mail cannot directly import an Outlook for Mac .olm archive. Convert the archive to mbox, then in Mail choose File > Import Mailboxes > Files in mbox format. Apple Mail places the result in an Import mailbox, where you can verify and reorganize the messages.
This process migrates email. Contacts, calendars, tasks and notes stored in the OLM require separate exports and imports.
What an OLM file is—and why Mail cannot open it
An OLM file is Outlook for Mac’s archive format. Microsoft describes it as a container for email, contacts, calendar items, tasks and notes. It is different from a Windows Outlook .pst file.
Apple’s documented Mail importer accepts Apple Mail mailboxes and mailbox files in mbox format; it does not list OLM archives. See Apple’s Mail import instructions. The practical route is therefore:

OLM → mbox → Apple Mail
Before you start
- Make a duplicate of the OLM and keep the original unchanged.
- Copy the working copy to your Mac’s internal drive rather than converting from a network share or unreliable external disk.
- Allow room for the converted files and Mail’s local database.
- Confirm the extension is
.olm;.pst,.mboxand.emlare different formats. - Quit Outlook and Mail during conversion and import unless your converter specifically says otherwise.
Main method: convert OLM to mbox, then import
1. Choose an OLM converter
Use a Mac utility that exports a standard mbox mailbox or a folder containing mbox files. Evaluate it for macOS and Outlook-archive compatibility, large-file handling, folder-tree preservation, HTML and plain-text bodies, Unicode, duplicate handling, dates, recipients and attachments. For confidential mail, prefer local processing and read the product’s privacy terms.
For example, Olminator advertises OLM-to-mbox and EML export, with separate contact and calendar formats. OLM Converter · Viewer, Reader advertises MBOX and EML output, folder preservation and on-device processing. Those capabilities are vendor claims, not independent accuracy tests. App Store listings show “Free · In-App Purchases”; verify current limits and pricing before buying.
2. Convert a test folder first
Work from the duplicate OLM. Export one small folder to mbox and inspect several messages, including an attachment, an HTML message and non-English text. If the result is correct, convert the full archive. Prefer an output that retains Inbox, Sent, custom folders and nested folders, but do not assume every Outlook flag or category will survive.
3. Open Mail’s importer
- Launch Mail on your Mac.
- In the menu bar, choose File > Import Mailboxes.
- Select Files in mbox format, then click Continue.
- Browse to the converted mbox file or the folder containing the mbox files.
- Select the mailbox or folder you want to import and start the import.

4. Find and organize the result
Mail creates a mailbox named Import. It does not automatically merge the archive into your Inbox. Open Import, check the folders and messages, then drag them to existing or newly created mailboxes. Delete the temporary Import mailbox only after verification.
5. Verify before deleting anything
- Compare message counts for major folders.
- Open old and recent messages, Sent mail and very large messages.
- Test ordinary attachments, inline images and non-ASCII filenames.
- Check dates, time zones, HTML rendering, nested folders and unread status.
- Search for known senders and subjects after macOS indexing has had time to finish.
Using EML instead of mbox
Some converters create one .eml file per message. EML is useful for selective recovery, inspection or software that specifically supports it, but Apple’s documented bulk-import workflow specifies mbox rather than EML. Large archives also become unwieldy when they produce thousands of individual files.
Use EML as a fallback when mbox conversion fails or when you need only a small set of messages. Do not assume there is a universal File > Import EML command in your version of Mail. Microsoft documents EML handling in Outlook for Mac, but that does not establish a native bulk EML importer in Apple Mail: Outlook for Mac features.

- Choose Tools > Import.
- Select Outlook for Mac archive file (.olm) and click Continue.
- Select the archive and choose Import.
Imported items appear under On My Computer in Outlook. This can validate a questionable archive or expose contacts and calendar data before you export it separately, but it does not place mail in Apple Mail. Microsoft says legacy Outlook support for Exchange Online ends in October 2026; certain on-premises scenarios have a later date of October 9, 2029. What happens to contacts, calendars, notes and tasks?
Converting OLM email to mbox does not turn the other Outlook data types into Apple Mail messages. Plan separate exports:
- Contacts: export VCF/vCard or CSV, then import into Apple Contacts.
- Calendars: export ICS and import into Apple Calendar.
- Notes and tasks: use the converter’s supported export format or keep them in a compatible Outlook installation.
Some utilities advertise VCF, CSV, ICS, HTML and PDF output, but those are product-specific features rather than Apple Mail’s native OLM support.

Troubleshooting
Mail does not show OLM in the import list
That is expected. Apple’s importer is documented for Apple Mail mailboxes and mbox files. Convert the archive first.

The converter cannot open the archive
- Copy the OLM to the internal drive and confirm permissions.
- Check that the original is complete and opens in compatible legacy Outlook, if available.
- Try a small conversion rather than the entire archive.
- Preserve the original before testing another converter.
The Import mailbox is empty
Confirm that you selected Files in mbox format and pointed Mail at actual mbox files—not an OLM, EML files, a converter project folder or an unextracted archive. If necessary, import one known-good mbox file as a test.
Only some folders appeared
The converter may have exported selected folders only, omitted system folders or handled nested folders differently. Convert and import one folder at a time, recording message counts, before repeating the full migration.
Attachments are missing
Keep the OLM and converted files. Compare affected messages in Outlook, the converter preview and Mail. If attachments exist before import but not afterward, try a converter that explicitly supports attachment preservation or test EML output.
Messages are duplicated
Common causes are importing the same mbox twice, converting into a reused destination, importing both parent and child mailboxes, or syncing messages that already remain on the server. Use a fresh temporary mailbox for each test.

Search finds nothing
Wait for Mail and macOS indexing to finish, then verify that messages are visible in Import. Search problems limited to particular messages can indicate malformed or partially converted content.

If the complete mailbox still exists on IMAP, Exchange, Gmail, iCloud or another provider, adding that account may be preferable to restoring a local archive: choose Mail > Add Account. Apple documents the process at Add and manage email accounts in Mail. Server synchronization is not a substitute when the OLM contains local-only folders or messages no longer online.
Choosing a converter responsibly
- Produces mbox, not only PDF or HTML.
- Preserves folders and nested folders where possible.
- Handles attachments, inline images and large archives.
- Processes locally when privacy matters.
- Supports your OLM’s Outlook version and macOS release.
- Offers a preview or trial that reveals restrictions.
- States current pricing, support and refund terms clearly.
- Provides separate formats for contacts and calendars if required.
OLM Converter Pro’s migration instructions describe Apple-oriented exports, but its claims and pricing should be checked directly. No converter should be assumed to provide lossless preservation of every Outlook-specific field without testing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Apple Mail open an OLM file directly?
No. Apple Mail’s documented importer does not provide an OLM option; convert the archive to mbox first.
Do I need Outlook for Mac to convert OLM?
Not necessarily. Mac converters can advertise direct OLM reading, while legacy Outlook is useful for validation and recovery. New Outlook does not restore the legacy OLM import command.
Will importing OLM move my Outlook contacts and calendars into Apple Mail?
No. Email goes through mbox; contacts, calendars, notes and tasks need separate exports and destination apps.
The Bottom Line
For a bulk migration, use a converter that produces mbox, then import it with Mail > File > Import Mailboxes > Files in mbox format. Verify the new Import mailbox and keep the original OLM until messages, attachments and any separately migrated data are confirmed.
