Spotify usually skips because playback cannot load, the app is in Offline mode, a device or Bluetooth connection is interrupting it, a particular track is unavailable, or another session is controlling playback. Start by identifying the pattern, then restart Spotify, update the app and device, test another network or device, and clear the cache. Reinstall only after those checks—downloaded music and podcasts must be downloaded again after a reinstall.

Identify what “randomly skipping” means

The symptom determines the most useful test. Note whether Spotify:

  • Skips every song immediately or jumps through several tracks.
  • Skips only one or two songs.
  • Plays for less than a second, then advances.
  • Stops or fails to advance when a song ends.
  • Skips only with the screen locked, over cellular data, or through Bluetooth, a car, speaker, or Spotify Connect.
  • Plays a different item because another device controls the queue.

Use the table below before changing settings.

What you observe Most likely area to test
Every song fails on one device App cache, software version, storage, battery restrictions, firewall, SD card, or device problem
Every device and the web player fail Spotify service, account, catalog availability, or network-wide problem
Only certain songs fail Unavailable tracks, local files, changed playlists, incomplete downloads, or corrupted offline data
Only Bluetooth or car playback fails Pairing, accessory, vehicle infotainment, or Bluetooth stack
Only cellular playback fails Mobile-data restriction, VPN, carrier handoff, or weak/intermittent connection

Check whether Spotify is having an outage

Check Spotify Status on X and the Spotify Community Ongoing Issues board. An incident is more plausible when multiple devices, networks, and the web player fail at once, especially if the problem began suddenly for many users. Do not assume an outage from one failing phone; Spotify directs users to these channels when normal troubleshooting does not resolve playback.

Apply the low-risk fixes first

1. Fully restart Spotify

Close the app completely, not just to the home screen. On desktop, quit it from the menu or system tray and reopen it. If it is frozen, force-close it through the operating system. This does not remove downloads or account data.

  • CRYSTAL CLEAR CALLS: A built-in microphone provides you with hands-free calling. No need to even take your phone from your pocket.
  • MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.

2. Update Spotify and the operating system

Install Spotify’s current version from the official app store or desktop distribution channel, then install pending iOS, Android, Windows, or macOS updates and restart the device. Spotify’s official sequence begins with restarting and updating; a historical app version should not be treated as a universal fix.

3. Check Offline mode

On mobile or tablet, open Profile picture → Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline and turn Offline mode off. On desktop, open the Spotify menu from the Mac menu bar or the Windows three-dot/File menu and make sure Offline Mode is not selected. In Offline mode, anything that was not downloaded can be unavailable or grayed out. See Spotify’s Offline-mode guidance.

Run a controlled connection and device test

  1. Play the same song on Wi-Fi.
  2. Play it on cellular data.
  3. Try another Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot.
  4. Open another app or website to confirm that the connection works generally.
  5. Temporarily disable a VPN, restrictive firewall, DNS filter, ad blocker, or managed-network policy.
  6. Restart Wi-Fi and, if applicable, the router.

A connection can be fast yet unreliable: packet loss, cellular handoffs, captive portals, congested public Wi-Fi, or blocked Spotify traffic can interrupt playback. Spotify recommends changing networks, restarting the router, checking public-network restrictions, and checking firewall exceptions at its connection troubleshooting page.

Next, keep the account and song the same while changing the playback environment: try the web player, another phone or computer, and the device’s built-in speakers. Spotify says this reveals whether the fault follows the account or is specific to the original device.

Clear Spotify’s cache without deleting downloads

iPhone and Android

  1. Tap the profile picture.
  2. Open Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline.
  3. Under Storage, tap Clear beside Clear cache.

Desktop

  1. Click the profile picture and open Settings.
  2. Scroll to Storage.
  3. Select Clear cache.

Spotify explains the controls at Spotify storage information. Cache is temporary playback data; it is different from removing downloads or uninstalling the app. Clearing cache can remove stale or damaged temporary data, but it is not guaranteed to fix every cause. Avoid using an operating-system “clear data” command until you understand its effect on downloads and sign-in state.

Check storage, memory, and Android SD cards

Spotify recommends at least 1 GB of free storage for practical storage and download use. Its playback troubleshooting page separately mentions 250 MB of available memory as a device check; that is a troubleshooting threshold, not the recommended headroom. Free space before the device is nearly full, then retry playback.

On Android, a failing or improperly mounted SD card can affect downloads and device-specific playback. Check that the card is mounted and healthy. If downloads are stored there, test internal storage; back up important files and follow the manufacturer’s instructions before removing or changing the card. Spotify lists SD-card problems among possible device causes in its playback guidance.

Remove battery and background restrictions

On Android, open the system settings for Spotify and look for battery use, background activity, background data, Data Saver, adaptive battery, or “sleeping apps.” Where available, set Spotify to unrestricted or remove it from battery optimization. Menu names differ among Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, Xiaomi, OnePlus, and other manufacturers. A Spotify Community moderator identifies battery optimization and missing permissions as possible contributors, not universal causes: community troubleshooting.

On iPhone, check Low Power Mode, Spotify’s cellular-data permission, and whether the failure occurs only while the phone is locked. These checks are useful isolation steps, not proof that an iOS battery setting caused the skip.

Isolate Bluetooth, car, speaker, and Spotify Connect problems

  1. Play the song through the phone or computer’s built-in speaker.
  2. Try a different Bluetooth headset or speaker.
  3. Turn Bluetooth off and on, then forget and re-pair the accessory.
  4. Restart both the playback device and the receiver; disconnect unused Bluetooth devices.
  5. Try wired playback or Spotify Connect, then test another music app through the same accessory.

If Spotify works through built-in speakers but fails through one headset or car, focus on pairing, firmware, vehicle compatibility, or the Bluetooth connection. If every audio app fails through that accessory, the accessory or vehicle is more likely at fault. Community reports mention Bluetooth congestion and playback problems after a computer wakes from sleep; treat those as reported failure modes rather than Spotify-confirmed universal defects. See Spotify Community’s skipping FAQ.

Check account control and the queue

Open Spotify’s playback-device picker and look for an unfamiliar phone, computer, speaker, or car. Stop playback on unknown devices and sign out of all devices if necessary. Change the password if you see activity you do not recognize, then reconnect only the intended device. Another active session can make normal remote control look like random skipping.

Autoplay is not normally the explanation when Spotify skips through the current list before a song begins. It controls what plays after the selected queue or album ends; do not change it as the primary fix for loading failures. Spotify describes the setting at its internet and data usage page.

Use offline playback as a diagnostic

For Premium users, download a playlist over reliable Wi-Fi, confirm that its download icons show completion, enable Offline mode, and play it. Premium supports music downloads; Free accounts can download podcasts, with availability varying by region and current policy. An optional Spotify Premium plan can enable this test, but it is not a cure for skipping.

  • Offline works, streaming skips: investigate networks, VPNs, firewalls, mobile data, or quality settings.
  • Offline also skips: investigate the app, device, storage, Bluetooth, account, or corrupted downloads.

Downloads are not permanent archives. Spotify says users must go online at least once every 30 days to keep them, and downloads can also disappear after reinstalling, some app updates, exceeding the device limit, or SD-card problems. Details are in Spotify’s offline-listening guidance.

When only certain songs skip

Check whether the affected items are grayed out, unavailable in your market, local files, incompletely downloaded, or part of a playlist whose catalog has changed. Local files are not streamed from Spotify’s catalog, so check file format, file location, permissions, and synchronization instead of assuming a network fault. Spotify’s general playback page covers unavailable tracks and local-file troubleshooting: Spotify not playing.

Clean-reinstall Spotify only as a last resort

Use Spotify’s current clean-reinstall instructions when the tests above fail; community guidance recommends following them exactly because a normal uninstall may leave application data behind. Before starting:

When to contact Spotify or the device maker

Contact Spotify after testing another network, the web player, and another device; checking Offline mode, cache, storage, and account sessions; and checking current service notices. Include your platform, app version, operating-system version, affected tracks, network type, whether built-in speakers work, and the result of the four-way tests. Contact the accessory or vehicle manufacturer when every audio app fails through one headset, speaker, or infotainment system. A 2026 Community report about playback stopping after tracks ended was marked fixed for a particular iOS/app range; install the latest available version and check its current status rather than treating that dated incident as a permanent requirement: the issue report.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does clearing Spotify’s cache delete downloaded music?

Clearing cache removes temporary cached data and is different from removing downloads or uninstalling Spotify. Recheck the download status afterward; reinstalling definitely requires downloads again.

Why does Spotify skip only over Bluetooth?

Compare built-in speakers, another Bluetooth device, and another audio app. If the failure follows one accessory, re-pair it and check its firmware or vehicle integration; if Spotify fails on every output, investigate the app, account, and network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do only particular songs skip?

Those tracks may be unavailable in your market, local files, incompletely downloaded, corrupted offline items, or part of a changed playlist. They are not necessarily buffering problems.

Can Premium fix random skipping?

No. Premium enables music downloads, which can help determine whether streaming is the problem, but it does not guarantee a fix.

How do I know if Spotify is down?

Check Spotify Status on X and the Community Ongoing Issues board, then compare the app with the web player and another device. Do not infer an outage from one failing device.
