A Trello board that appears stuck can have several causes: an old browser or app view, an unsaved edit, delayed integration, failed automation, missing permissions, or a genuinely slow or unavailable service. Start by locating the stale information before changing settings.
- Open the card or list directly and confirm the edit was saved and appears in its activity.
- Reload or reopen the board, then close duplicate Trello tabs.
- Check the same board in a private window, another browser, another device, or another network.
- Compare the canonical Trello board with the external view (such as Jira, Google Calendar, Teams, or Slack).
- If the problem persists for everyone across devices, check Trello’s service and bug-reporting guidance.
First determine what “not updating” means
“Not updating” can describe different failures. A card may have moved on one device but not another; a new card may be hidden by a filter; a Jira list or Google Calendar may be behind the Trello board; an automation may not have run; or a notification may be missing even though the board is current.
Ask two questions: Where is the stale information? and Who can see it? If the main Trello board is current but another product is stale, troubleshoot that integration rather than repeatedly clearing Trello data.
Try these fixes in order
1. Confirm that the change was saved
- Open the card or list directly and check the title, description, label, due date, member, or position.
- Look for an activity entry recording the action.
- Ask the person who made the edit whether it is still visible to them.
- Make a harmless test change, save it, and reload before drawing conclusions.
Do not reload while text is still being edited unless you are willing to lose that unsaved text.

2. Reload and reopen the board
Use the browser’s normal reload control or reopen the board from Trello Home. Close duplicate or old tabs first so you are testing a newly loaded board URL.
3. Isolate the browser or app
- Open the board in a private/incognito window.
- If it works there, disable extensions one at a time, especially ad blockers, privacy or script blockers, password managers, and page-modifying tools.
- Try another supported browser or device.
- Restart and update the Trello desktop or mobile app if only the app is stale.
Atlassian’s access guidance covers browser sessions, blocked content, and connection problems: Can’t log in or access Trello.
4. Sign out and back in carefully
Use this step if you changed Atlassian accounts, were recently invited to a board, or your Workspace membership changed. Confirm first whether you normally sign in with Google, Microsoft, Apple, or an Atlassian password; otherwise you may return to a different account.
5. Test another connection
Try another Wi-Fi network, a mobile hotspot, or a device outside a corporate VPN. Firewalls, DNS filters, endpoint security, and blocked Trello CDN resources can leave a board partially rendered or unable to receive current data. Atlassian notes that inactivity can also break a connection to Trello servers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems6. Check account, board, and view
- Verify the board URL and Workspace; similarly named boards are easy to confuse.
- Confirm you are still a board member and have the required edit permission.
- Clear search, member, label, and due-date filters.
- Check archived cards, closed lists, and cards copied to another board.
- Use the full board rather than a filtered Cards search when checking whether an item exists.
A missing card is not proof that the update failed: it may have been archived, moved, copied, or hidden by a view filter.

Use the second client as a diagnostic
| Result | Most likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Web is current but the app is old | App state or local offline data | Restart or update the app, then sign in again; verify saved changes on the web before clearing app data or reinstalling. |
| App is current but one browser is old | Browser session, extension, or site data | Use a private window, another browser, and temporary extension disabling. |
| Both web and app are stale | Access, network, permissions, integration timing, or service issue | Check account membership, another network, integrations, and Trello’s issue guidance. |
When a slow board looks like a board that failed to update
Large boards can render so slowly that a saved change appears to have been ignored. Atlassian recommends fewer than 1,000 open cards per board, or fewer than 500 when many attachments or checklists are present. Open cards and their attachments load when the board opens.
To estimate the size, open the board filter and enter * in the keyword field; Atlassian says this displays all cards and the total count.
Reduce the active board’s load
- Archive old cards and unused lists.
- Move historical work to a separate board.
- Reduce unnecessary attachments and checklist-heavy structures.
- Avoid opening several very large boards at once.
Archiving improves the active board but makes history less immediately visible. Splitting boards improves focus and performance while adding navigation and reporting overhead. See Atlassian’s slow-board troubleshooting.

If a Jira list inside Trello is stale
Trello’s Jira-list integration is not real-time. The list updates when the board loads or refreshes, and the list header shows when it last synchronized.
- Select the Jira list’s sync control.
- Reopen the Trello board.
- Refresh the browser page.
- Check the last-sync indicator at the top of the list.
The feature also depends on the required Jira access and the eligibility of the Trello Workspace. Details are in View work from Jira in a Trello list. If the main Trello card is current, do not treat a delayed Jira list as a Trello-board failure.

If Google Calendar is behind Trello
For Trello’s calendar-link synchronization method, changes may take up to 24 hours to appear in Google Calendar. This timing applies to that calendar-link method, not automatically to every calendar or third-party integration.
- Confirm the due date is saved on the Trello card.
- Confirm the calendar URL remains enabled.
- Allow the documented delay before diagnosing a service failure.
- If the calendar URL is disabled, future Trello changes stop syncing, although existing Google Calendar events remain.
See Using Trello with Google Calendar.
If Teams, Slack, or another integration is stale
Map the data path: Trello board → integration or Power-Up → external product. Check each layer independently. Review the external product’s refresh interval, subscription, webhook history, authorization, and error or rate-limit logs.

For Microsoft Teams, visible boards may not be selectable until you join the board. Signing out of the Trello app or losing board access suspends configured channel notifications. Check board membership and reconnect the app before blaming the board. See The Trello app for Microsoft Teams.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If automation did not update a card or list
Automation can be disabled, triggered by the wrong event, aimed at another list or board, blocked by permissions, delayed by a schedule, or undone by another rule. A copied card also remains a separate record rather than a continuously identical one.
- Open the board’s Automation area from the board menu or lightning icon.
- Find the rule, scheduled automation, due-date automation, card button, or board button involved.
- Confirm it is enabled.
- Verify the trigger, source, destination list or board, and account permissions.
- Open the automation log and look for a trigger or error.
- Test the rule with a disposable card.
- Check whether another rule immediately changes the result.
Current Trello automation allows a custom automation to trigger up to 20 actions. Due-date automation runs at midnight according to the device timezone unless a specific time is set, so a date-based action may not occur when expected. Controls and logs are described in Create and manage automations.

Watch for synchronization loops
One-way card synchronization can update a destination from a source event. Two-way automation can make rules repeatedly undo or trigger one another. Atlassian recommends Card Mirroring, where available in eligible paid Workspaces, rather than improvised two-way automation. See Synchronizing cards.

A notification is an alert, not proof that the board saved or failed to save a change. Trello does not notify users about actions they take themselves, including actions performed by their own automation.
- Confirm you are watching the relevant card, list, or board.
- Check Trello email preferences.
- Check browser and operating-system notification permissions.
- Confirm whether another person’s action appears in the board even if no alert arrived.
Notification behavior is separate from board persistence; consult Receiving Trello notifications.
When to stop local troubleshooting and report a bug
Escalate when the same reproducible failure affects multiple users, browsers, devices, or networks after you have verified the canonical board and saved activity. Check known issues first, then provide reproducible steps through Atlassian’s Trello bug-reporting guidance.
Include these details
- Exact steps and the expected versus actual result.
- Browser and version, operating system, and whether you used Trello web, desktop, iOS, or Android.
- Whether other users are affected.
- Whether it reproduces in another browser, device, or network.
- Approximate time and time zone.
- A screenshot or recording that does not expose confidential board data.
- The board URL when appropriate, with sensitive information removed.
