The first helps Gemini remember useful context; the second brings archived conversations into Gemini so you can find and continue them there. Neither option syncs accounts or transfers every feature from the other service.
Choose what you want to bring into Gemini

Use memory import if you want Gemini to know things such as your writing preferences or recurring context without transferring an entire archive. Choose chat import if you want to bring specific past conversations with you.

Before you start: check eligibility and availability
Google’s Gemini Apps Help page says imports require a personal Google Account, access to the saved chats or memory in the source platform, and an account holder aged 18 or older. Work, school, and supervised Google Accounts are not eligible. Google lists the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK as unavailable regions. The feature is also unavailable in Gemini in Google Messages, Gemini in Chrome, and Gemini on Android XR.

Import memory and preferences
- In Gemini, open Import memory to Gemini. Copy the prompt Gemini provides.
- Paste that prompt into ChatGPT, Claude, or another supported AI platform and ask it to respond.
- Copy the response from the other platform.
- Return to Gemini, paste the response into the import flow, and select Add memory.
Google says Gemini creates a new thread and integrates the supplied content as remembered information. Review the response before importing: it is the selected context you are asking Gemini to retain, not a transfer of the source account or all of its capabilities.
Import a full ChatGPT or Claude chat archive
Export the archive from the source service
- ChatGPT: Google lists the route as Settings → Data controls → Export data. Follow ChatGPT’s export process to request and download your archive.
- Claude: Google lists Settings → Privacy → Export, where you select a date range. The download link is sent by email.
Export controls can change, so use the current labels in the source service if they differ from these documented paths. The archive you upload must be a ZIP file.

Upload the ZIP to Gemini
- In Gemini, open Import memory to Gemini.
- Under Import chats, choose Add.
- Select the ZIP archive you downloaded and submit it.
Google allows ZIP files up to 5 GB and up to five ZIP uploads per day. Processing can take up to a day, depending on the source platform. These are Google’s published product limits and processing guidance, not a guaranteed completion time.

Imported conversations appear in your chat list with an imported-chat icon and can be searched. Google says you can delete an individual imported chat or delete all conversations associated with an import entry.
If you upload the same ZIP again, Gemini adds new conversations and overwrites previously imported ones. If an import is interrupted, it may be partial; Google recommends deleting the import entry and trying again.

Google says imported and continued chats are saved in Gemini Activity and used to improve its services, including training generative AI models, as well as for safety and protection. Google says users can manage or delete activity. Before transferring private, medical, financial, work-confidential, or otherwise sensitive conversations, review Google’s current Gemini Apps Help information and privacy and activity controls.

Importing content does not make the original ChatGPT or Claude account part of Gemini, and the two services do not become synchronized. Treat imported chats as conversations brought into Gemini, not as a live mirror of the source account.
