How to Import Bookmarks, Passwords, and Settings Into a New Linux Browser

A Linux browser’s import wizard can move selected data from a detected profile. Learn how to handle bookmarks, passwords, and settings without assuming everything transfers.

Start with the import wizard in the browser you want to use. It may bring over selected data from a detected browser profile, but there is no universal “everything” package: bookmarks, passwords, history, autofill, extensions, and preferences are handled differently. If automatic detection fails, bookmark HTML is a useful fallback; passwords require a separate, browser-pair-specific process.

What can you import?

The destination browser controls which sources and data categories it offers. Its wizard may list a particular browser and profile, then let you choose from available items. For Firefox, Mozilla documents possible transfers including bookmarks, saved passwords, browsing history, form autofill, and some Chrome extensions when similar Firefox versions exist. Brave’s import options depend on the detected browser and can differ by data category.

“Settings” does not mean every detail of an old profile. Do not assume that extensions, open sessions, cookies, or every preference will move. Check the actual categories in the wizard and consult the destination browser’s current help for anything not listed. Menu names and available sources can vary with browser version and installation; the official instructions do not provide a complete matrix for Linux distributions or Flatpak, Snap, and native packages.

Try the destination browser’s import wizard first

Firefox

  1. Open Firefox Settings and choose Import Data in the browser-data import section. Mozilla also documents the route Bookmarks Library → Import and Backup → Import Data from Another Browser.
  2. Select a listed source browser and the profile you want to use.
  3. Choose only the data categories you want to transfer, then follow the prompts. A system-password prompt may appear.

Available categories depend on the source and setup. See Mozilla’s Import data from another browser instructions for current options.

Brave

  1. Open Brave and choose Bookmarks → Import Bookmarks and Settings.
  2. Select a detected browser, then select the data categories the dialog offers and continue.

For a Firefox source, choose Mozilla Firefox and the correct profile. Brave’s instructions require the Firefox profile to remain installed and intact for direct import; see Switch to Brave from Firefox. Brave’s general instructions are in How do I import or export browsing data?

If the old browser is not listed, use HTML for bookmarks

Bookmark HTML is a practical cross-browser fallback when the destination wizard cannot detect the old browser. It transfers bookmarks, not passwords or a complete browser profile.

  1. In the old browser, use its bookmark manager or library to export bookmarks as an HTML file. Chrome documents this from Bookmark Manager; Firefox documents HTML import when a source browser is not listed.
  2. In the new browser, use its bookmark import option and choose the saved HTML file. Follow that browser’s menu labels, which may differ by version.
  3. Inspect the imported folders before trying again. Imported bookmarks may land in a new folder or a different bookmark area. Chrome says they can appear on the bookmarks bar if it is empty, or under Other bookmarks when existing bookmarks are present.

See Chrome’s bookmark import and export instructions and Mozilla’s browser import guide for their documented steps.

Move passwords separately

Do not expect a bookmark HTML file to carry saved passwords. Password migration depends on the specific source and destination browsers, and a method documented for one pair may not work for another.

  • Firefox and Chrome: Mozilla documents importing Chrome passwords through a CSV-based path in its migration guidance. The page notes that automatic Chrome password import is no longer available on Windows; the interface change is rolling out from Firefox 139 for English UI and Firefox 140 for all locales. That is a Windows-specific caveat, not a stated Linux limitation. Consult the current Mozilla instructions for the applicable path.
  • Chrome and Brave: Brave says its standard browser-data import method cannot import Chrome passwords because of Chrome’s password encryption approach. Its documented alternative is to export passwords from Chrome and import them into Brave manually; see Brave’s instructions.

A password export file contains credentials. Keep it in a protected location during the transfer and delete it securely after confirming the import succeeded.

Check the new profile before removing the old one

  • Open the destination browser’s import summary, if it provides one, and confirm the categories that were transferred.
  • Check bookmark folders and their contents so you can spot duplicates or an unexpected destination folder.
  • Try a few saved logins and confirm autofill behavior if you rely on it.
  • Keep the old browser profile until you have verified the information you need in the new browser.
